They pay between $0.006 to $0.0084 per stream to the holder of music rights. I wouldn't quit my day job.

Any artist that's stupid enough to get ripped off by big business has already been demoted to the rank of a puppet.

0.6 of a cent actually seems like a lot to me. If my song gets listened to only 10 times, I earn 6 cents.

IDK, that seems like it could add up pretty well if your churn out good music

Not $0.6 cents (6/10ths of a cent), $0.006 cents (6/1000ths of a cent).

Way earlier this year, someone asked Ice T about this on Twitter, like "How much do you make on Spotify?"

His answer: "0.007 cents per play. MFs figured out how to split a penny."

It's not exactly news that streaming services are a ripoff for artists. That why a lot of bands dont put their stuff out on spotify. Most go ahead and do it though for exposure

I guess I should ask the question:
How many views does it take to make, say, $100.

They wrote it wrong. But the math on how much they make would be right. I believe 10 plays of $0.006 would equal $0.06. Which would be 6.

Less than 17,000 times if they are getting the low amount of $0.006. But if they are making $0.0084, than a little less than 12,000. A lot of views/listens for only $100. But if you song is awesome, and you can get millions of hits, thats a lot of money, sort of... A million would get you about $6,000-8,400 for you doing nothing. And thats only one song and a million hits. Make like 5 songs with like a few million hits each, and thats not bad...

$0.006 is, again, 6/1000ths of a cent. 6/1000th multiplied by 100 isn't 6 cents, it's 6/10ths of a cent.

0.006 is 1/1000 of a cent. $0.006 is a different amount... the dollar sign changes the amount. For example, 6 is written like this: $0.06. So writing $0.006 is 60% of a cent.

So now the question is: Is it 0.006 of a cent or $0.006?

Wasn't there some meme where some guy thought that $ and cent sign meant the same thing? Because you're being that guy.

$0.006 is 6/10 of a cent. A cent is a hundredth of a dollar, or $0.01. You can tell it's not 6/1000 of a cent because you're using a fucking dollar sign, not a cent sign.

Now as for the actual value they get, I'm not sure, that could be wrong, but as written, it says 6/10 of a cent.

No, it's 6 thousandths of a dollar. The unit in that figure is dollars, not cents. 6 thousandths of a cent would be expressed as "0.006 cents." Note the absence of a dollar sign. Expressed in dollars, 6 thousandths of a cent would be $0.00006.

Well, except for everything that went into producing the song in the first place, to say nothing of how much goes into becoming popular enough to get a million streams of a song. There's a lot of setup that goes into being able to make that kind of money off of a song, even if the actual process of making that money is relatively passive.

Oh. I wasnt talking about profit. I was just talking about the amount from the song. Though, tbh, they might have made the money from the song back earlier. Like from sales and stuff...

$0.006 per play

.6 cents per play

100 plays = $6 paid to artists

Spotify subscription is $10 a month

166 plays = $10 paid to artists

Where is the rip-off? Spotify would clearly be bankrupt if this "rip-off" was true because they would be overpaying the artists. If the average song was 4 minutes long, they could only afford 10 hours of play time per month per user.

Ok, my math was wrong.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/26/how-spotify-apple-music-can-pay-musicians-more-commentary.html
These days, millions of listeners flock to streaming services to enjoy music that is either advertisement-supported or subscription based. Americans listened to an average of 32 hours per week in 2017, and that number is only rising.

32 hours a week is 1920 minutes a week

1920 minutes a week / 4 = 480 songs a week

4.34524 weeks a month * 480 songs = 2085 songs a month

$12.51 monthly payout from Spotify, apparently operating at a loss. (Monthly subscription is $10)

Spotify, for example, is still losing money, despite growing 40 percent a year.

Makes sense.

This point is the real culprit.
record labels that can take as much as 70 percent of the money royalties.

And celebrity artists are still making a shitload of money. Who cares.

Nerd corner. This topic was itching my OCD.
