37.Time of the Dreamwatch (Chrono Cross)

Appeared in: VGMC 1, ToC(lost to Second Tower)

One of my favorite songs for quite a while. A fantastic medley of songs such as Dreams of the Shore and the Chrono Trigger main theme, amongst other themes I can’t recognize. A true classic among classics.


36.Main Theme (Valkyria Chronicles)

Appeared in: VGMC3, 4

One of Hitoshi Sakimoto’s songs that I like more every time I listen to it. A really uplifting song that gets you ready for the TIDES OF WAR.


35.Aria de Mezzo Carratere (Final Fantasy VI)

Appeared in: VGMC3

Currently my favorite FF song but it was really close between that You’re Not Alone. The ‘magnus opus’ of Final Fantasy 6, a fantastic ‘opera’ song that is very emotional and sweeping. Shame it got such a hard match-up in VGMC3 R1 and hasn’t come back yet since.

I played Chrono Cross first.

It's fine, but there are a lot of problems with it. Most of them are easy to overlook if you enjoy the good parts though.

I am, but not as much as RE=NATION. The only thing I'm really consistent on in terms of Ar tonelico hymns is that SPHILIA is my favorite, and RE=NATION is my 2nd favorite (Out of AT1 and AT2, haven't played AT3). After that it gets a bit messy and I can change around the order a lot. RIG=VEDA probably ends up as the next AT1 hymn for me though, I think only LINKER has a shot at jumping in front of it. I pretty much like all Ar tonelico hymns though (exceptions exist of course, but they're pretty rare), so it's very close for most of them outside the Top 2.

What's up with Chrono Cross's soundtrack? As a VGMusic fan, I was looking forward to listen to Chrono Cross's OST, but before that, the first song I listened from that game was Magical Dreamers on the VGMusic of the Day channel (posted by Ange, BTW), and I thought it was good, yet not outstanding (but I think he also called it "underrated", so naturally it didn't sound too special to me).

A couple of months later, I stumbled onto Dreamwatch of Time on a VGMusic Contest, and ever since, it blew me away to a degree were it managed to enter to my Top 10 just like that (spot #6 to be exact), so I just immediately understood why Chrono Cross OST received its praise, but every other song from that soundtrack has been just ranging from "good" to "a little above average" to "meh", so I don't understand what's up with that. I still have just listened to a handful of songs, so I can't speak for the rest of the OST, but that's just weird.

34.Endless Nine (Umineko no Naku Koro ni 4: Alliance of the Golden Witch)

Appeared in: VGMC4

Choosing between voting this and Shadowlord in VGMC4 in R4 was one of the harder decisions I’ve had to make in a pre-bracket semi-final match.

A really great song that uses all of dai’s usual instruments such as violin and piano. The beginning always reminds me of a game show for some reason. Also MICROSOFT SAM TOP TIER.


33.Rhythm of Red (The Seventh Seal)

Appeared in: VGMC2, ToC(lost to Dreams of the Shore)

One of the Mitsuda’s best is from some random nobody game. LOVE the acoustic guitar, percussion, and violin they just go so well with each other.


32.Main Theme 1 (Albert Odyssey Gaiden)

Appeared in: VGMC1, 4

One of the more ‘underrated’ songs in terms of VGMC performance. Another song with great instrumentation: uses the flute and violin for excellent calming soothiness.

Magical Dreamers is catchy and a very good mix between an electric guitar and an Indian vibe, but I wouldn't consider it outstanding.

Shadowlord's definitely used amazingly in the battle, which alternates between dialogue and action - the slow parts play during the dialogue, and fast parts play during the action.

the love mostly stems from Scars of Time, Dream of the Shore, Time of the Dreamwatch, and (for me) Star Stealing Girl and People Imprisoned by Destiny. Mostly the first two I mentioned though, at least on this board (both have won VGMCs).

31.Halo Theme Mjolnir Mix (Halo 2)

I like the Halo 1 theme quite a bit. But after hearing the Mjolnir Mix I can’t help but like it way more due to the added ELECTRIC GUITARS. Makes the song twice as awesome as it already it is.


30.Hope (Umineko no Naku Koro ni 1: Legend of the Golden Witch)

Appeared in: VGMC3, 4, ToC(lost to To Zanarkand)

The most (almost-)universally liked Umineko song for good reason. Beautiful yet simple describes this song perfectly… a great piano song that makes you think of all the good things in life.


29.Schala's Theme (Chrono Trigger)

Appeared in: VGMC1, 5

My current favorite Chrono Trigger song. An opposite of the happy Hope, Schala is one of the sadder songs in VGMusic history. While the main melody is quite cool I really think the background instruments really make the song.

Scars of Time is a good song by itself, but it's EXTREMELY overrated and not even remotely up to the level of Dreamwatch of Time in any possible way (in my humble opinion, of course xP). Dream of the Shore is a "hey, let's just relax and make something simple, nice and calming" kind of song (what I mean is that it is nice and calming, but not outstanding or extraordinary by any means). Star Stealing Girl is more or less the same, obviously leaning towards the "nice and relaxing" side, which is why I don't consider it particularly outstanding either. I've still yet to listen to People Imprisoned by Destiny, though.

"Schala's Theme" is terrific. It harbors a certain longing for Chrono in general. It makes me wish there were not two games but two hundred. Such a good universe.

Also, if there were a six-minute "Scars of Time" that managed to keep itself going quality-wise it'd be my favorite song of all time.

Well, after listening to People Imprisoned by Destiny all I can say is that it sounds like an emotional yet kind of bland violin orchestration (it still sounds nice, though).

But well, I guess I have to play the game to understand the context and to take an in-depth look to the rest of the OST.
