Never watched the anime.

The show wasn't bad at all. I actually fairly enjoyed it.

What was the consensus regarding it here? Did anime fans enjoy it? Did it break the live-action anime curse?

I just hit episode 400 of the anime.

If they toned down the violence and swearing, it'd be a decent family show.

As a long time fan of the manga. It's a solid adaptation that made a few. Interesting changes. I mostly had a good time but I would have preferred it be just a tiny bit more faithful.

The live-action run added in a bunch of scenes with Helmeppo, Garp, and Koby. They're all super important characters but most of One Piece is about the Strawhats. Not the Marines. Having them around on a parallel adventure feels bizarre and at times out of place. Especially when to make room for them it seems like every single bad guy crew had their first mate cut. No Django, no Hachi, the Krieg Pirates skipped entirely.

Imagine like. Watching the Avengers but they cut Captain America from the script entirely and then used all of Cap's screentime to talk about the minutia of Stark Industries.

I read the manga and watch the anime. The Netflix show inspired me to start the anime from the beginning again. I think Buggy stole the show in the Netflix show, which kinda surprised me.

I watched the material covered in the anime about, maybe, 10 years ago? Multiple times at least. So, I admit I've had problems with the changes they've made in the story. But in spite of that, it's good! It tells a similar story in a more fast paced way. The casting is also, frankly, perfect. I think almost every actor is true to their character.

The anime probably has pretty broad appeal. It gets dark, but it's less violent than DBZ.

The live action one has some gore, nudity, and an F bomb.

The live action was pretty good. There were some changes I wouldn't have made personally, but most of those were personal issues. Overall I'd see more of it.

Your analogy doesn't work because Captain America is the face of the Avengers. That comparison would be akin to cutting Luffy.

Your comparison would only work comparing against another tertiary character (which wouldn't be the Avengers because in your comparison the Avengers are the Strawhats).

Yeah, this would be more like cutting Ebony Maw, Thanos' most recognizable minion, out of Infinity War. Like he did a decent amount of interesting stuff but the plot wouldn't suffer greatly if he just didn't exist as a character.

Never saw the anime, saw pictures or memes here and there, but didn't get them. The show was an easy 10/10. Nearly every episode was perfect. Great mix of humor, drama, and emotional connections.

I agree. My original analogy was Dragon Ball Z but without Nappa, Jeice, Android 16, etc. But I had no idea if TC watches anime or not so I tried pivoting to something more universal.

I think its about a 7/10 in its own right, quite decent.

Judged as an adaptation it's a poor one but its pretty obvious they weren't worried about that which is fine.

I've never seen the anime and I enjoyed the Netflix show
