Intrigued by the creature you just saw, you briefly take out the Hunter's Libram and peruse its bestiary. Soon you come across an entry with a portrait of a creature that looks rather similar to the one you just saw.

"Shade

The shadow of a spellcaster, detached from its owner through dark sorcery. Cannot affect the world around it directly, but it can influence the actions of others and act as a channel for the spellcaster's magic. Shade hunters are advised to bring mirrors, as starting into its own reflection intently will permanently annihilate the Shade's ability to be more than a normal shadow."

A mirror would come in handy for dealing with that shade, but you don't have one on your person at the moment. You ask Nina if she can donate a mirror to the cause, but she shakes her head.

"The only one I've got is the one in my powder compact...do you think we'll be able to use it?" You shake your head in response. If the Shade is controlled by its master, it will never be stupid enough to stare at the tiny mirror on purpose. You remember that there are mirrors in the third floor's bathrooms you might be able to use, however. Big and unwieldy, but that would just increase the chances of being able to use it against the shade.

I don't like this plan. "Get the thing to stare into a mirror" seems like the kinda thing that doesn't work if you blow the element of surprise, and my mental image of Lluvia is not at all reflective. >_>

Best not to take any chances: you decide to inspect the third floor's bathrooms and see if you can take one of their mirrors with you to face the shade. You head for the stairs and tread down...

...Only to find that the passageway is completely blocked by vegetation two flights down. Damn, looks like you can't go through here, it's too thick to cut it down. Maybe one of the other stairways is open though. You could try your luck with them, though it's risky to tread around the floor given that the plant monsters are still on the prowl.

A) Free Choice [Ask Lluvia if she can make her surface mirrorlike]

You'll have to improvise, since the way is blocked. You turn to Lluvia to ask a favor of her, but she's already flushing all color out of her body, leaving only a faint translucence behind. She looks like an incredibly graceful glass figure now.

"Wow...she's pretty amazing. How did you get a hold of her?" Nina asks, amazed. Lluvia manages to look modest in spite of not having any discernible features beyond her eyes in response to that comment, somehow. Meanwhile, you lean closer to examine her...it's not perfect. You can vaguely see your figure reflected on her, but it's wobbly and not very clear. You wonder if it'll work, given you had to get pretty close to her.

A) Free Choice [Look for the Shade]

So armed with a living mirror, you decide to go and find the Shade, and communicate your intent to Nina, telling her to stay close to you. She nods.

"Right! Let's go take that spook down!" She says, bravely.


Returning to the junction where you met the shade, you see a trail of black goo left behind, which leads to a classroom at the far end. Opening the door cautiously, you find the shade inside, hovering in mid air, black liquid still seeping from it down to the floor. It has formed a sizable pool already.

The shade gives you a glare filled with so much hate and contempt something within you recoils in revulsion. It just isn't human to hate with such intensity. The depth of that hatred is so alien to you, being its target makes you feel a little sick. Suddenly, the liquid begins to shift and rise, as though it were a sleeping beast just waking up. It twists into letters across the floor.

"Child. You meddling, insufferable fool.", the liquid's message reads.

32) The shade seems to be engrossed in manipulating the liquid to communicate with you. Will you take advantage of its distraction to strike?

While the Shade continues to twist the liquid into new words, you see Lluvia surreptitiously move closer to it, inch by inch. The shade pays her no mind, however...

"You are such a pitiful creature. Aimless, nameless, with the power to change the world and not a clue about how to do it. Danger is drawn to you, and you are drawn to it. You bear many scars, but they can scarcely compare to the ones that are to come." It berates you, silent, otherworldly.

"And yet, you are the lynchpin of a grand plan. If it is to be unraveled, you must face the trials." The shade turns around, and snaps her fingers. She begins to vanish, and the black liquid forms a final sentence before settling down.

"So be it. Live, or die. It will make no difference in the end. One way or another, we shall meet again, in the Eternal Concrete Jungle. Farewell, foolish child."

You've barely finished reading the message when yet another spike pulverizes the floor...then another...then another, until there's barely enough ground to stand on. And from below...something rises. It is huge, as big as the room or perhaps even bigger than that. Dozens of cannons made of tree bark are pointed at you, and the flower that seems to function as its head scans the surroundings before settling on you.

"Oh god! How are we going to beat this thing?! It's too big!" Nina cries, frightened, though she remains by your side.

The gigantic plant thrashes wildly, then prepares itself to attack.

Empathic Link is tempting, but with Nina it's not -quite- as essential, and I'd rather try to knock out a pod before they can do anything.

For future reference, there is probably a really good combo (though not an official one) we can do if we ever need to focus. Nina has a damage reflection move that we could use to have her tank while we focus.

I'm good with dowolf's vote for the first attack.

You ready yourself to counterattack as soon as the flower makes its move, and motion at Nina and Lluvia to target a bulbous cannon growth to the flower's right.

"Got it! Just leave it to me!" Nina says. She takes a step forward, leaving her dangling perilously close to the edge of the ruined floor, and throws a dart with a forward motion, before spinning and throwing a second dart with a sideways shot. Both land unerringly on the gun-bulb, while simultaneously a shot of water from Lluvia connects with it, with a cracking sound. The gun-bulb shivers for a moment, and you hear the sound of a mechanism revving up. Somehow, you've got a bad feeling about it...
