After 1985's publication of Crisis on Infinite Earths, a Tales of the Green Lantern Corps story was published that brought Scott even closer to the Corps' ranks, when it was revealed that Alan Scott was not the first human to bear a power ring. A Green Lantern named Yalan Gur, a resident of China, preceded him by several centuries. Not only had the Corps' now-familiar green, black and white uniform motif not yet been adopted, but Yalan Gur altered the basic red uniform to more closely resemble the style of clothing worn by his countrymen. Power ultimately corrupted this early Green Lantern, as he attempted to rule over mankind, which forced the Guardians to cause his ring to manifest a weakness to wood, the material from which most Earth weapons of the time were fashioned. This allowed the Chinese peasants to ultimately defeat their corrupted "champion." His ring and lantern were burned and it was during this process that the “intelligence” inhabiting the ring and the lantern, and linking them to the Guardians, was damaged. Over time, when it had occasion to manifest itself, this "intelligence" became known as the mystical 'Starheart' of fable.

Centuries later, it was explained, when Scott found the mystical lantern, it had no memory of its true origins, save a vague recollection of the uniform of its last master. This was the origin of Scott’s distinctive costume. Due to its damaged link to them, the Guardians presumed the ring and lantern to be lost in whatever cataclysm overcame their last owner of record. Thus Scott was never noticed by the Guardians and went on to carve a history of his own apart from that of the Corps, sporting a ring with an artificially induced weakness against anything made of wood. Honoring this separate history, the Guardians never moved to force Scott to relinquish the ring, formally join the Corps, or adopt its colors. A Silver Age cross-over story depicts Scott and Hal Jordan charging their rings at the same Power Battery while both reciting the "Brightest Day" oath. During the Rann-Thanagar War, it was revealed that Scott is an honorary member of the Corps.

Yep yep.

You know it was kinda nice when for like 2 months this year Alan Scott was the most powerful human in DC.

Then CRIPPLE LANTERN

And I don't want to do this alone, I'd like this to be a group Comics Topic effort. Not just so we can prevent each other from letting bias get in the way too much, but obviously I haven't read everything. For example, Resurrection Man. I've never read anything about the character, and have very little experience with Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, and I know for a fact that many people here are reading their Cosmic Marvel work right now. So yeah, hopefully most everyone will contribute. No rush obviously, we only need the first week of September and Justice League #1 at first, and there's still 3 weeks to go.

Alright guys, so I'm starting up this liitle project to get a super comprehensive guide to get people on B8 into comics via the digital New 52 releases. Basically it's going to be a topic series totally devoted to the discussion of the books and explaining exactly what's happening and how it works and what they may want to look into. They'll be a FAQ in the first post about the whole thing and then we follow it up with little guides talking about the new #1s. Basically, this is what it will look like.

Batman, written by Scott Snyder with art by Greg Capullo

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/new-52-batman/

Description: Batman as a character is one of the few title characters in the relaunch who does not need to be explained. The only question some of the more in-the-know interested parties should be asking is who's behind the mask. Dick Grayson's short but loved run as the Dark Knight has ended, and Bruce is once again the only man behind the cowl. But what everyone needs to be asking is, with 4 books staring Batman a month, 2-3 of which have him flying solo, why should I pick up this one? Simple.

The Creative Team: Scott Snyder is about as new as they come. It was only last year that he began writing his first series as a solo writer, playing second listing on a few Marvel books before that. This was, and still is American Vampire, an award-winning book that garnered no negative attention whatsoever, and is already seeing spinoff books from the same talent. It was critically acclaimed enough that DC decided to sign him on to DC proper book shortly after the start of American Vampire's run in Vertigo, another DC line. Near the tail end of last year, Scott Snyder started writing Detective comics, and continued on an 11 issue run that just ended a few weeks ago. It never outsold the Tony Daniel written and drawn Batman series, and compared to many runs on a Batman book was relatively short. Why all this backstory about a still freshly new writer?

Because Scott Snyder's 11-issue DTec run, known as "The Black Mirror", is already being heralded as one of, if not the best Batman story in history.

There is ZERO question about the quality of this series. It's really doing it no justice saying "well duh, it's Batman, gotta read Batman". No, even if someone hated Batman, this would still be a must have book. If one book in the relaunch had to be considered "the one to buy if you only buy one", it would very likely be this.

After all of that, it's almost just dull to talk about Greg Capullo on art duties. And that's not to say anything negative about him, he's a talented artist, and sure to do a great job if the released covers are any indication. He just doesn't garner the fanfare of the writer, and honestly, doesn't seem like a perfect fit. The extremely well written detective story that is "The Black Mirror" does not seem like it would line up all to well with "the second most famous Spawn artist". But Capullo's art is good enough and I'm sure it'll all work out in the end.

Ease of Entry:

Recommendation:

And that's the basic outline for it. They're not all going to be as long as this, there was just more to say here. Obviously can't fill in those last to categories for sure until the book comes out, and things can and may be changed at the last second. I think that ease of entry this is very important to note, since even a great comic to us may just be confusing to a newcomer, though hopefully it won't end up too much of an issue for most of these.

lol character limit. Continued.

That was similar to the Oral History interviews I was talking about.

In fact, I think he started doing this at the beginning of the issues right after they discontinued the text-only ones in the back.

But the ones you were talking about (the ones with pictures of their heads) weren't that good.

And I'm not text-wary either, I'm fine with reading a bunch of paragraphs if they're actually relevant to the story, like with Snyder. His run is god damn amazing, regardless of having lots of word bubbles, it's all for a reason though. It's not just to waste space or stretch out your narrative.

And people are that lazy, are you telling me that if he made a topic with a wall of text like that in the opening post, a bunch of people would read it? No, more likely they would click the topic, see the wall of text, and be like tl;dr.

This type of "analysis" is so biased and unreasonable it's ridiculous.

I get that you don't like Bendis but your hatred causes you to think that any extended dialogue/inner monologue is FOR NO REASON and that other writers all have perfect reasons.

That's because it's true and you don't seem to get it. You accuse me of being text-wary, so I once again have to explain that I don't mind text, I mind Bendis-speak.

Of course Bendis isn't the only offender, another example would be Tim McCann, who wrong Hawkeye and Mockingbird. It was boring, because his narrative was ridiculous, I read all of it, and I feel like it could have easily been shortened an entire issue, maybe two, but he filled it with a bunch of filler words and useless crap in order to extend it and make it longer than it needs to be.

There are writers that do that, believe it or not. And it's annoying. Especially when you catch characters talking in ways they're not supposed to, or dialogue that's completely unrealistic, like you would never hear a person talk that. These are examples, and valid ones, not just for Bendis though, I've seen a few writers do crap like this. Bendis is just the most prominent.

So, yeah, let's stop talking about Bendis, and get started with this ting (not actually tonight, but just lay some groundwork)

The ones I need help with most for week 1:

Detective comics. I stopped bothering with Tony Daniel long ago. I have my own opinions here, but I know there are people still following his Batman.

Hawk and Dove, I like Sterling Gates, but haven't read a ton of him. Pretty much just the lead in to War of the Supermen and Kid Flash Lost.

Men of War

Static Shock

Again, I'd like contribution on all, but these are the ones someone else more familiar with related works and the writers need to headline.

I think I'm the only one who does in this topic. I could easily be wrong. He's not a great writer, for sure, and his current run is... honestly pretty forgettable, as I don't remember much of it. I still follow it though because it's Batman, and he's not a HORRIBLE writer, he's just not great. He's decent at most.

Hey guys, just recently got into comics seriously (i. e. not just stray issues), so I figured now was as good a time as any to jump in after lurking the topics for a bit. Still busy hitting up the past highlights, so I've got a huuuuuuge backlog, but I'm also trying to keep up with current stuff so as to avoid constantly falling behind. Anyway, just wanted to say that LtM's idea seems really good on paper: for a comics newbie like me, it's a total godsend that helps me get oriented on which writers to keep an eye on, and also which series' to follow. Don't listen to Halo, who seems to be confusing "wordy" with "padded out": that's a wonderful way to hype a comic up in a way a newbie can easily understand. If nobody else is interested in pitching writeups in that'll be a pity, but I'd still like to read what LtM has to say about other books!

>“No, that’s Storm,” I said. “Here’s Banshee.”

>“Jim, don’t you know that banshees are female?”

>“Yes, but, you should take that up with Roy. He created this guy a long time ago.”

>“Roy?!” Stan had that look of horror and incredulity you get when you discover that the guy who’s been doing your taxes can’t add or subtract.

>“Roy doesn’t know banshees are female?!”

>“I guess he thought it didn’t matter.”

>Stan pointed at Wolverine. “This one, I guess, is Colossus.”

>“No, this one is Colossus,” I said, pointing. In Stan’s defense, each character was on his or her own board, they were all the same size and Wolverine’s claws were not extended.

>“But this guy looks like he’s made of metal.”

>“Yes, but, he’s big, and….”

>“Shouldn’t his name have something to do with metal?”

>“Um….”

>“Who’s this?”

>“Nightcrawler,” I said.

>“What does he do?”

>“A lot of things. He can climb walls like Spider-Man. He turns invisible in shadows. He’s strong and fast and agile. He has a prehensile tail…oh, and he can teleport short distances. With a puff of smoke that smells like sulfur. Bamf.”

>“A ‘nightcrawler’ is a worm,” Stan grumbled.

>He looked like he had a headache.

Penguin mini-series? They mini-series to anybody these days

And if that's true, where the f*** is my Electro mini-series? I've been reading an unhealthy amount of Spider-Man recently, and I learned that Electro is criminally underused, despite being awesome.

It will launch for $350 with some Wii Sports s***. I bet my life on it. Damn, that KoolAid guy is awesome - NGamer64

LtM, I like your idea about a topic series for getting people into the reboot, and I would love to help, but I am f***ing horrible with write-ups. I can give you moral and bump support though.

You dont have to so writeups, but, for example, you've been reading Nova, right? Just input on Abnett and Lanning would help.
