Board 8 > Worst time ever with Chocobo Catcher in FFX *spoilers maybe

I've replayed FFX numerous times including the HD remaster but it has been a while since I really went for a 100% completion. So figured why not since its always been fun to do so.

But hooo boy the Chocobo Catcher game for the Sun Sigil is driving me up the wall. I know this game is infamous for being a little luck based and having terrible controls but as far as my history with FFX goes, I've never really had too much trouble with it. Apart from the very first time I've tried for the Sun Sigil, I don't think I've ever gone beyond half an hour and my last memory of it was that, it wasn't bad at all.

So now, I've been at it for more than an hour and while I've come close a couple of times, nothing has been more infuriating to find out that I got a literal 0.00 time once and it does not give me the Sigil. Just, what the hell man. I've been having a couple terrible runs the last couple of tries so I just switched off my PS5 and decided to take a break.

My main issue is, the controls for the Chocobo sucks ass. The other issue is the RNG with the balloons and the birds. Most times I don't get hit but I end up with way less balloons than I need. The times I do get enough balloons I get bombarded with birds right near the end. I don't know if it was just easier to control on the PS2 (because all my numerous 100% files before were on there) and the controls are somehow jankier on the PS4 or maybe I'm just older now and am less tolerant to these kinda bullshit.

I just don't remember this mini-game being as bad as people made it out to be. I was always apologetic towards it but now I totally feel the pain.

I got it but this did not feel good. I felt like I got really lucky with the balloons and enemy placement because my previous couple of tries, I wasn't even close.

Time to pick my other poison. Lightning dodging or Butterfly catching.

Butterfly is easy for me, Lightning is tedious but fine

I swear to god, lightning dodging was never an issue. The only times I used to mess up was when I wasn't actually even trying or when I got nervous after getting like 150. Jesus christ, am I getting to old for this or is this actually harder on the HD remaster?

I have always found lightning dodges the most tedious. I have the attention span of a spoon so trying to stand in one area and dodge 200 times just kills me. All the rest are manageable for me

I have gotten lucky with Chocobo Catcher. I never bothered with Lightning as Lulu's weapon is entirely useless, but it's either that or the really long grind necessary for Wakka's.

...None of them are good sidequests though. Auron's is fine I guess.

Always Blitzball for me, you just have to play soooo many games of it. Second is the lightning dodges just because screwing up late is so soul crushing but even that all you have to do is run in a corner and keep the rhythm of the bolts coming down.

Never understood how people had problems with the chocobo race, always thought it was the easiest one. Yea you can get unlucky but it really shouldn't take more than 5 tries at it.

It can just be broken in so many ways that it isn't fun to me. Get a goal then sit on your side of the field and wait, Jecht Shot is broken, Brother can gather everyone on the other team and then out run them for a free shot in front of the net with no blockers etc. etc.

Lightning dodging has a method to cheese it and makes it pretty easy. I never had bad luck with chocobo catcher.

For me it has to be blitzball since that takes hours to do.

Butterflies, for me.

The rest are just timesinks where progress is easy to restart if you screw up (or screw-up proof, just really, really long, like Rikku/Wakka/Auron)

I mean sure but you don't have to play that way. You can choose not to intentionally break the game and have a lot of fun with it.

Basic math simulator with random chance is not really fun, because the animations leave a bunch to be desired over the initial "hehe I just kicked that dickbag from Luca in the face"

Well, yes, but usually there's plot involved other than Sportsball.

Also, the calculations are usually more complex than "which is higher, and did the flag to randomly double one number trigger."

I've never had the patience to dodge lightning. Also if you screw up, it has the greatest potential for amount of time and progress lost.

Which is why you play a game or two at every new save point, and you'll meet the criteria by the time you reach the endgame.

You actually have to get less than 0. I've heard stories from players who got exactly 0 and it didn't count.

There's a precise counter and it visually rounds to 0.0. That's why sometimes 0 counts and sometimes it doesn't.

Lightning or chocobo.

Lightning is just tedious and has input lag issues on the remaster. Chocobo can be super easy if you happen to get a good balloon pattern but awful if you don't.

Blitzball can also be tedious but it's really easy to shorten the time required by resetting data.

Am I the only one that actually enjoys Chocobo Catcher? Like, that's something I actually look forward to when I play FFX. I did that part for a few of my friends when they got frustrated by it.

Personally I find butterfly catching to be the worst on a per-minute basis but blitzball is just so long I voted for that.

I used a macro for lightning dodging because fuck that. I had no such recourse for Chocobo Catcher. I vaguely remember something about it being more broken, or impacted by framerate, in HD?

Blitzball sucks and it takes forever for Wakka's thing to come up. For me it's pretty clearly that one. Some of the others are annoying but blitzball gets tiring after like game 1 and after that winds up quickly being so easy it's irrelevant, and just has so much time devotion. Inused to like blitzball back in the day but imo it's truly a drag

This explains a lot. Lightning dodge was never ever an issue for me on the PS2. Here I can barely crack 20 before getting struck down.

Yeah like I mentioned in my OP, I got a 0.00 but didn't get the Sigil.

Finally did Lightning Dodge. I looked at some forums online that suggested to switch to Game Mode on HDTV to make the input lag better which was a godsend.

I did it but not after I choked at around the 180 mark once.

Maybe I'm too old for this stuff now.

Whenever the prizes change they are determined the moment you load the blitzball menu and actually see them. Knowing this and the requirements for each item you can have saved beforehand and reload as needed. And for the ones with a battle number requirement you can put off that blitzball menu load indefinitely.

Every time I start one of these minigames I'm like "nah" after about 5 minutes. I love FFX but 100%ing it just feels like work
