Dan Cummins did that. He said that guy did it. The attorney there said he cant say that because he hasnt seen any evidence. Dan cummins said he makes bad choices all the time. And he could make another one there... Basically...

I don't like jails and I don't think anyone should be imprisoned. It's true, although I wouldn't say it if I had a chance to be on a jury. I want to someday.

And unless the guy hurt kids or something, i'll probably work to get him free.

I can't possibly convict someone unless I have 100% evidence that proves it. But I also need to be able to rule out Evil Twins, Shapeshifters, and Dopplegangers. I have seen Oz and Orange is the New Black. I know what goes on and can't subject anyone to that kind of thing. People go to prison straight and end up gay? Not cool man. Not cool.

Also considering the 13th Amendment allows for convicts to be used as Slaves, I'm not a 100% sure the laws broken actually should warrant prison time or if it's just an elaborate ruse to get more slaves. How can you possibly expect me to participate in a system that can and does enslave people?

Works every time.

I mean I have never used it, but it's gotta right?

That sometimes works - both prosecuting and defense attorneys can dismiss potential jurors during the Voir Dire process.

That can backfire on you, though. Attorneys usually have an unlimited ability to dismiss for cause (ie, if a juror has conflict of interest), but only a limited number of dismissals without cause (ie, if they think you're going to be biased against them but they can't explicitly dismiss for cause). So if you, for instance, walk into the room and say that you're extremely pro-police and think all black people are criminals at heart, while the defense attorney of a black defendant is absolutely going to want you out of there, they may actually have no more objections without cause left to dismiss you. Whereas the prosecutor is really going to want you in there, so you'd be more likely than not to be chosen.

That being said...

Mr Hangman posted...
You don't have to say fucked up stuff to get out of jury duty, they'll reject you for saying perfectly sane things like,

"I would not vote to convict someone based solely on eye-witness testimony, which is infamously unreliable," or

"I would not convict someone who obviously committed a crime under an unjust law," or

"I don't believe in the death penalty."

You can also mention that you understand the concept of jury nullification, believe it applies, and fully intend to explain it to the other jurors and push to have it be the central focus of judgement.

Odds are they will boot your ass fast enough to make your head spin, because the legal system REALLY hates the idea of jury nullification, and go out of their way to prevent jurors from understand it because it complicates things for them immensely. They really, really don't want anyone who knows it's an option to explain it to the other jurors.

For the record, jury nullification is the right you have as a citizen and a juror to deliberately establish legal precedent based on your moral stance on the laws in question, and not on whether or not the defendant is actually guilty of the crime in question. So if you think someone is absolutely guilty, but you believe that the law itself is unjust, or the punishment is excessive to the crime, or that the court itself is prejudiced, you can vote not guilty even if you sincerely believe the defendant IS guilty.

Courts HATE this, and will actively discourage it - they'll usually tell you in the juror briefing that your obligation as juror is to judge the case solely on the merits of the evidence and issue a verdict based on whether or not you believe the defendant committed the crime, with no other bias. They may even imply you'll be punished if you do otherwise, but they can't technically do so.

Most people are unaware that this concept exists, and the courts like to keep it that way. So the last thing they want is for someone who IS aware coming it to explain it to the other jurors, thus spreading awareness of it.

Be warned, though, that some people DO use the concept solely to get out of jury duty, and courts know this, so if you claim to support it, they may question you to see if you really understand it, and may ask you to cite precedent, so if you're planning to use it as an excuse, you'd better be prepared to do a bit of research ahead of time.

I've been selected for jury duty 3 times but have never been seated. The easiest way I've found to be excused is to simple look uninterested. When they ask me the questions, I answer truthfully and then when they move on to the next person, I'll cross my arms, slink down in my seat, twist back and forth and do random stuff like stare at the ceiling. This has led to the defense attorney using one of his "no cause" excuses. Score!

Knowing where i live it wont last that long major crimes dont really happen here and what does usually seems pretty open shut cases from what ive seen. But Idk never done this before.

Almost wish i was on jury duty back when dude jumped out the window on the second story after being found guilty. Broke his legs lol. He actually lived in my neighborhood. He was always in court but had always managed to get away scott free. Blackmailing a senator may have helped.

No, there's no cut-off age.

The realistic answer is that you just haven't done anything in WA to get put on the jury duty call list yet.

I've mentioned before that there are about four different ways to get on the list in NJ (voter registration, getting a driver's license, something involving home ownership - I think it's when you get put on the property tax rolls when you first buy property... and a fourth I can't remember), though I'm not sure whether every state has the same system, or if different states have different standards.

One of the easiest ways to get OFF the juty duty list is to move - once you're no longer resident in your original property, you're no longer obligated to attend jury duty in that area. But it can take a while for your new area of residence to pick your name up and put you on their list.

Conversely, there's also a lot of luck involved - some people seem to get called constantly, while other people can go their entire life and never get called once, even if their name IS on the list.

I have got a notice for jury duty 3 times in the last 10 years. I swear they watch for the earliest time they can send me a notice and do it the first day they are able. Thankfully, I have never had to answer a question:

The first time I got a notice was for town court (which REALLY sucks because you don't get any time off of work for it unless you work a night shift since they usually start at 7PM). I actually had to go down to the court house because they don't have a "number", they just mail notices out to 50 people and pick jurors out of the pool. Thankfully both cases they were selecting for got settled while we were there, so it was just half an hour of my night wasted. The funny thing is the judge was trying to make everyone feel better by saying "well, at least you didn't have to go downtown for county court!" despite the fact I worked right across the street from the county court house, and it would have been WAY more convenient for me...

The second time was for county court, but my juror number was like 750, so I never got called in.

The third time was for district court, which is like one step below Grand Jury in the "This is just going to consume your life for a while so deal with it" spectrum. Basically they put you "on-call" for the next 6 months and can send you up to 5 notices for cases. They sent me like 2 notices, but I never had to go in for questioning on any of them because they all got settled before jury selection.

Come to think of it, that last one was a year and a half ago, so I am probably about due in a year or two...

They probably do. I heard they usually don't send to active duty military members. And I never got one the whole time I was in active duty. As soon as I got out, I think they sent one to my home of record. Then my mom sent it back explaining I wasn't there. And within a couple weeks, I got one at my house here. Which I didn't go to...
