Because they will still get hundreds or depending on the job thousands of applicants and then they can lowball them all, and choose the ones that will accept the lowest amounts.

Because it's an employers market right now and has been for quite along time.

It's unfortunate that pay matters and that performing any function that contributes isn't viable for self-sufficiency. Most of the jobs currently available are in severe need of competent employees but many those fields are erroneously treated as unskilled.

It's almost like any job that benefits someone is a good job but we are missing that somehow.

I'd rather get paid just enough for fun living without being excessive than work without enjoying life to have so much but none of the time to enjoy any of it.

I agree to an extent, but I don't feel like I really need to know beforehand. The only reason I'd really care to know is so that I don't have to play their negotiation guessing game. Most of the time though I seem to be in the right ballpark cause I tend to aim pretty low (but "low" by the standards of the career I'm going for is still more than livable).

Clearly, a chosen existence. We are our builders, we create our society. Aren't we in charge of our fate and destiny?

But pay shouldn't be why we work. If you consider it truly, all jobs are important. We all need each other. There could be only 2 of us or 2 of all of us, the need for each other doesn't change.

I don't make my own shirts and I cook for many that don't cook for themselves.

Some make cars, some fix them. Farmers, builders, healers, workers, organizers, educators, etc., every single one has a place and a need, a value, no one more important than the other.

I have done many jobs, I have also commuted a long way for some jobs (at one point I was insane enough to commute from Hayward CA to San Jose CA, and due to traffic that could take 2 hours each way). I was young then.

Anyway, my point is simply that no matter how much I made, I was happiest doing jobs that I enjoyed or found rewarding. I tried to like all my jobs, but yeah, if you commute more then 30 minutes each way, that is already starting off with a negative (unless you love rush hour traffic then someone needs to clone your brain).

As far as being able to live comfortably, as long as you don't have kids, you can do that with almost any job, even part time. You might not have an expensive house, or even an apartment (you might have to have roomates, but given time you can find friends that you like living with, or a significant other to share the costs), but you can make enough to have a good/fun life and actually like what you do.

Not saying making more money isn't good, just saying that doing so at the expense of spending a large amount of your time doing a job you hate or at least don't like, isn't worth it.

If you have kids, then you are responsible for them and that changes (although I would still suggest that with effort and time you'll find a job you don't mind that pays enough to give them a good life).

Otherwise, take the job at gamestop if you love video games and work your way up to assistant manager or manager of a store over years if need be. Work at a job teaching people to mountain climb in San Fran if you love climbing, get a job teaching students music if that is where your heart is, or cook, even if they get almost no tips, cook somewhere that serves food you enjoy making and feel pride in serving.

There is always a way to find a job that you don't hate, that will pay your bills. Too many people get so wrapped up on making as much money as they can, that they end up spending much of their time miserable. I have seen it with a ton of new attorneys for instance, they spend so much time, effort and money working to be an attorney and then find out they hate it. Kinda hard to just throw your hands up and do something else, but quite a few do even so.

I don't want to do claims anymore. After all the treatment I've gotten I don't like the negative customer service aspect of it. Everyone I talk to on the phone is just a giant asshole all the time and it's the last thing that is making me unhappy. I'm trying to find something else even if I have to take a paycut but I do have a floor income I have to have in order to not default on my bills.
