He also got a suspended license, but I couldn't fit that into the topic title.

Who do you agree with here? The police officers or the man speeding to try and save his unborn child and wife?

It sounds bad until you realize the most probable alternate headline would be "Man kills family in high speed collision while trying to save his unborn child and wife"

Well, they report it as "lightly trafficked roads" of course that could be BS, but do you really think that a man is going to put his wife and unborn child in a dangerous situation like that? Also, the first Police Officer could've escorted the couple to the hospital or something if safety on the road was such a big issue.

The solution was clearly to give them a police escort, I'd think.

Instead of a 15 minute lecture. If anything the long lecture gave him more need to speed.

After a 15-minute delay, the Weber's were back on the road, but with a baby-gift of a $1,000 speeding ticket, and time running out.

No common sense at all here. The office could have still given him the ticket, but seriously, delaying him for 15 minutes should have gotten him fired.

Here's another ridiculous video I watched awhile back

"In what is described as an adrenaline-filled panic, Mr. Weber mashed the gas pedal of his Honda Civic, and began speeding towards the hospital on "lightly trafficked roads," the newspaper reported, at more than 105 MPH."

Considering he was panicing, yes.

They should've called for an ambulance, obviously. Speeding like that is quite dangerous. I would like to know what route they were taking or if they were on a highway. There's no mention of stop signs or red lights.

And the first time they got pulled over, the officer should have escorted them. He could have easily written them a ticket after he had gotten them to the hospital.

Seems rather irresponsible of them to be so far away from the hospital when she could give birth at any time (they were at 38 weeks for Pete's sake) and they knew there would be major medical issues.

People should become officers to help people, not for the power position.

Although, 105MPH is pretty ludicrous. He should have called the ambulance and had her in transport before a situation like this should have occurred. It's their fault for not having her at the hospital already when they knew something like this could happen.

What would you suggest they do in that situation? I mean, you live where you live, I'm not sure how they'd fix that, and probably no affordable way.

Agreed an ambulance seems like the right idea. I know that's really expensive in America, but I'm not sure if there's a charge for that in Canada with their system.

Yeah, this too.

Not to say they should be ready for every possible scenario, but if she's in mortal danger during childbirth and you're at 38 weeks, I think it would be time to put her in the hospital just in case.

Not that the cops were justified in delaying him twice, but the responsible thing to do would have been to get her in the hospital at a reasonable time BEFORE she started going into labor.

Like, long before.

Unlike most vehicles, ambulances tend to have the necessary means to keep people alive during transport, with professionals inside.

According to another new link I saw, the first officer actually offered them a police escort which they declined. Changes the situation quite a bit, I think.

105 MPH sounds fast, but believable to me. In fact, here's a Honda Civic going above that:

It would definitely have to be on a major road with no other cars. Most likely a freeway.

All that said, I would probably do the same thing if I didn't think an ambulance would arrive quickly enough. They are usually fast enough, but unfortunately, that's not always true. I know someone that died because an ambulance got lost, so I can definitely see how someone would not trust them. Still, I can't really say whether or not they did the right thing by driving over there, but I can say that it's ridiculous that they were not given an escort. It's even more ridiculous to lecture about speeding when there is a life or death situation. The ticket makes no sense, either, except to possibly discourage other people from trying the same thing.
