To keep mixing types around, today we're moving onto ground types! These 7 remain pure ground through both stages of evolution (this is why Drilbur isn't here). We have 3 gen 1s and a mix of the rest, who will win today?

There's too many I really like here for me to actually pick one. Sandshrew, Cubone, Phanpy, and Mudbray are all worthy choices.

Cubone > Sandshrew > Phanpy > Hippopotas > Silicobra > Diglett > Mudbray

I think every one of these Pokemon I like better when they evolve.

Hippopotas has a cool cry, and Silicobra is the most interesting of the represented ones in New Pokemon Snap. Other than that they're all "just let me evolve them".

Diglett is my favorite Pokemon, so easy vote today!

These are all solid enough (except Diglett), and ground is probably my favourite type. None stand out as amazing, though.

Gen I & II rule the roost here, and with the exception of Cubone I've also used all of them in games...Phanpy is sooooooo cute but I gotta give it to muh OG Sandshrew.

Normally I'm not big on gen 1 being the top dogs but in this case they are. Sort of a mediocre bunch in my opinion, brown and drab just like THE ENTIRE GROUND TYPING

Huh, I always thought of it as the counterpart to Ekans given their version exclusivity but Pika does make more sense with them being lil rodents next to each other in the dex. Poor shrew!

I'm also joining the gen1 brigade today for Sandshrew, I've always liked it. More than I like Sandslash!

sandshrew and ekans both evolve at 22. theyre definitely each others counterpart.

I don't like this group all that much even though I really like the overall pool of their evolved forms. Mudsdale, Hippowdon, Sandslash and Donphan are all great but their baby selves are just meh. I want to like Sandshrew but it's basically the patron saint of annoying Pokemon that just spam Sand Attack on you all day in every battle to waste your time. So I voted for Cubone.

this is a fact, i don't deny sandshrew's status as also being an ekans counterpart

but on the other hand, sandshrew and pikachu (at least previously) had the same stat totals for 5 gens straight (unlike ekans) on top of their shared classification and direct proximity in the dex

It's certainly possible they were originally designed as counterparts (this could've been when Clefairy was still planned as the series mascot), but the plans changed by the time they were actually implemented into the game.
