I got some Italian food the other day, and the girl that gave me the food was flirting with me for tips.

Well, I don't tip when I order to go, and I didn't expect it when I was a waiter. I'm wondering if I did a dick move? Is it a thing to tip when picking up to go nowadays? I haven't been a waiter for like 8 years now, so I'm out of the loop on restaurant etiquette.

It's not a big thing here, but I been tipping via auto-rounding up lately. It's not much, but I suppose it adds up after a lot of transactions

But tipping in America is like healthcare... ... defend it out of spite.

Yeah; I'll tip a dollar, but only if they don't tack on a carryout charge.

The only place I get carryout is Pappa murphies, and I literally tip if they put extra mozz on top instead of the mixed cheese (cause I don't like yellow cheese) and don't charge me for it.

If they charge me, no tip, if they don't I give them the charge in a tip.

I don't tip no but it's not really common over here. The only time I've ever tipped for a service is when in Poland and even then it wasn't much.

No. They did nothing for you. The tip is for the driver or the waiter/waitress not the person who stands behind the counter and can be replaced with a computer.
Keep in mind when I tip I usually tip like 20-25%.

No. It's becoming very passive-aggressive anymore too. Nearly every credit card machine will ask if you want to tip with the 5, 10, and 20% buttons and I always say no.

I tip on take out from a restaurant where I normally would of tipped if I went and sat down and ate, usually getting curbside pickup. I used to tip just a dollar or 2 but I tend to tip between 10-15% now and started doing this during the pandemic. Order at the counter type of places I occasionally tip a dollar or 2 but not always.

They started that shit during Covid or just after here. I looked some goober in the face and was like, "People are really tipping people for checking them out? That used to be a thing at the sushi bar at Koto's back in '03 but that was special."

He was like, I guess they did it to help with wages. And I said, "Look buddy, I'll tell you like I tell my barber. I'll give you a tip, but I'm not tipping the federal government anymore of the money. And he said he wasn't allowed to accept tips personally. But somehow it's ok for the delivery drivers.

I usually 2x to 5x the normal tip, depending on what it is unless it's an expensive gratuitiy. I've always been generous, but for just extra? Like giving a $20 to my detailer every few months? They gotta earn that. And the people I tip shouldn't have to be claiming it on taxes. Let the fat cats do that. Hell, the taxes in tips here probably wouldn't even fund a single missile for an F22.

No. Never. People need to stop normalizing this shit. They didn't bring the food to you, you just picked it up from the counter.

It's basically the fault of one company, too! Guilting people into tipping for pretty much everything is their entire goal. I'm sure the more people pay using their system has no impact at all on their own profits, it's purely to help the working class by making everyone feel awkward and uncomfortable. Totally.

No, because it's stupid and not done in any other industry. Honestly, tipping shouldn't be a thing at all -- certainly not an expectation.

I rarely do that, but I always tip wherever it's customary. Tipping definitely shouldn't be required for anyone to make a decent wage, but that's the reality in this country, so I do.

In a restaurant with sit-down service and wait staff I tip every time - usually 20%.

When I'm picking up my own pizza at the local pizza place, no way am I tipping.

If it's sit down service or the like w/ a waiter/waitress actually bringing you stuff, or delivery, etc... I tip.
Going to the counter to pick up my own order? Hell no.

Tipping sucks, it should be phased out and the people who rely on it given normal wages. It's one thing to be stuck w/ it due to social inertia. It's a whole other thing to expand a terrible idea to ever more areas.

I'll tip the Jersey Mike's employees. Hell, the shit is already $40, might as well through in another $5. They have a good personality and can keep up with a good conversation too. At least where I go.

I didn't force them to work there.

the one making the food is doing all the work. waiters aren't doing anything if you pick up the food

I've never tipped because in my country the employees actually get properly paid and don't have to rely on small scraps from the customers.

It must be kinda embarassing to be forced to ask about small change from complete strangers.

Depends on the complexity of the order and the type of restaurant.

this is also now complicated by the fact that since covid many upscale high end restaurants are still doing take out even post lockdowns.

even so when I do I dont tip the same as if I was sitting down to eat there and being waited on.

If I'm gonna drive there to pick up food myself, I'm not tipping. The exception being the amazing small-business Chinese place near me that I love, I'll usually tip 5 bucks or something. Their food makes me so happy so I need to make sure they stay in business!

The steamed dumplings and crab rangoon is worth it. Mongolian Beef, extra spicy.

It depends a little bit. If I'm picking up a pizza or something like that then I don't tip. If I'm going to a real restaurant and grabbing a good meal, I'll tip.

I didn't do take out often prior to the pandemic and when take out became a really common thing during the pandemic I started tipping because I was glad it was possible to get a good meal without having to cook and I know that the staff in our country isn't paid a living wage without a tip.

I think it's stupid that they don't get paid well, but I'm not about to lecture a 20 year old about how dumb it is. I'm going to tip because I'm not a prick.

Never did before the pandemic. But since then I have, mostly because I feel bad for the business and I like the place because they're nice. With that said though, I rarely buy takeout so tipping them every so often doesn't bother me if I feel like they deserved it.

Tipping doesn't keep a business in business since it doesn't go to the business itself.

That's the thing. Over here we get minimum wage regardless so don't have a tipping system. My brother works in the hospitality industry and while he still got a wage he sometimes got tips. Tips are nothing more than a extra bonus though for us. What is odd I find is it's mostly just the hospitality industry that uses tips. I've never seen or had anyone give me a tip when working in retail for example. I'm not sure why this is.
