It's fantastic. Major changes you should know: TMs are infinitely reusable now, and HMs are barely necessary to beat the game. You can beat the game without learning a single HM beside Cut (and maybe Surf). Note also that the starters are probably the worst of the series, ignoring the GSC ones. But they're more than made up for thanks to the number of Pokémon that are more than powerful enough to replace them that you can catch later. There is a deficiency in good water Pokémon but you can still find an improvement over the water starter without too much effort.
