Animals understand concepts like respect and power - which are obviously some things that humans innately understand as well. But to confuse that with love is a fool's errand.

My aunt's dog definitely is capable of love, she howls in excitement when my aunt and cousin get home from work, she growls and tries to bite people who try to take her away from either of them and she whines and howls when they leave for a couple of hours, if that isn't love I don't know what it is.

meanwhile when they're gone and she's done her sweep of the house to make sure they're gone she starts cozying up to me because it's just us, or sticks with me more compared to my brothers and my niece and nephew but I know she's just doing it because i'm like the third person she sees everyday where as she sees all of them sparingly.

dogs aren't only capable of love, they have a tier list of who they love the most.

Yes

It seems pretty clear that my dog enjoys being close to me. He often rests with his head in my lap, with a big sigh. When we go to bed, will wiggle and scooh, so he is pressed against me, followed by a few ginger licks, before he closes his eyes. What makes you say that dogs can't or don't show affection?

Absolutely. Humans are the only ones capable of conveying emotions verbally. It has been proven dogs receive Oxycontin when they see there owners. People are just arrogant enough to believe all emotions are exclusive to the highest intelligence because we can express fear, love, hate, jealousy and everything else in a way we understand. There was even a study to "prove" dogs experience jealousy. That should have gone in the "no shit" category for anyone that even remotely interacted with a dog.

Yes definitely. Not all animals will of course, depending on the animal and the person, but at least one will. People are animals and we're capable of a wide range of emotions. We certainly aren't the only ones capable of love and affection outside our species.

Yeah. Tbh, I think love is mainly just a human construct/concept that we use to describe a certain set of emotions or instinctual behaviours. Aside from generally practicing monogamy, there's not much difference between us and other animals. We're just more thoughtful and expressive about it.

I realize that the above is pretty much a huge "duh," but like.. I just mean that I don't think love is some grand, transcendental thing like people make it out to be. It's mainly a grouping of the above quoted qualities and some others, sometimes mixed with physical attraction. Dogs are most probably as capable of experiencing those feelings as we are.

Love doesn't have to have anything to do with romance or attraction. You can love family and friends.

Not love in the human concept of it, no.

Animals do feel loyalty to people/pack mentality/whatever you want to call it though and perhaps when you boil it down, love isn't really that dissimilar and we just have a different name for it.
