I would hardly consider myself an "anime guy," but I've thoroughly enjoyed DBZ (and Kai), Death Note, and- most recently- Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (which is probably my favorite of the bunch). Seeing as nothing will ever, ever match up with the raw scope and sheer epicness of that finale, I'm hoping some other anime can at least match up with the show as far as plot goes. Bordering on the convoluted is fine, so long as it doesn't take things too far!
Also, I have no interest in anything related to Lelouch. Suggestions?

Sorry, I should've asked this in the OP, but could I get a very brief summary with each suggestion? I'm afraid of going to Wikipedia out of spoilers. Thanks!

Seconding Higurashi though also mentioning that unless you have an aversion to reading, you should read the Visual Novel instead (especially if mind blowing is what you want, as it does that better... as well as everything else). If you do, though, the anime is okay I guess.
Summary: A boy named Keiichi Maebara moves into a really small, out-in-the-country town named Hinamizawa. There, he meets 4 girls that he quickly becomes friends with, Mion Sonozaki, Rena Ryugu, Satoko Hojo, and Rika Furude. He joins their 'club' which is basically just an excuse for them to get together and play board games/other stuff, and generally has a good time. Then he discovers that Hinamizawa has a 'dark past' in that one person dies and another disappears each year on the night of the Watanagashi Festival... and starts to suspect that his new friends might be in on the mysterious past of the town.
Also you have to make it to episode 4 of Higurashi if you start. I thought the first 2 episodes were terrible, but its elaborate setup. You cant stop after the first 2

You want mind-blowing plot, it's got to be Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Actually, I don't know too much about the anime, I'm pretty sure they botched it up badly, but the original manga...I couldn't even finish it because it started getting too confusing.

Ulti (in one of his Post-Contest Analyses): God of War turned a 5 hour deadlock into a total laugher Anagram: Oh God, Tidus and Yuna were involved?
Reminiscent of Higurashi in that small town is hit with bizarre murders. Similarities end there though. Features an ensemble cast (a lot of characters) and is stylish in it's animation and directed fast-paced and wonderfully. Lots of death an some themes of moral ambiguity.
Gurren la- (sees you watched it) ...<nod of approval>
Indeed, friend, ****ing indeed.
So thanks a lot for the suggestions! Always open for more, but I feel it's best to start with Higurashi. And since I have a slight affinity for mechanime (at least thanks to TTGL), is this "Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta" show a good one too?

The future must protect the clone's past. "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel.
Zeta Gundam is the sequel series to the original show. The original will help tremendously in getting accustomed to the universe and mythos, but watch it in the condensed movie trilogy version; trust me, it's better. And it's still long. But it sets you up for Zeta nicely.
I picked Zeta because it gets kind of mind-blowing in its tendency to kill people of in shocking and effective ways. And the finale is something else.
Victory Gundam is another good recommendation. It's set much farther down the original timeline's rabbit hole, but it's pretty unrelated because of it.

Wiki's being unclear about which movies constitute the "condensed trilogy." Does it start with Char's Counterattack?

Oh no. Char's Counterattack is set after the original, Zeta and ZZ. Definitely don't watch that!
I should warn you, the first film is pretty plodding. The animation behind those movies is also kind of... uhh, Scooby Doo-riffic. We're talking about something originally from 1979 here so try to bear that in mind.
The third movie, though, is all kinds of awesome.

From: Maniac64 | #033 I don't know if it quite qualifies as mind blowing, but Code Geass is awesome and has some great twists and shocking moments. Plus it has mechs.
for some...inane...reason, he doesnt want code geass i hope because he's already seen it and enjoyed it thoroughly

Gundam I: The Movie Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow Gundam III: Encounters in Space Zeta Gundam A New Translation: Heirs to the Stars Zeta Gundam A New Translation II: Lovers Zeta Gundam A New Translation III: Love is the Pulse of the Stars Gundam ZZ Char's Counterattack
That covers the Amuro/Char saga nicely. Though I advise against watching the Zeta movies and instead watch the entire show. It's that good.
I'll throw another rec for Cowboy Bebop and Code Geass since I haven't watched Higurashi. Seems weird you wouldn't want Code Geass considering you liked DN...
The only one I could think of that would qualify is Misa, who gets drastically better near the end.
near is also a pretty terrible character, he pretty much ruins the whole series of mind ****s that took place prior to his entry by consistently grabbing his conclusions out of thin air
death note is still probably my second favorite anime though
Don't make another topic until you've seen it. All of it. Unless it's a watch-through topic.
