Beyond the fact that DeFacist is a total scumbag POS, what do you think about not allowing children under 14 to have social media accounts?

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/florida-ron-desantis-signs-bill-social-media-kids-ban-rcna144950

Short version:
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Monday that will prohibit children younger than 14 from joining social media in the state. Those who are 14 or 15 will need a parents consent before they join a platform.
The bill, HB3, also directs social media companies to delete the existing accounts of those who are under 14. Companies that fail to do so could be sued on behalf of the child who creates an account on the platform. The minor could be awarded up to $10,000 in damages, according to the bill. Companies found to be in violation of the law would also be liable for up to $50,000 per violation, as well as attorneys fees and court costs.

So much for parents rights. Big brother DeSantis doesn't care what parents think.

How exactly are these sites supposed to police this? Not being funny but I was over 18 for years back when I was young. I'm not comfortable giving social media sites any form of my ID with all the breaches they've had over the years.

On top of that, pretty fascist to place so many limits on people. Isn't that the opposite of freedom?

EDIT: Companies that fail to do so could be sued on behalf of the child who creates an account on the platform. The minor could be awarded up to $10,000 in damages, according to the bill. Companies found to be in violation of the law would also be liable for up to $50,000 per violation, as well as attorneys fees and court costs.
So if hypothetically my children were to make accounts on all the social media sites, I could sue them for $10k each? Sounds like I need to get in on this...

This should be the parents decision but I feel a lot of lazy parents just want everyone else to watch over their children now

So can a kid just lie about their age and just rake in the money on those violations?

Don't most (all?) already have a 13+ policy anyways? Even this place has had that since the 90's.

COPPA basically says you can't collect info on kids. Most sites collect info. Therefore, kids can't have accounts. As far as I can tell this bill is utterly meaningless unless he creates new enforceability standards. As is, COPPA compliance forces websites to not allow accounts to people 12 and below. So maybe DeSantis just wanted to expand the limit by 2 years for some reason.

This is superfluous, stupid, and unenforceable. Is he aware that these TOS say 13 and over can have accounts? So why this law? This bill is stupid and does nothing.

I thought parents were the ones who were supposed to make decisions for their kids, or is that only when they might face the danger of learning that gay people exist?

what do you think about not allowing children under 14 to have social media accounts?

I think regardless of my opinion on whether or not it's appropriate for someone that young to be exposed to social media... they have the right to free association and speech.

Granted that gets into discussions on what isn't a public square and whether or not something that requires a membership/account can be restricted like this, in the same way the state can't restrict who, say, the boy scouts allow and ban (as awful as that example organization is)...

But I don't think it's constitutional for a state (maybe even a federal, but there's probably a stronger argument there) to ban someone from having a social media account?

Well, I doubt the bill will ultimately stand, it's just more performative bullshit from another clown who doesn't actually know how to govern.
