The holidays are coming up and receipt checking at major stores will occur whether it's allowed or not...companies don't want to risk more stolen merchandise and cameras aren't enough to catch thieves.

So if you got stopped to see your receipt, what would you do?.

I don't know about elsewhere, but in any province in Canada the correct answer is keep walking. A local Walmart has been trying this lately.

It is against your constitutional rights as a Canadian to be searched by anyone, excluding a police officer that either has a warrant or has just arrested you for a crime. You can file a very serious lawsuit and easily win against any retailer that tries this.

I just keep walking.

They can ask to see my receipt with no problem and Ill show it to them.

But if then they want to escalate the situation by falsely accusing me of something... then they will be met with a lashing SO BAD... that they will be the first person ever to be hospitalized due to the icy chill of embarrassment running down their spine.

So far it hasnt happened... but I am anxiously awaiting it.

I accidentally pulled out a bag of weed I had forgotten was in my pocket when I was trying to find the receipt one time. I dont know if they noticed but I just casually shoved it back in my pocket like nothing happened

Given that I've shopped at costco regularly for decades, receipt checks aren't exactly new to me. Searching more invasively than looking over the receipt and glancing in the cart? That might be an issue. But I really don't care about the five seconds it takes to check the receipt.

I remember one guys said he gave them the receipt and kept walking. She kept trying to give it back, but he just left afterwards. And she stopped asking him for his. And doesnt even look at him or his wife when they go anymore...

We've had this policy at several stores because too many people do the whole 5-Fingered Discount around here. I just show them and get on with my day. Once I was kinda screwed when I lost my receipt and couldn't find it.

I show them it. It really makes no difference to me and I have worked in retail before so i know they are just doing their job.

Ya they do it at my walmart here in BC. I usually just let them see but if I'm in a hurry I tell them no I'm in a hurry, bye.

This is true in many US states as well, but doing that will probably guarantee that they will ban you from their stores.

While you arent required by law to show your receipt, they arent required to allow you back into their store.

I do it cause they're just doing their job, not like they're actually trying to bust people or being malicious. Like yesterday I was walking out and they just asked and quickly marked the receipt without even really looking at it.

Exactly. In high crime stores, it helps greatly with theft.
In other cases, there's usually codes on the receipt that help security. It lets them know that maybe they left a security tag on shoes, the top of a bottle, etc. If you beep, it can be because of a simple mistake. No one likes getting a bottle of Jack Daniel's home to learn they forgot the security tag on top.

Wow the only person here willing to commit a crime rather then show their receipt and risk being called a shoplifter. Id rather be able to prove myself innocent then commit a crime over a minor insult.
