Finally got around to writing this up. It's more of a favorite anime series list than favorite anime list since a lot of the entries cover multiple seasons. Some of them are only one season of a series, though. Also, some of the entries contain spoilers for the listed series.
Well, let's begin.
10. K-ON series Initial airdate: April 2009 Started watching: April 2009 Favorite Character: Nakano Azusa
***Spoilers for K-on***
My list opens up with my favorite new series in the last few years. K-On is a entry in the cute girls doing cute things genre and it's one of the best in its class. K-On is about a group of 4, and later on 5, high school girls who form a Light Music Club. Although they form a band, it's more of an excuse to get these characters together since they spend most of their time slacking off rather than actually practicing. What I like about K-On is the atmosphere created by the interactions between the characters. I could feel how much fun the characters are having just from watching them goof off. I laugh at the silly things they do and it puts a smile on my face when they manage to succeed. By the end of the series I could feel a real emotional attachment with the characters and sympathize with how they feel after they perform their final high school concert and what they leave behind after graduation. From K-On also comes one of my favorite anime characters, Nakano Azusa. I actually didn't really like Azusa too much at first and found her constant nagging a bit annoying. However, after she started to become more accepting of the club's laid back attitude she really started to grow on me. She has a really cute character design and her reaction to the other characters screwing around or getting dragged into their antics is absolutely adorable. Taketatsu Ayana does a great job as Azusa's voice actress and it's really made me a fan of her voice work. This is the first Kyoto Animation work on the list and it's far from the last one.

That's why I combined multiple series under a single entry.
9. Lucky Star Initial airdate: April 2007 Started watching: April 2007 Favorite Character: Izumi Konata
***Spoilers for Lucky Star***
As great as K-On was, it wasnt even Kyoto Animations best high school slice of life comedy. Coming in 9th place is Lucky Star. Similar to K-On, Lucky Star focuses on the lives of several high school girls as they go through their life. The first thing that stands out about Lucky Star is its amazing opening sequence. I loved the opening dance sequence and song Kyoto Animation used for Lucky Star. What I also liked about Lucky Star was the style of humor it used. It was cool seeing all the anime and game references that were thrown around in the series. In particular they used a lot of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya references which is another anime series I really liked. Konata's Haruhi cosplay in one episode was a very cool surprise. I also like watching the cast of Lucky Star interact with each other. Every single character in the series had something to like about them. In particular, I really enjoyed Konata and Kagami's interactions and their clashes over what they consider normal. I liked Konata the most out of all the cast members because she's the one who drives the game and anime references and I could relate to her attitude regarding gaming. Kyoto Animation really needs to do a Lucky Star sequel some time.

8. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's Initial airdate: October 2005 Started watching: June 2007 Favorite Character: Fate Testarossa
***Spoilers for Nanoha***
Nanoha As comes in 8th for its likeable cast, interesting plot and awesome magical beam spam battles. Nanoha As follows Takamachi Nanoha and Fate Testarossa as they battle to track down and stop the antagonists from activating an ancient device that would cause an immense amount of destruction. I really love the characters in this series. Takamachi Nanoha, who is voiced by one of my absolute favorite voice actresses Tamura Yukari, is totally badass in battle as she tries to make friends with her opponents by beating them into submission. She never gives up and ignores all warnings regarding her personal safety to achieve her goals. Fate Testarossa has one my favorite anime character designs in both looks and personality. I'm a huge fan of quiet characters and Fate also looks awesome in battle. She is also voiced by another one of my favorite voice actresses, Mizuki Nana. I also really liked the antagonists in the series and their circumstances leading to their motivations for fighting were interesting. The several battles between the two forces throughout the series are absolutely amazing. At the end of the series, everything comes together for an awesome finale.

From: _Zea_ | Posted: 8/8/2011 1:00:10 AM | #016 TRE gives almost everything a 10 and with the way MAL compatibility works, I don't think it's possible to have a low one
I'm at 50% with him and our tastes are pretty similar!

By low I mean like lower than 50. I've seen ones below 20. They're pretty rare though.
anyway, I'll have to get th3l3fty to explain it fully but if someone has a mean score of 1 (aka HGR) and someone else has a mean score of 10 (aka TRE) then their compatibility will be 100% assuming they have enough shared anime
7. Shakugan no Shana Initial airdate: October 2005 Started watching: December 2005 Favorite Character: Shana
***Spoilers for Shakugan no Shana***
The first season of Shakugan no Shana is the 7th entry on my list. It's also the first series to not contain a former Japanese Anime Saimoe Tournament champion. Shakugan no Shana is one of the oldest entries on my Top 10 and was one of the first anime I watched when I really started to get into watching anime. It was the first anime I saw where Kugimiya Rie, another voice actress I really like, had a major role. Shakugan no Shana is a story about beings called Flame Hazes that fight monsters that consume existence. For people that have their existence consumed, Flame Hazes replace them with Torches which slowly fade away instead to preserve stability. In Shakugan no Shana, the Flame Haze Shana meets up with a special Torch Sakai Yuuji. I really liked this series right from the start. The world they presented was really interesting and drew me in. Despite her ultimately minor role in the series, I still remember and like Hirai Yukari and wish she might show up again some day. It's not very likely, though. The cast of Shakugan no Shana has a lot more weak links than the previous entries on my list but I really liked Sakai Yuuji and especially Shana. I liked Yuuji's personality and his ability to think up plans to help Shana defeat her opponents and how he tried to save Yukari. Shana would be the first Kugimiya Rie tsundere I've met and part of an archetype I absolutely love. Her trademark "Shut up, shut up, shut up" line when she gets flustered is absolutely adorable and so is her obsession with melon bread. It's too bad the second season isn't as good as the first season but I still have high hopes for season 3.

You mean in terms of original airdate? If so, hohoho, wow, our compatibility must be abyssmal. I think the newest series on my top ten (which to be fair would have me coming off sounding like LMS with how relatively little I've watched) is 2007 but before that it's 1999 or so.

Yep, I mean initial air date. I haven't really seen very much anime that aired before 2005. Also anime before 2005 I've seen is mostly limited to what was shown on TV in Canada.

Well with all this talk of the new animated Kenshin project in the works a lot of people are hoping that means either an FMA: B-style reboot or at least a proper straight-up continuation post-Kyoto.
Of course there's always a chance it's just another OVA. But hey, it'd be something.

Sounds like we're polar opposites in that regard. I can count on one hand the number of anime I've seen that started post-2005 so far.

6. Code Geass series Initial airdate: October 2006 Started watching: December 2006 Favorite Character: Lelouch Lamperouge
***Spoilers for Code Geass***
Lelouch pretty much carried Code Geass up to 6th place. This is the first series on the list that isn't normally considered a moe series. It may be a complete mess when you step back to look at it, but the constant random plot twists and the ridiculous plans Lelouch came up with made the series entertaining to watch through. It was interesting to watch the mecha battles where Lelouch was at a major disadvantage and manages to pull something off to completely turn the battle around. It was also cool to see how much Lelouch was able to achieve with the power of his Geass and work with the limitations it had. The constant cliffhangers kept me wondering what would happen next. In particular, I liked the phone call between Suzaku and Lelouch at the end of episode 23 and the events just after it. I also felt the end of Code Geass was really well done. It was an awesome sky battle followed by the Zero Requiem. Code Geass did have a bunch of characters that weren't particularly likable but Im actually one of the people who like Suzaku. I like characters with an idealistic view of the world and try to follow through on it. Code Geass doesn't really leave much room for a sequel but I wouldn't really mind to see more works with Lelouch in it.

I don't watch anime
Yeah, but you certainly play it. JRPGs -- even all the ones I really like -- are heavily steeped in the storytelling practices of anime with few exceptions.

Geass is pretty entertaining stuff. I think I'd like it more if I rewatched it and laughed at all of the stupid stuff as it happened. I take it you know about this?
No Lelouch probably means it won't be as good since he made the show a lot more than it would have been otherwise. Maybe the MC in this will just be a clone of him, they could just do what Gundam did to Char hell yeah.
Well, I guess I liked R2 a bit better but they are both pretty close together for me.
