I don't care about gaming enough for this to even be in my top 1000 of things I'd care about someone saying on a first date.

Isn't the problem moreso that the player doesn't have functional choice? The quest is called "Kill Paarthurnax!" and there's no way to resolve it except by doing just that. There's no release or even conversation for the player if they don't want to do it, it just sits in the quest log like an unfinished chore. Meanwhile the faction that's supposed to be reverent to you as the Dragonborn shuts down unless you complete the quest with no alternative.

Lol at the Mario irony already pointed out, but imagine the most unlikable, unhelpful person you know coming up to you out of the blue and telling you that the coolest, most helpful person you know is actually an ex-con, and if you don't cut the cool guy out of your life completely then the shrew and all her friends won't be your friends anymore.

The actual moral dilemma as it looks on paper is a bit deeper than that, but the above is how Bethesda's crack writing team chose to deliver it.

That is another bungling on the design of it, yes. Thankfully the quest disappears from the log after the MQ is completed if you've chose to ignore it, at which point you can have dialogue with both Parthy and Arngeir that unofficially wraps things up.

Oh and these awful, unhelpful people are supposed to be your followers. You are literally their leader.

Eh, I played for over 100 hours, but like most Bethesda games, I mostly avoided the main quest and didn't beat it.

I power leveled my sneak and one handed skills and got them to legendary level multiple times. Several in game days later I got a message saying he died. I went up there and his skeleton then shot across the world like I'd just giant smashed him horizontally. Needless to say, Skyrim sure is hilarious because of the bugs.

Haven't played in a decade.
