I was a bit iffy on Hollow Knight and Tunic, but the influence on both titles is pretty obvious so it felt worth including.

I'd say Hollow Knight counts (inb4 actually it's a Bloodbornelike), but it does feel weird because 2D "soulslikes" are almost always also Metroidvanias.

Shoutouts to Jedi: Fallen Order though, perfect 7/10 game, very fun

Hollow Knight is a soulslike aesthetically. The gameplay isn't the same (it's profoundly better tbh) but it's impossible to deny the influence dark souls had on it. It belongs imo

If this was Best Character Customization Creator, Code Vein would win hands down. I spent roughly 2 hours creating my character in Code Vein, absolutely wild how involved it is. Too bad the game itself is mediocre.

Salt and Sanctuary is an actual 2D Soulslike game. Hollow Knight is a straight up Metroidvania with a straight up FromSoft plot and look. Like way more a FromSoft aesthetic in that regard than most of these Soulslikes.

Haven't played Lies of P yet but Nioh 2 has some of the best combat I've ever seen in a video game. Just such an absolutely insanely fun system and it's a bummer that Team Ninja has yet to match it again in all of this time and a solid handful of releases now.

there's a lot of metroidvanias that definitely actively feel like they take as much inspiration from souls (or else just other metroidvanias that that do) tbh, i feel like you could've easily fit a blasphemous game or grime here too, and arguably even ender lilies or dead cells. i'm even pretty sure if you did a steam tag search on both you'd get a pretty hefty chunk of all metroidvanias in the last decade, and i wouldn't actually disagree with them

anyway i guess this is a pretty difficult call for me since i don't tend to play many since i manage to get too motion sick for a lot of 3d games, which is kind of why i can say more about metroidvanias, and ac6 (which is more pick up and play because of its mission structure) is probably my favourite """soulslike""" overall. i wonder if rise of the ronin is good

I find that hard to believe considering how similar it is to Sekiro combat. Along with the posture bar. But I guess it's not impossible they developed a similar system on accident, that's a crazy coincidence if so. I'm more willing to believe they saw early footage of Sekiro and decided to copy it.

However yes it is splitting hairs, which is what we're doing with Hollow Knight too. Just wanted to point that out.

Yeah I agree. I can see the argument but Dark Souls doesn't really do movement upgrades and that's a pretty important part of the Metroidvania DNA. Not having a map is also fairly damning tbh

Concur with this. There's roughly three schools of Metroidvania and, amusingly enough, Dark Souls is closest to Hollow Knight's more than the other two (the other two being of course Metroid and Castlevania). Even then though, HK's Castlevania and Megaman Zero DNA is almost as pronounced in its gameplay as the Dark Souls influence is in its aesthetics, so it's not that similar.

officially as per like 2005 wikipedia entry conventions, metroidvanias are explicitly 2d platformers to differentiate it from zelda and 3d stuff (and castleroids/castloids are explicitly the term for igarashi's games circa sotn though i guess that term died a fiery death the moment igavania got coined instead)
