i haven't played much of FFT or whatever genre this applies to

what's the functional (as opposed to flavorful) difference between warriors and knights?

every other role looks like it has a niche, although i don't know what merchants/machinists do

Archers, easily. Garbage in Etrian Odyssey (worst class in Nexus and inferior to the class that uses guns). Garbage in FFT. Passable in Fell Seal.

Bards are great fun and usually really different from all the rest, even if they're not always very effective.

Who needs Red Mages? Are they ever the best option? What do they bring to the table? Nothing.

Plus the ability to raise someone on a DPS class without blowing Swiftcast... and then dive in, dump your mana on melee, and lovingly backflip off Titan's platform.

Red mages are great, it's the playerbase that sucks. See also: DRG floor tanks.

Red mages are kind held back by dabbling in both magics and physical combat, while not excelling at any of it.

However they can do the basics of 3 jobs at once, freeing up space. Warriors and knights are two sides of one coin.

Merchants or bards. They can disappear for what it is worth.

Generally:
- by hard casting their 5 second spells after pull.
- by padding muh deeps instead of tossing out an instant rez with literally no drawback.
- By using their LB3 and blinding the raid momentarily.
- by using their movement repositioning tools to instantly kill themselves, almost anathema to black Mage "sit still and turret up" gameplay.
- by even bothering with Vercure when there's something to hit.

I actually had a case yesterday where I got to actually use vercure, in semi current content !!!. I was excited since it was the first time this ever happened. e6n, a bard grabbed a tether off me at very low hp, and the healers were currently sulking and refusing to accept rez's because the other two RDMs kept dying or something. so I popped a vercure on them and they survived it with like 100 hp yeahhhhh

but i then died as one of the other RDMs used LB3 and i couldn't see anything

As I recall Red Mages in BD actually get useful abilities. And in FF1 they're valid enough just because you can't change classes the whole game. But I'd probably never use them in FF5, and in 3 they're not one of the 2 endgame classes. I dunno, Bard still seems worse. Crafting is a whole other thing. They don't have to be good in combat.
