I'm not sure why they are still closed. They can allocate seats apart to have social distancing and you can even wear masks as watching doesn't require much talking if any.

That would be a valid point but they could still show old movies.

This.

They've run screenings where we ended up being the only ones there, they can obviously afford to run lower capacity screenings as opposed to nothing at all.

Movies can easily just set up the seating so that people are at least 1/2 seats apart at a time. lots of wasted space but still an easy solution for social distancing reasons. i always liked going to movies on days where it was dead (like thrusday afternoons) so i'd like to have them open.

theaters need to re-open.

all the streaming options are fine and great, but millions of people have been cooped up at home, and really need to get back out and start enjoying life again

I mean, if you wipe down all the seats maybe, and have social distancing for people not living together etc, but that is kinda hard with the way most theaters are (you have to literally slide past people to get to your seat.

IF they could take out seats so there was a way to walk up to yours without getting in contact with other people, and they literally wiped everything down between showings, then yes.

Otherwise, I know some people enjoy the theater, but most of us can watch stuff just as easily at home, with more comfort, our own snacks etc, and for now, until we have a vaccine etc, it makes more sense (to me) to stay at home if watching a movie. Do it with friends etc, that you have contact with regularly anyway, but not in a place where 200+ strangers have been within a few hours.

Seriously though, when was the last time you saw a chock full movie theater even on opening weekends?

Maybe it's different in other areas but I have rarely seen one half full, and most often you can grab a seat even last minute in the front 2 rows.

So if they wanted to, they could remove half of the seats and still have as many people watch the movies, but meanwhile make it much safer for everyone. Also more comfortable lol.

They have upgraded the seats in many of them to be recliners with soft padding etc, so at least your not much less comfortable than home now. I know some people love going to the theater, but even with that, I generally wait to watch a movie at home anyway. That was before teh possibility of getting Convid because you go lol.

Even if a movie was as cheap to watch in the theater as it is at home 3 months later right now, I STILL would not go anytime soon, if ever, because it's not worth the risk, not worth the inability to easily pause the show, make your own food (or have food delivered) etc.

I am not dating mind you, but honestly I'd rather have a date at home with someone while comfy, then at a theater. Perhaps for kids or younger adults the theater is an option that isn't as intimate as watching at home etc, so I can still see the use there, but for most? No real advantage.

Now if they brought back drive in theaters, that would make sense. They just need to actually not require people to listen on the radio etc, and set up a good speaker system etc. That would be great for dates, safe, and the huge big screen outdoors would actually give value over watching at home (it would also be cheaper to maintain then a traditional theater so you could probably charge less for tickets as well.

So I say, bring back the drive ins, and get rid of the mall etc theaters mostly (still have a few for those who really like the experience etc.)

Im kind of the opposite. Id never pay that amount to watch a movie at home unless I was buying a copy. But that amount (With food and drinks included) wouldnt be much at a theater... Though, I could go to the free theater...

Of all the industries begging to re-open Movie theaters should be the last. Lots of people in a crapped space, for hours at a time. Nope nope nope.

"Well they can just do social distancing"

They could, but theaters were barely making ends meet when they were able to go at full capacity. That's why they charged 8 dollars for M&Ms.

Like many industries like people who had pre-existing conditions before Covid19 are more likely to die because of Covid19, Movie Theaters are one such industry, they were on their last leg before, and they will likely die out now.

Probably not. I mean, they were dying, but it doesnt mean its completely over. They could open earlier, and have more showings due to social distancing. They probably raise the food pricing, but thats understandable. And if theyre on their last leg, why waste it staying closed. Might as well open while they still can...

I'm pretty sure that had more to do with the cut they get screening movies, especially early on.

Who cares what AMC bitches about in this case? They're the last that should. They have their own TV network with a lot of good shows so they would be fine even if they had to shut down all their theaters.

This is what I don't understand about folk who are very vocal about wanting things to stay closed. They are free to not use said places but the economy needs these places to survive. Also the longer things stay closed the harder it will be for them to reopen. This means less jobs and more people out of work.
