Chapter 18: The Dread Isle

I give Oswin the Speedwings and then we're off to the next level. I get given Dart at this point, but I doubt I'll use him that much. He shares Merlinus duty with Oswin for most of this level.

Fog of war map, excellent! <.< Sain, Priscilla, Matthew and Raven go to the bridge to the north east, everyone else heads south, we start killing people who ride out of the fog at us. It gets a bit shirty for Lucius after she kills two guys in one enemy phase, but she survives the third and I bring her back from the fight to rest at a fort. Fiora shows up and depite being 8 levels behind Florina, has the same defence as her. That feels like Florina's being screwed in that area. I leave Raven on the north-east corner of the map to deal with the pirates that appear at sea and everyone else moves forward. Everyone meets at the bottom corner and pokes Uhai who has far too high an avoid. Before long though, he falls and we move on to the Chapter 19.

But first - oon sideqvest.

That guy on the pirate ship? I think he always has them. Definitely has them on HNM. I was part of a HNM Draft not too long ago and I distinctly recall him having them there.

Nomads are significantly better in rough terrain than most cavalry; Rath can cross 2 desert tiles per turn, just like normal infantry can. Since Living Legend is mostly enemy types that he's good against, he's not a terrible pick.

I just played Pirate Ship on HHM last night and the boss definitely has a Guiding Ring and not Speedwings

Yeah, in NM the Guiding Ring is a drop from some random mook instead. Just one of the little ways FE7 HM is creative in its malice.

Chapter 18x: Imprisoner of Magic

Everyone heads forward, Oswin stays with Merlinus and Florina flies back to help when the Pegasi attack. Before long someone teleports in that cancels magic, which makes the boss a literal nothing. Nothing here, is particularly hard, I get a Goddess Icon from the ruins.

I kill the boss easily and methodically kill Kishuna's bodyguards and then attack him, miss and he teleports away. Shucks.

Chapter 19: Dragon's Gate

Lowen and Matthew went to the closest building to the west, to kill the archer and plunder the chest. Oswin stayed back to protect Merlinus and everyone else charged. Raven crit killed the Knight in the chokepoint as we headed north and then Sain and Hector took the cavalry brigade including the (a) boss down. I bring Matthew up via rescue, because he has to steal stuff before the other thief.

I recruit the other thief "Legault" with Eliwood and then take the majority of my troops down south. Lyn and Canas head into the next treasure room, Canas taking out the mage in the grassy section beyond and Lyn using the Manni Katti to take out the knight. Everyone makes a big mess of the units down south and at this point ANOTHER thief appears to try and steal stuff from the chests to the east. However, after he steals from the first one, I wall him off with Matthew, Sain and Florina and Matthew steals his stuff one by one and then kills him. Boo yah.

The reinforcements that appear are dealt with by Oswin, Lucius and Lowe who were strategically placed by stairs in the event of them sprouting units, Oswin at the bottom left corner, Lowen in the central building and Lucius by the little square building where she lobbed spells over the wall. Eliwood heads into the south right building to take out the two archers who spawn there.

Hector and Sain kill the two knights up in the top corner and after bringing everyone back to the middle, I convince the boss to move to his Hand-Axe and take him down with Lyn. The three remaining units over to the left go down thanks to Canas and Hector with some light Priscilla support. Eliwood seizes and we win. Hurrah!

Yeah, Kishuna can be killed, but on Imprisoner of Magic you have to do it in one turn because as you saw, if you attack him even once and end the turn, he teleports away (he also may teleport away after a turn limit, but I forget if that's only on certain modes/difficulties). In Eliwood mode though, there's no real point to defeat Kishuna there except for bragging rights, and even then it can be a bit luck based given his HP and Avoid.

Chapter 20: New Resolve

Incredibly easy to summariz, Sain explores the small area north, Canas heads south west, Lowen heads south east and everyone else heads due east. Everyone meets up near the far edge of the map, with Matthew stealing trifles as he goes along, I pick up a bunch of items from different houses and villages and spend some time in the arena with some of my lower leveled guys, with Priscilla healing them every round so they don't die. I finally find the boss and he attacks Matthew who avoids everything for 3 turns, while chipping away at him while I play in the arena and then Matthew explodes and crit kills the boss.

Oh well.

Chapter 21: Kinship's Bond

I spread my strong units out and send Matthew south to grab the chests. I recruit Heath almost by accident, take out the Thief headed towards me and begin feeding kills to Heath because Dragon Riders are cool. Before long as reinforcements show up, I'm forced to rescue some Other Units before they started killing enemies. Florina hits level 20 and I promote her, and an archer very nearly immediately takes her out with a ballista. Lyn kills him though and I proceed through the chapter, merrily killing things. I get Heath to Lvl 10 as he kills the boss and Sain Hector and Lyn all hit 19.

FYI the next chapter has a kind of obscure gaiden requirement that isn't mentioned anywhere. You have to gain a total of 700 XP in chapter 22 between all of your units to unlock 22x.

Best way to do it is to bring Ninian and just have her dance a **** load.

Chapter 22: Living Legend

Desert map. Marvellous. I use a map for items, because seriously, **** that ****. I don't actually have a writeup for this chapter, but basically Pent was stealing all my experience so Florina rescued him and then Heath, Canas and Ninian went along the top of the screen, Matthew and Raven went south-west and Eliwood recruited Hawkeye. Oswin, Sain and Lowen deal with the mess in the middle that Pent didn't kill. This chapter took a while as I fed Heath kills and avoided standing in the bosses ranges, but eventually I got it. I talked to Pent, but he didn't recruit, so I assume he joins later.

Living Legend is an absolutely rage inducing mission on the hard modes. Hector Hard mode actually adds fog of war to the map, and Pent isn't strong enough to fend for himself anymore in that level and can actually die on the first turn sometimes.

Oh, it can apply to NM too, depending on luck. My first playthrough a certain NPC kept walking into range of the (main) boss and getting destroyed and I didn't know about how I could mess with RNs at the start of the battle so I kept basically repeating my actions and he kept on dying.

Certainly the most trouble I had with any FE7 map.

The best part about Living Legend is the requirement for Genesis. I mean, normally, I would entertain the notion that Pent being able to wreck the chapter was just one more dubious balance decision from Intelligent Systems. But the need to earn 700 EXP makes it clear that they knew exactly what they were doing.

And I think in one (both?) of the hard modes they move the stealable Guiding Ring to some random monk and then put him near Pent. So evil, and yet so crafty.

I don't know, it gets complicated. I can work out the odds that he'll die on the first enemy phase; there are three wyverns in range of him, they 3HKO and have about ~20% real accuracy, so there's about a .8% chance that all three will hit and Pent will die. This has happened to me, and I was greatly displeased, but it's not particularly likely.

After that? Well, I don't think he's going to get triple tag teamed again. But it's entirely plausible that he could take a hit, decide killing some trashy mage is a higher priority than chugging an Elixir, move to the wrong spot, and get mobbed by two wyverns who both hit and finish him off. The odds of two wyverns both hitting Pent are about 4%. The odds of the whole scenario happening? I've no idea.

Yeah, what a surprise the odds are quite different <_< Pent gets 3HKO'd by some enemies and is either immune or scratched by others, and faces minimal hit rates. Ch 28 dude gets 2HKO'd, some enemies double him, and I don't know the hit rates off the top of my head but it's probably a fair bit worse than what Pent deals with, especially because his AI is legendarily thick.

22x: Genesis
Not a very long write-up, but this chapter shocked the crap out of me when it split my force in two, but fortunately I had a nice mix of strong guys and guys I was training on each side of the wall. Once I rejoined the two, it wasn't that hard to just cycle through the map killing the enemies one by one, especially since I'd cleared out all the enemies in the central room initially with ranged weapons. Kishuna didn't even hang around to be attacked this time, disappearing as soon as I opened the door. Matthew explored all the chests in this area as he is want to do.

Genesis on HHM is the "worst" chapter I've ever experienced in a FE (which would be FE7 - 10). Sure, I could have handled it better, but oh man, things just weren't going my way there either.

As an aside, the enemy types that spawn in Kishuna's Room when he disappears depends on what you do. I believe if you open the door, physical attackers come in. If you cause Kishuna to leave by attacking him (which, on ENM is only possible with a Longbow) magic users spawn there. From a dropped item perspective, it's much better to have the physical units come. IIRC, they drop Silver Weapons while the magic users only drop the "second tier" magic tomes like Shine and Nosferatu.
