...And they haven't got this system down...at all...not even slightly.

5 months of prep so they could do it worse and more confusingly than they did in spring. Guess when my kindergartener starts next week it's going to be even more atrocious. This was a crappy plan and planned like crap.

Not sure what's more annoying...doing these lessons basically for the teachers so they can keep getting salary and "feel safe" while I probably get put out of a job since I work for a school as well but not as a teacher...or the fact that they all had 5 months and they give us this crap...and people think its a viable alternative to real school anyway

Give everyone the option for thier kids to do at home or in class lessons. If even 30% of the students are all that are going it should at least lower the spread some and not put other school workers out of work and the entire population doing teachers jobs for them so they can be paid while we aren't...because they're so "scared"

I'll take the 100% chance I'm not jobless and evicted vs the 5% or lower chance I catch the virus from work and die thanks.

And hey...it was always about just slowing the spread anyway not seeing the virus gone...so giving people the option to send kids to schools (which CDC has recommended anyway) if they want to do it is definitely in line with that and is the option that doesn't just completely screw over school workers who don't get salary

I guess they're just not tech literate? We have done 20-people webex before. I don't understand why public schools are this grossly incompetent. The children's parents? Yes I can see them has being 100% incompetent. Most families probably do not have the computer for one, let alone multiple children.

Really shame on everyone for abandoning personal computers for mobile.

They didn't get 5 months of prep - probably 2 weeks at best.

We JUST found out that we are doing 2 days at school 3 days at home this week, and school starts in two weeks. Everyone was holding out hope for full time school instead of making the early call and allowing teachers to start planning for online services.

Normally teachers know what is going on and prep the whole first month or so before school.

If so many schools are doing classes online now, why are students restricted to only taking classes taught by their mediocre local school system teachers? What's to stop parents from seeking out the best teachers in their county/state/country. Why force students to sit through Edna Crabapple's class when they could be getting better instruction online at this point?

The teachers have been pretty much left in the dark until the last minute on everything. In school is just as nuts as virtual. Band kids have to wear masks while playing instruments. I thought it was a joke. Then they are buying masks with slits in them for them to play. Isn't that defeating the purpose?

Elementary kids rotating are eating breakfast and lunch sitting on the gym floor because the cafeteria isnt big enough to hold them all and social distance.

Recess is rotated throughout the day and you can only play with your classmates.

Those are the only ones I know right now. My sister is telling me how it is going now that they are starting back up. Her school already has 9 teachers in isolation and 2 positive.

Our local school just lost a third grade teacher after her month long battle with Covid.

Friday we pick up the computer and whatever else we need to do home, virtual learning. I am sure it will be difficult but I have a feeling our on campus learning will be disrupted with starts and stops due to outbreaks. Get ready for a wild and weird school year.

I constantly heard everyone say "just get a job if you're on unemployment"...like all summer

But the district and our direct supervisors told us constantly that we'd be coming back and there would be a definite need for us when schools restarted. And since it was so hard to find anything anyway...and I liked my job with the school it was assumed to be pointless to just go do something else. They were paying decently enough for unemployment...and the assumption was itd be available and not run out before we alll went back to work next semester.

Now the schools want to completely decide for every parent in my district that they all HAVE to keep their kids home...when all this stuff is suddenly running out at the same time and they are basically hitting us with blow after blow.

Well...hope any districts that do this lose ALL of their non salaried employess and suffer GREATLY when they try to reopen and have non of them ready and available for work. I hope its so bad they stay shut down longer and/or lose funding. They deserve to suffer for this.

Luckily every district needs employees...going to a better one where they did reopen and just gave parents the option for at home lessons.

I have no doubt about that. However teachers should not risk their own health just because some folk can't look after their own kids for whatever reason during a pandemic. Although with that said in the UK at least some teachers are actually still working looking after/teaching key workers kids so I guess some are risking their own health anyway. I believe all schools are opening in September over here so it's not that long to wait regardless. My brothers OH is back in a classroom then so that should be fun.

its to control the spread in general. And 3rd graders and kindergarteners will clearly spread in a couple of weeks and bring it home to all of their families.

At times, if you enjoy the actual teacher part of being a teacher.

What's not so great is working when you're not working(lesson plans, grading, etc.), not having income over the summer, babysitting asshole kids that get worse each year, etc.

All on a $40k salary. Which ain't bad, until you consider the work that goes into being a teacher and the teaching skillset that most parents don't appreciate. My Mom had to get her Master's to continue teaching and her salary peaked at just over $50k in Ohio. Now that she's in Florida, she's back to making borderline $40k.

You really have to enjoy being a teacher for it to be a worthwhile profession in any capacity.

But TC's an ignorant toilet cleaner and I can sympathize with that, so it's okay for him to be petty and grossly misinformed.

Part of paying for a school that isn't in your district, county, or even state is the boarding and such for a private school. That's not what I'm talking about. The whole reason a student is more or less locked in to their city school district is pure proximity.

If Covid has moved classes online, there's literally no need for any of that. Bad teachers should be swept aside. This is a great time to clean house. Let them keep their union "tenure" protection for all I care.

My point is, if classes are going to be online for the foreseeable future, what's the point in keeping mediocre teachers around simply for their ability to babysit? Their mere presence for the purpose of warehousing kids for 8ish hours a day isn't a thing.

With online teaching, there's no reason for the kids that want to learn having to suffer the finest education property taxes can buy locally and there's no point in charging tens of thousands of dollars for "private schooling" from home.

There's an opportunity here for "public education" to up it's game and it seems like it is being entirely squandered.

Teaching is just a bach degree and certification with maybe a few extra classes...the fact that some here think it speaks to being of a "higher level" kind of tells me the kind of smaller thinking I should probably expect from the norm gamefaqs POTD "pro 100% school shutdown" kind of person.

I mean sure I only did 10 years after college working horrible and ridiculously political office work...actually with a lot of people who probably thought like those in this thread do (that it was "high level" super achievement work and theyd gotten somewhere). But after that...when it was okay to settle for a little less and not be as stressed every day there was the bus driving thing.

Probably career wise not even an idea in the head of many here for a couple of years really so I see the disconnect.

Regardless...it took forever to get to this stage and work wasn't making me just want to slap every annoying office-gossiping face I saw every day. It was a huge effort and a lot of pain to get to this stage in life though.

So to now have it ripped away...or attempted at least to be ripped away because people, especially teachers are STILL whining about the virus. Yeah...they deserve no sympathy. Even worse is they have made this online stuff all on the parents anyway. So why even pay them anymore? I thought thier amazing bach degrees were supposed to make them deities right? But if just all the parents are doing it anyway could it be its not so special after all?!? Shock.

Luckily most districts are opening up regardless. Going to start next week with one that's actually closer. One that was probably more reasonable and told the teachers and principals etc to shove off with thier whining. Hope they all get fired.

It varies from state to state, teaching in CA has the hardest requirements by far. Not only do you need a bachelors but you need an additional year (min) to get the observation hours/student teaching etc done. Many just get their masters at the same time (since you can include many of the parts for credits towards getting a masters anyway).

You also need to pass the CSETS which are college level testing for various subjects, to teach elementary you need to pass them all. You need to pass the RICA and a buncha other crap, and student teaching costs $5000 (3 months of teaching a class while being observed).

So yeah, it's not just an easy degree.
