Do you think getting married is appealing from a legal standpoint? If you're married, how long have you been married?

I am, no regrets. I like being an official family and sharing my life with someone, as well as knowing that we both intend for this to last forever.

Nah. I'm too jaded. I've seen too many marriages fail. Too many who stayed in a bad situation because of money, kids, or a misplaced sense of loyalty.

I have no desire for a relationship in the first place so marriage is definitely out of the question.

consider? Yes. I would consider it, if I met somebody I felt that way about

given I am wired incorrectly in a variety of ways and a hermit on top of that, that's incredibly unlikely, but I would consider it.

From a legal perspective? Meh. It shouldn't be a legal thing, I think. I get that it kinda has to be from a tax perspective and all that, but still

What's the point of a girlfriend if you don't want to get married? I always thought that was the whole purpose.

I've been married 15yrs. I was among the last of my peers to marry. We collectively have a low (but not zero) divorce rate. If you are already in a long term relationship, then being married simplifies a lot of things and also enables better long-term planning.
We didn't have a kid until ten years into our marriage, which seems to have worked out well.

Damn...

Why damn?

In my previous relationship, we were both from the same country. We lived together as if married for over a decade, but never felt the need to actually get married as there was no benefit.

Now, Im a foreigner. Marrying allows me a visa, as well as greatly increasing my ability to acquire property here.

Why does it have to be?

Not necessarily. If both are employed and don't have kids, then sure. If you got 2-3 kids, you're likely poorer than a single person with a single income.

Who said anything about kids?

But since you bring it up there are a completely different set of tax breaks when you start having kids.

But it's not worth it because all those tax breaks are negated by you spending on your kids.

Thats why the other guys using it as an sxcuse was incorrect.

The tax system is designed to make things easier for married people with kids.
