Do you believe the Democrats have a shot?

http://archive.ph/OKhPJ

If you had told me three years ago that I would ever attend a Donald Trump rally, I would have laughed and assured you that was never going to happen. Heck, if you had told me I would do it three months ago, I probably would have done the same thing. So, how did I find myself among 11,000-plus Trump supporters in Manchester, New Hampshire? Believe it or not, it all started with knitting.

You might not think of the knitting world as a particularly political community, but youd be wrong. Many knitters are active in social justice communities and love to discuss the revolutionary role knitters have played in our culture. I started noticing this about a year ago, particularly on Instagram. I knit as a way to relax and escape the drama of real life, not to further engage with it. But it was impossible to ignore after roving gangs of online social justice warriors started going after anyone in the knitting community who was not lockstep in their ideology. Knitting stars on Instagram were bullied and mobbed by hundreds of people for seemingly innocuous offenses. One man got mobbed so badly that he had a nervous breakdown and was admitted to the hospital on suicide watch. Many things were not right about the hatred, and witnessing the vitriol coming from those I had aligned myself with politically was a massive wake-up call.

You see, I was one of those Democrats who considered anyone who voted for Trump a racist. I thought they were horrible (yes, even deplorable) and worked very hard to eliminate their voices from my spaces by unfriending or blocking people who spoke about their support of him, however minor their comments. I watched a lot of MSNBC, was convinced that everything he had done was horrible, that he hated anyone who wasnt a straight white man, and that he had no redeeming qualities.

But when I witnessed the amount of hate coming from the left in this small, niche knitting community, I started to question everything. I started making a proactive effort to break my echo chamber by listening to voices I thought I would disagree with. I wanted to understand their perspective, believing it would confirm that they were filled with hate for anyone who wasnt like them.

That turned out not to be the case. The more voices outside the left that I listened to, the more I realized that these were not bad people. They were not racists, nazis, or white supremacists. We had differences of opinions on social and economic issues, but a difference of opinion does not make your opponent inherently evil. And they could justify their opinions using arguments, rather than the shouting and ranting I saw coming from my side of the aisle.

I started to discover (or perhaps rediscover) the #WalkAway movement. I had heard about #WalkAway when MSNBC told me it was fake and a bunch of Russian bots. But then I started to meet real people who had been Democrats and made the decision to leave because they could not stand the way t

The article addresses this. The people she met there aren't rabid loyalists as a number of them recognize and dislike his behavior. But the end of the day they respect that he comes off as someone in their corner who'll fight for them as opposed to the other candidates.

And while most people may hate Trump, the more glaring issue is what LightHawKnight said, there's no unity among the democrats. In fact, they all hate and sabotage each other more than they hate Trump.

Now, Trump is always going to present the best case he can. And yes, he lies. This is provable. But the strength of this rally wasnt about the facts and figures. It was a group of people who felt like they had someone in their corner, who would fight for them. Some people say, Well, obviously theyre having a great time. Theyre in a cult. I dont think thats true. The reality is that many people I spoke to do disagree with Trump on things. They dont always like his attitude. They wish he wouldnt tweet so much. People who are in cults dont question their leaders. The people I spoke with did, but the pros in their eyes far outweighed the cons. They dont love him because they think hes perfect. They love him despite his flaws, because they believe he has their back.

This. What they call "purity tests" are actually what the rest of the world call standards.

The only time the right criticize their own is either when they're retiring anyway, dying, or when someone went against the party line(At which they'll be called a DINO).

Otherwise the worse you'll hear is "deeply concerning".... before they fall in line and vote for their leader anyway.

This, but it also applies to the right a well. I hate the saying "the *whatever party I'm not supporting* is eating itself" because it promotes group think rather than viewing people as individuals. We should be able to criticize, disagree, or flat out call out on the people on our side without being called a fake "liberal or conservative".

The way she makes it sound doesn't sound healthy at all. She talks about how at democratic group meetings, they end up having shouting matches. She even talks about in her knitting community some peeps got lambasted like crazy for, as she puts it, "seemingly innocuous offenses".

And how she speaks of MSNBC reminds me of how in another MSNBC clip, one woman remarked that she only voted for Bernie because she disliked how unfairly Bernie was being treated by the news broadcasting channel. Heck, I recall another Sanders supporter talk about how they had a white noise machine at their section for the Iowa primary. And I haven't forgotten about the deliberate misreporting of both Sanders and Yang. With all these factors, with even Clinton saying "No one wants to work with Sanders", and people not being too comfortable with Sanders and playing safe with Pete (as evident by the article writer and his momentum coming out of nowhere), how are we supposed to compete come November?

I don't believe for a minute that the "Left is eating itself alive" is a myth. I'm seeing a repeat of 2016, why Trump won in the first place.

Trump won because there's a huge disconnect between what people want and what the DNC wants.

The DNC was pretty united when it came to Hillary, but the general voting populace didn't care for her. There just wasn't much to motivate people to go out and vote for her outside of the fact that she wasn't Trump.

That blurb sounds like she's swinging between extremes. I only started posting on GameFAQs after I fell out of social justice posting on Tumblr, I couldn't keep up with all the new hashtags and victims of police violence that were popping up every day in the wake of Michael Brown's death. Even as I walked away, I felt bad for the people being killed, but I couldn't memorise all of these different hashtags, names and faces a month for every bad thing that happens. There were weeks where like 3 people would be given the hashtag treatment, and it led to fatigue.

Every time someone was killed, someone was impassioned. That's good, I understand the fight to expose police brutality and discuss the disproportionate amount of minority deaths at the hands of police compared to arrests and sentencing. But how can I move on from one #Remember[Name] post to another two of them in the span of a week? Even if reblogging shit on Tumblr was all I could do, how could I keep going on like that when the posts move on so fast from the last victim? For the sake of my sanity, I couldn't treat every post-BLM victim as the face of a movement. Everyone was getting 15 seconds of fame in their death, and I didn't feel right reblogging every last post for the sake of appearing woke. I couldn't keep up, so I walked away for a while.

I'm still pretty far left, but I had to clear my palate and take some time to really figure myself out. GameFAQs was the alternative I chose for the topics that weren't all squeaky clean. Eventually I made friends with Bok Choi and started chatting on Discords and stuff.

Then I freaked the fuck out on CE and left - again, I swung between extremes. I stayed off here for months because I didn't like the sort of person I was becoming on this platform. Nowadays I can balance myself better, I know what my values are and they're not going to get skewed so easily.

Going from a lefty Democrat to a Trump supporter is a pretty extreme swing. The thing about ideological movements is that once you're in, it's going to be emotionally taxing to break away from it again. You'll feel like you're doing the wrong thing or being selfish, all the negativity levelled against the movement's enemies may get levelled at you for going against the group, and overall it's a bad time. A lot of the guilt I felt walking away from social justice posting was ultimately me putting that weight on my own shoulders, I never had any clout and my Tumblr followers and followed blogs weren't the virulent, witch-hunt types. But those types of callout blogs were out there, and people were cancelled for not stepping into line - even if it meant digging 5+ years into someone's internet history to get buttmad about.

Trump's base is far-right, and they're locked-in to the point of delusion. You have people who loved celebrities like Robert de Niro for years, who collected memorabilia, and the second that celebrity goes against Trump these people are breaking their shit on social media to "send a message". Even the most moderate Trump support serves as a gateway to hate groups and other loony far-right shit, because so many other Trump fans are fanning those flames of division and hate that you're bound to slip into worse and worse habits as you go deeper down the rabbit hole. It feels like a wake-up call to see the really shitty, militant lefty keyboard warriors fucking people over, and that can lead to a justified swing towards topics and places you've typically avoided. But by swinging hard into Trump, you're only going to go through the same process again.

Yeah, those militant lefty dipshits are assholes and what they did isn't excusable, but swinging into Trump will almost certainly see you allying with much, much worse people and the potential for radicalisation is that much higher. The trick in finding a middle ground that's right for you, at the end of the day, is to resist the signs of radicalisation once you feel them set in, and live by your own values separate from the people who would force you into a box. Swinging from super-lefty into Trump supporter is like jumping out of the frying pan and off a cliff - at the end of the day, it's better to set boundaries on shit to keep you on the right track with wiggle room to explore ideas and concepts that the most extreme side of any political compass will disincentivise you from exploring.
