An Oklahoma police officer was indicted last week for murder after he allegedly fired nearly 60 rounds at a road-rage suspect earlier this year.

John Mitchell, a 40-year-old lieutenant with the Blackwell Police Department, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Micheal Ann Godsey, 34, on May 20.

Mitchell engaged in "imminently dangerous conduct" when he shot Godsey in Blackwell, located roughly 90 miles north of Oklahoma City, a grand jury concluded last Thursday, alleging the officer wasn't justified in firing dozens of shots at the suspect.

Authorities had responded to reports of gunfire coming from a white pickup truck at various locations in Blackwell when the incident broke out, The Oklahoman reported. Responding officers reportedly pursued Godsey's pickup truck and exchanged gunfire with her before her truck came to a stop.

Godsey was found dead and alone in the driver's seat of her truck, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said.

Mitchell's defense attorney, Gary James, argued the 40-year-old police officer acted lawfully to stop a threat. James said it was a "sad day for law enforcement and society," and described Godsey as a "violent, fleeing felon."

"She shot at the police twice. She has shot at her mother twice. She has shot at a private citizen. We know she fired other rounds around town," James said. "Mitchell gets in behind her. He took his AR-15 and he started shooting through the front windshield at her."

James said Mitchell was cleared by an independent internal affairs review of the shooting. Mitchell faces at least 10 years in prison, if convicted.

Twice? Assuming it was a 30 round clip each time. I am uncertain what the standard issue clip size for police is.

Once, he reloaded once. 30 round magazineis standard on an AR. I initially assumed pistol. Either way, he is going to have some questions to answer at his department on why 30 rounds wasn't enough with a rifle.

So about that, while I disagree with the cop's atrocious aim, I did the math, at 51 cents a round (there are cheaper but I was accounting for Governments getting ripped off), he fired a grand total of $30.60 in ammo. I mean, there are reasons to take issue with this, but const really isn't one.

If she was shooting at him, he probably was full of adrenaline, driving and firing through his windshield, reloading and firing again. Emptying a 30 round mag doesn't take that long and if you know the other person is going around randomly shooting people, you want to put down the threat as soon as possible. It's not like she was running around in the street and he unloaded on her until she collapsed, re-loaded and shot the dead body. He just filled her car up with bullet until he was sure she was dead.

She was driving around shooting at people. She sealed her fate.

I hate 90% of cops, but if the events transpired how they are said here, it's justified. The cop had to stop a threat and he did so. The person was going around shooting at people. What the fuck was the cop supposed to do?

Pfff, ammo needs to be regularly replaced due to the powder breaking down over time from all the shaking in the cruiser. It's like when Trump ordered the use of those GBU-43s, the things were sitting for over a decade and were about to be disposed of regardless.

You can't really say the government wasted munitions when the munitions weren't being used and are due for disposal.
