From a political and security front, the standard of ban as long as it's from China makes sense. If they sell, no issues.

From a position of social media, it's cancer so yes.

IIRC, when Trump tried and failed to ban it a few years ago Oracle had lined up to buy it before it all fell through. Not sure if they'd make a second run for it or if there'd be more competition than Kotick and Altman.

As for do I think it will be? Kinda hard to say - I'm leaning that ultimately it won't. Either the House fails to get 2/3s for it because they're rushing it through the fast lane or it dies in the Senate like so many other things. But there's definitely a chance it goes through.

it is legitimately an issue on such a level that I would support it if it was actually put to any sort of vote. I wouldnt like the representatives we have having a say about it though.

I hate TikTok, but this. So much this. You give the government power to ban social media sites, it won't stop with TikTok.

Comparing it to Facebook and Twitter makes no sense.

Banning it would be on par with banning YouTube, actually insane and an enormous loss of information and learning.

This is dumb though. There's way better educational apps that actually reinforce learning (videos can't do that) and don't have predatory engagement-based algorithms. It's certainly way more accessible than those apps though.

If it gets banned, we'll immediately get a TikTok clone ready to take its place. There may be some fragmentation of the userbase, but ultimately people will flock to a specific platform. Anyone who thinks this modality of social media would end with TikTok is very optimistic and/or deluded.

Well, the House passed its forced sell/ban. 352-65

Dems: 155-50 (1 present, 7 not voting)
GOP: 197-15 (7 not voting)

Senate has seemed a little less eager about this and concerned that the House's bill is unconstitutional so "we'll see" I guess.

so dems were far less supportive of it? but most of them still voted for it right?

Yeah, about a quarter of Dems voted against it (but the other 75% voted for it obv) but for the Republicans it was 93% for and 7% against.

I mean, I think it's because Republicans have been primed to be against anything they see connected to China for years now. Trump starting a trade war with them, then Trump calling COVID the "China virus" (which he's broken out again in recent days) to stoke racism/deflect blame from his grievous mishandling of it.

And so this bill presents them an opportunity to do something they can go on TV/to voters and say "I fought back against China." I'm honestly pretty skeptical of the security issue argument when they're coming down on just TikTok and not crafting legislation that would address the same behavior from all social media companies.

When they banned it from use by certain government employees - that I could at least get in terms of a national security perspective but this... not so much. Or rather, that that's the motive behind this bill.

I believe the motive for legislators in passing a bill that affects only TikTok is based in it, yes. Or, to be a bit more precise, to take advantage of such sentiment for political advantage.

I posted the numbers before, I know. It was about 75-76% of Dems, yes.

I think the security issue is valid but it's a problem inherent to how basically all social media collect personal data and put it up for sale. If we were talking about a bill that sought to seriously rein in and regulate data collection and how these algorithms are basically designed to induce misery, anger, and distress in people I would be 110% for it.

But that's not what this is. It's literally a "force TikTok to sell or be banned" bill. It doesn't address the underlying issues at all - hell if TikTok does sell it doesn't change what TikTok is doing. It's basically red scare shit and I mostly chalk it up to a combination of anti-China sentiment and craven political calculus by members of Congress who on average are so old they probably don't even know what TikTok is thinking "well this is an easy way for me to say I 'stood up to China' and/or 'defend myself if my opponent accuses me of being soft on China' than anything approaching a genuine security concern on their parts.
