The only question is, say hypothetically Destination X did some great buyrate for TNA, and say Hardcore Justice next month dips back down to their normal levels, would they do anything to react accordingly?

Or are the "trouble spots" on the TNA payroll too firmly entrenched?

Experience tells me no. In any case, I'm not going to buy it. I think TNA is starting to fall off again, and the gap between them and WWE right now is negligible at best. Also, I'm fairly close to giving up wrestling entirely as it takes up way too much of my time for the amount I actually enjoy it <_<

And the sad thing is, in splitting their attention between building up Destination X and building up next week's big Impact, they've effectively done a mediocre job on both fronts.

I can't say that personally because I value A.J. Styles too much. I legitimately think he's the best babyface in the business today, when given the opportunity.

The X Division in general may be the soul of TNA, but A.J. Styles specifically is the spine. Without him, it would all just crumble under its own weight, and the results wouldn't be pretty.

i honestly don't think there's anything tna could do to catch WWE short of cena, orton, hhh, taker, and rey all jumping ship

i don't even know how wcw managed it for as long as they did

I don't think anyone really expects them to catch WWE (outside of a complete WWE collapse or something).

I do think they could be doing a lot more to actually be "the alternative" that they so desperately market themselves as.

Instead for the most part they're just WWE with some Attitude Era/WCW flavor.

Speaking of A.J. Styles, it's almost PWI 500 time again. He won't be defending his crown at the #1 kayfabe wrestler in the world this year. <_<

The grading period is 8/1/10 through 7/31/11 (not really but ostensibly). Who do you think some of the top placers will be this year?

I think Orton has #1 locked up. 2 moderately lengthy WWE/World Title reigns, no real major defeats to speak of.

In fact I can't even think of anyone else who comes close in WWE or TNA. All the other World Champs over the last year (Sheamus, RVD, Kane, Hardy, Edge, Miz, Anderson, Dolph (lol), Sting, Christian, and Cena) all have glaring deficiencies in their resumes.

I think Davey Richards has a legitimate shot at #2.

Aside from the loss to Roddy at Final Battle, Davey's undefeated in singles over the grading period I believe, and he avenged that loss to Strong at HTCS1.

RVD doesn't lose much, but he doesn't win a lot of big matches either since he came back from being carved up by Abyss. He tends to find himself in Double Countouts or being the one not pinned in multi-man matches. <_<

RVD will be Top Five though to be sure. That sort of win-loss record, plus a World Title, plus being active over the majority of the timeframe is good enough for that.

Generico's been going up the card quite nicely with wins over Roddy and Daniels, but still shouldn't be as high, no. Eddie's had a pretty fantastic year however, but did lose to Davey.

I think Edge actually has had a stronger year than Cena, despite being retired for the last 1/3 of it.

Sadly I don't think he'll be ranked, but instead listed as retired. IMO someone who retires during the year should just be ranked wherever their accomplishments merit and then listed as retired next year, but that's just me.

anyway, i still think eddie might be higher if the grading ends the 31st

longer period as world champ and i think it includes the tail end of his tv title reign. he also won survival of the fittest.

i doubt he has very many singles losses either...vs. daniels and vs. davey i guess? and he avenged the loss to daniels.

as for generico, he has a tv title win and won the biggest feud of the grading period.

claudio could be up there as well. he was one half of the roh and chikara tag champs for the majority of the grading period as well as PWG world champion.

Davey's loss to Tyler was in June of 2010, so that's out, but he did actually DEFEAT Tyler (while Tyler was still the reigning Champion) in an excellent match at last August's HDNet tapings which would factor in.

Yeah, I think Eddie's only losses are to Daniels (avenged) and Davey, plus a time-limit draw with Daniels, but the knock against him IMO is that he spent the first 1/3 of the period still as a midcarder, before the Survival of the Fittest win and subsequent elevation.

Davey's been consistently winning in singles against ROH main eventers all year.

ROH has historically not gotten a lot of love from the PWI 500 though so any dreams of Davey or Eddie placing extremely high might be short-sighted.

The highest any ROH guy has ever ranked is #6 (Nigel in 2009).

btw guys who are one title away from becoming the second triple crown winner!

- aj styles, el generico and christopher daniels need to win the roh world championship
- tyler black, austin aries, cm punk, roderick strong, and davey richards need to win the roh world television championship
- samoa joe, bryan danielson, and nigel mcguinness need to win the roh world tag team championship

i think that's all of them

el generico seems the most likely if daniels is sticking with tna

amazingly, none of them seem all that likely!

Just going through some results, Eddie also has a loss to Tyler Black last August in a Champion vs. Champion match.

Davey's only other singles loss appears to be in the Holiday Gauntlet, which is not really a normal circumstance.

EDITED NOTE: Yeah, he was #8 in 2008 as well, the only ROH guy to be ranked in the Top Ten twice. Heck, the only other ROH guy to ever crack the Top Ten was Morishima clocking in at #10 in 2007.

Out of your list there I actually think Strong is the most likely. I feel like a TV Title reign would be a good landing spot for him before retooling him for another main event run.

I think they probably plan on using the TV Title moreso for up-and-comers rather than main eventers needing something different to do though, so it might be unlikely, yeah.
