Apocalypse Now. Lots of psychology, very interesting, good action sequences, and a really interesting look into the mouth of insanity.

The Great Escape. An old fashioned prison break out movie is what I liked best about it.

Full Metal Jacket. Goes down hill after Pyle dies, but I remember being presently surprised seeing it for the first time as a kid in a hotel somewhere. It also introduced me to the Paint It Black (credits). Amazing movie.

I don't watch many war movies, but I did enjoy this Russian film called the 9th Company, about the Soviet invasion into Afghanistan. It was pretty competent (surprising for Russian cinematography around its production time). It tells the story of these guys getting conscripted, going through boot camp, and then going to Afghanistan. It skewed some facts in a pretty bad way towards the end for the sake of making a good movie, which I thought was a little screwed up, but otherwise I liked the pacing and the soundtrack and everything.

Bridge on the River Kwai
Why: great casting and dialogue

I was going to say TGTBATU, but it's not the main focus of the flick, so it felt kinda wrong to say it.

It's a Beautiful Life.
It's a movie about how a happy family is torn apart by the rise of the Nazis and their struggle to find hope in Auschwitz.

Grave of the Fireflies is also a movie I enjoy. It follows a Japanese boy who must care for his sister after being orphaned after an atomic bomb is dropped on his home.

Full Metal Jacket is up there also. I watched it very young and Kubrick's imagery has always stayed with me.

I like Inglorious Basterds also (It's my favorite Tarantino Film) but in general I don't like movies that glorify war. It's unrealistic.

I don't usually enjoy war movies but that one was particularly memorable. Excellent acting performances, especially from Ganz of course.

I would say the first hour of Full Metal Jacket and then Saving Private Ryan.
In FMJ the Drill instructor and basic scenes were great, and SPR was just solid all around plus my Grandfather jumped with the 82nd Airborne and worked along with the 101.

I'm not sure I've ever actually seen one all the way through.

I guess The Great Escape if it counts, but honestly it was kind of a letdown. For one of the all-time classics I was expecting a Cool Hand Luke or Back to the Future-tier film when it was really just mostly inoffensive.
