And I'm really not one to cry sexism.

I was on the lat pull down cable machine and I was standing between sets during my rest. This old guy comes and asks me if I'm working even though there is an open one at the end and two others being used by men. I said yes. He went to wait. Okay fine.

So I do another set and rest. I'm updating my workout log and making a Facebook comment in my rest and he comes up to me.. Again even though there's an open one at the end.. And says "are you gonna work or play on your phone?" with a wicked attitude. I looked at him and said "I'm on a rest between sets so don't even talk to me that way." He starts saying "if you're not gonna work.." and I cut him off and said "look dude there's an open one down there so don't fucking talk to me that way when I'm resting between sets." and I looked away. He still went to wait for me to be done with the open one at the end! They're all the fucking same!

He could've at least asked to work in. Not sure why he wouldn't want to use the other machine. Maybe he thought he was flirting or something

I don't know if that was sexist so much as poor gym etiqutte or a weird attempt to try talking to you.

If the other people were acting exactly the same as you (phone during rest), and he was only annoying you about it then you defintiely have more grounds to think that way.

Then again, i mostly work out at my team facilities so the usual gym interactions are a little lost on me.

As 123pizza2 suggested, if others were doing the same and this person is picking on Jen specifically then something might be off. Jen mentioned one other machine was free and another two were being used by two men. Whether or not those two men were on their phones occasionally is beyond me.

If i'm on a machine and someone else wants to use it, I ask if he or she wants to use it in between my sets since I'm not using it then anyway.
But then again, I have a sense of etiquette.

Not sure why he refused to use the open one, but apparently he really didn't want to.

We don't know the whole situation; you may have been taking too long, and the other machine may not have been working or something.

he could have been polite to me but he wasn't. he could have asked to work in but he didn't.

when he got on the machine after i was done he did ONE set of FIVE reps and was done. why was that worth giving me shit over? it wasn't.

Obviously I've had plenty of instances where I acted more rude than I needed to, but sometimes it's just the heat of the moment. i always try to accommodate people in the gym when they ask. literally all you need to say is "hey can i work in?" yeah sure bro, go ahead. then we work together.

this guy didn't want to be polite and he didn't want to use proper gym etiquette and all he did was harass me. so no, i don't feel the need to be the bigger person.

my boyfriend was like maybe he wanted that one because it has two pulleys instead of one. i was like i don't think so because he did the same exact exercise i did (that didnt involve using two pulleys)

and if that were the case all you need to say is "Hey i want to do an exercise using the two pulleys. do you mind if i use this one and you can switch to the open one?" and i would have totally done that. he just wanted to be an ass for who knows what reason.

Maybe he's just a dumbshit? How old was he? In my experience, old people are terrible with gym etiquette, but it's not usually malicious. They're just spacey. If it was a younger guy I could understand being mad but to me your descriptions don't make him sound like that much of a jerk. Maybe you just had to be there

Although personally, I always say something like "I'm still using it, but you're welcome to work in if you want." The only way I won't let people work in is if I'm using a barbell, for obvious reasons.

If someone is not actively using a machine I just get on it, he honestly should have done the same. I expect people to treat me the same way. Everyone pays to go to the gym, so everyone has equal share to the equipment. I don't get why people try and claim equipment for extended periods of time. Do your set, and if you wanna rest those muscles before doing another set go hit abs or jump on a bike for a minute and come back, and if it's being used at the moment there are plenty of other ways to hit the muscle group you're working. Why go to the gym to stand around? I don't really agree with the practice of standing next to a machine, sitting on it between sets, draping towels over it, or anything in an attempt to claim a machine. The only exception being for barbell exercises that take longer to setup and there's really no way for two people of different strengths to easily work in.

I mean, if I saw a machine with 2 people using it and a machine with 1 person using it (assuming he didn't see the open one or it was broken or somehow different), I'd always go up to the single person using the machine to ask how much longer they'd be using it. 2 people are always going to take longer than 1 person, and it's harder to work in with 3 people at once.

You come off a tad more aggressive than the situation seemed to have warranted, but I wasn't there, so maybe he really did deserve it. Either way, that dude seemed to have some problem with you, or just really wanted that machine you warmed up with your butt.

there was 4 machines. 3 were being used, two of them had one man a piece and one had me. it wasn't two men using one machine.
