Most of the big names in it moved on to trap or house, so I was surprised to see people are still making it for some reason. I don't think that shit is even popular at festivals anymore.

It was a derogatory term used to describe dubstep that was full of wubs and robot noise shit. Used as a term to distinguish it from the rest of dubstep, as traditional dubstep sounds nothing like "wubstep".

Seriously? I remember that shit used to dominate Coachella, but I hadn't seen much of it on their lineups in the last couple years. I can't really speak for glastonbury or other UK festivals though.

Trap and house (especially house) have definitely taken over the popularity of dubstep in most festivals in terms of EDM, but dubstep is having a recent surge in popularity due to "crystep" becoming a bigger and bigger thing. Basically a bunch of future bass producers (feelsy emotional EDM) are either collaborating with dubstep producers or are just making dubstep themselves. These kind of artists with this style are recently getting top billing at lots of EDM festivals and are rising up in popularity, some recent examples are Illenium and Slander (these guys were billed pretty high in Coachella's 2020 lineup) who have really taken off the past few years.

Here's a few examples of "crystep":

I always consider artists like illenium an offshoot of trap, but trap has kind of become this all encompassing umbrella term for lots of bass heavy stuff.

Illenium's earlier stuff was a definitely more of a hybrid of trap and future bass, but he now heavily leans more into mixing dubstep and future bass (crystep basically).

This is an earlier song of his with a trap drop: https://youtu.be/g80hMksipbI

And this is a newer song with a dubstep drop: https://youtu.be/E4jggmGSoOk

I guess this is what I think of when I try to think of trap and dubstep as two different things, rather than an umbrella term kind of thing for trap like you mentioned. Two distinct kind of things IMO
