Should the hacker serve time for breaking the law to solve worse crimes?

...for said hacks.

https://www.rt.com/usa/368207-steubenville-rape-anonymous-guilty/

A Kentucky man who, in 2012, hacked into an online account for followers of a Ohio high school's football team to expose a gang rape of a teenage girl has pleaded guilty to charges associated with the hack. He is facing a longer term than the rapists.

Earlier this week, Deric Lostutter, 29, known online as "KYAnonymous," pleaded guilty in federal court in Kentucky to one count of conspiracy and one count of making false statements to law enforcement agents for his hack of the Steubenville (Ohio) High School football fan website Roll Red Roll in December 2012.

Lostutter has said he hacked into the site to expose information about the gang rape of an unconscious teenage girl from West Virginia by members of the football team. Two of those team members, Trent Mays and Malik Richmond, were eventually sentenced to serve time — two years and one year, respectively — in a juvenile detention center for rape and kidnap.

The Roll Red Roll site was hacked with a video from "KYAnonymous" which showed evidence of the 2012 rape, including video taken and shared by the crime's perpetrators in which they joked about the assault. The hack also included threats to disclose details of the school faculty members and parents involved in covering up the rape if those who were responsible didn’t come forward and apologize.

In a plea agreement, Lostutter said he conspired with another hacker, Noah McHugh, to access the fan site in December 2012, four months after arrests were made in the case. The pair intended "to bring attention to the August 2012 rape, to harass and intimidate people, and to gain notoriety and publicity for their online identities," according to Lostutter's plea agreement, Reuters reported.

Lostutter faces a maximum of up to five years in prison for each charge. He will be sentenced in March, Reuters reported.

Steubenville (Ohio) High School football

Is this the whole Football Is King attitude I've heard so much about? Nothing about this sounds like justice.

How come you only get like a year in prison for rape or assault, but the second money or computers are involved you'll never see the sun again?.

Literally a two year sentence for kidnapping and rape. Kentucky needs to be pushed into the ocean along with Florida. Just cut out the land mass and plop it out into the ocean, hundred of miles away from everyone else. smh

Why does the law exist? Isn't it to protect the people and order first and foremost? Sounds to me like the hacker's action fulfills those criteria, unless laws have other purposes, then why even have the law?

I don't give a shit. If someone breaks the law to save someone else and expose a disgusting crime like this, then they should get a pass.

This shit should be dealt with on case by case basis. I hate the fact that Justice is blind, since cases like these enable rapists to get a lighter sentence than a person who exposed them.

I mean, what he did is a form of vigilantism, which us a tough thing for the law to encourage.

That said, it's hard to justify him getting a harsher sentence.

However someone in the courts needs to be charged. 1-2 years for kidnapping and rape?

Didnt the hacker just do the same thing the government does every day to the entire population? How cone the people doing that arent charged?

Really though, he was charged harshly to set an example for other hackers because the government has their own dirty secrets that they want to keep to themselves.

It's hard to justify because sane minded people can't justify it. The US has a real problem with protecting the futures of the accused and the guilty, which is ironic considering the absolute shit ragging they go through in public when they're accused, then get such a slap on the wrist when they're found guilty.

This hacker absolutely should not face more time than the rapists. Of course, whatever he's facing is very rarely going to be what he sentenced by. He did break the law, and hacking is a federal crime. If the judge is reasonable, and I hope he fucking is, the kid will just get a 2 year suspended sentence.

Well, I got the 2-year part right. The prosecutor is fucking disgusting.

Well I mean yeah he broke the law but clearly the cover up he exposed SHOULD have also resulted in convictions. And even if he ruined the possibility to get them charged as well the prosecutor/judge still could have made a statement saying that what the Steubenville people did was absolutely wrong and that rape is despicable. Seriously I played football in HS and **** anyone who thinks fielding a winning team is more important than a person's life.
