Board 8 > Board 8 Ranks: The Marvel Cinematic Universe (PHASE 1)

First and foremost: a warning. There WILL be spoilers for all 23 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in this topic (along with perhaps other Marvel properties...I can't be sure.) Again, this is a spoiler warning for the ENTIRE Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just wanted to get that out of the way.

Also, that "PHASE ONE" in the topic title doesn't mean anything like me handling the ranking by phase or anything like that. Given the size of write-ups I've received and hopefully how much interest this project might generate, I'm just expecting to need at least two, if not more topics to finish the whole list.

For the past ten months (give or take), COVID-19 has completely stalled a lot in our society, including Marvel's lengthy timeline for the premiere of their many, many superhero movies and television shows. Why, by this very date, we would be expected to have seen Black Widow, Eternals, and we'd be dealing with ads for Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings. However, those three movies did not come out in the past year. Before COVID hit, Marvel had conveniently wrapped up their first three phases (the Infinity Saga) in a neat little bow, leaving 23 movies as a part of their cinematic universe. And for the past several months, we--the Gauntlet Crew, and for the first time in a long time, the rest of Board 8--have been rewatching the Infinity Saga from Iron Man all the way up to Spider-Man: Far From Home, with the intent of ranking said movies and determining Board 8's favorite Marvel movie of them all!

Overall, we had a great deal of interest and a grand total of thirty-two participants submitted lists, ranking all twenty-three movies, complete with write-ups from almost everyone. The results have been tallied, and after a whole lot of work from all involved, we have our list set in stone.

There are two ties on the list. In both cases, the tie was broken by removing each film's highest and lowest scores.

I'll try to post one entry a day, and I'll maintain an outlier list to see who is most (and least) in sync with the board's opinion as a whole. I hope everyone enjoyed the project so far, and continues to enjoy when they find out where their rankings fall in the grand scheme of things.

I apologize in advance for my writeups being almost entirely devoid of any intelligent commentary on film whatsoever, and for my opinions in general being probably bad.

I have to imagine the bottom 4 is composed of the first two Thors, Iron Man 2, and Hulk, and I guess I'll make the safe prediction that it's indeed Hulk at the very bottom because I personally know less people that like that one than Dark World.

Also, gotta say, there's a little more separation between the top 2 and everything else than I expected considering I figured there were 4 movies I could imagine winning.

The one I could see doing that most whilst still being number 23 would be Thor: The Dark World. I can see Incredible Hulk getting a top ten, but enough of a cushion in lists not to be at the very bottom; and I have trouble seeing Iron Man 2 making a top ten in any category (including Sam Rockwell performances). Thor: The Dark World has some legitimately strong scenes, and enough fans in Thor & Loki that I can see it high on a list.

I can see Incredible Hulk getting a top 10 - it has a lot more redeeming qualities if you are into it than the other two movies that firmly belong in the bottom 3. But if you don't like it it can very easily be last place

I think that #1 rank is pretty easy to guess, and I'm assuming Thor 2 is gonna be the lowest. Nobody gave the Hulk a top 10 spot.

The top 10 is nearly half the list. With 32 participants, I could see almost every movie scoring at least one top 10.

The bottom 4 rated ones on imdb are Incredible Hulk, Thor 2, Captain America 1, and Captain Marvel.

Seems logical it would be one of those.

time to be embarrassed, whee.

my writeups are probably a mess since I have a very ADHD way of trying to compose big walls of text, I usually have it open in another tab and end up adding a few words at a time before clicking back on another tab to browse some more, jumping around between working on different sentences or paragraphs. So I tend to worry about my train of thought coming across, that I forgot something or repeated words and phrases too much. Sometimes I have a tab open because I plan on posting something, but I feel too much time has passed or that my point isn't really strong enough and just... close the tab instead of posting it. >_>

anyway enough being self conscious.

I think that Captain Marvel and Guardians vol 2. seem like they would have the most mixed opinions about them overall (at least people who hate them seem to really hate them. I remember seeing a topic here about Guardians vol 2 where there were a couple people who loathed it.), but I don't think that they would be hated widely enough to land at the very bottom (or at least not before Hulk or Thor 2 or maybe Ultron).

I'm going to guess it's Ant Man and the Wasp, since rather than people hating it I figure it's a case of apathy where no one is enthusiastic enough about it to rank it higher than the middle so it would end up naturally gravitating more towards the bottom of the list. And the 4-5 movies most people hate would end up competing against one another for "worst" so say Thor 2 will probably end up more like 22nd or 21st place.

Like, whatever the last place movie is, it had an average ranking of 20.9. Ant-Man and the Wasp definitely does not have an average of 20.9

I could see it being Iron Man 2, but that would mean somebody put Iron Man 2 in their top 10.
