It's a social board I think, but all you guys do is play forum games and do forum surveys.
You guys have this Atlantis vibe, where no one even knows you are here (other boards don't even know what board 8 is) yet you guys are still a thriving community.
Atlantis meets cult, because you guys know each others' names and you act as if you are all part of a family.
Yet it has clique elements too because you guys compete to be the most popular and most liked user.
I have lurked here for about a year now. Posting occasionally. I even have the contest board bookmarked for Gamefaqs. It's my ONLY gamefaqs bookmark so every time I go on to post in other places on the site, I force myself to see what you guys are up to.
Almost like you guys are lab rats and I'm checking daily to observe you guys to see how my experiment is progressing.
I'm also pleased with the ace attorney love here, you guys have very refined tastes in gaming.
Anyways, back to the point:
This particular board is so strange to me that just making this topic makes me feel like this is some sort of off-topic disruptive posting.
It's a social board I think, but all you guys do is play forum games and do forum surveys.
No, that's not all we do. Pretty much anything goes here.
You guys have this Atlantis vibe, where no one even knows you are here (other boards don't even know what board 8 is) yet you guys are still a thriving community.
Not entirely true - PotD and Hellhole know who we are, at least.
Atlantis meets cult, because you guys know each others' names and you act as if you are all part of a family.
...what? I don't know the names of most of the people who post here and I don't act as if anyone here is my family.
But you're right about this being a peculiar board. It's one of the reasons I keep coming back to it after seven years!
this place is definitely weird. it's built upon some weird tenets (video game popularity, competition) and has to be utterly incomprehensible to an outsider. every year we get fewer new people because of this and as a result we get collectively older and more clique-ish. I'd be surprised if any regular on this board was under 16 whereas five years ago that was pretty normal.
I dunno, I like it here. have for years and years.

I don't even know why I still go here but I just do, sometimes I post stuff too.
also this topic made me realize how many contest topics we have. I honestly don't even know how I manage to avoid pretty much all of them , I guess the fact that a lot of them start with ~ or some symbol helps a lot.
Exactly, Yoblazer. Sometimes I think of how strange B8 is and it makes me shudder. I mean think about it - you, Yoblazer, got voted by hundreds of internet folks as the best user on this particular message board last year, in a contest that took months to complete.

Haha, I love how the first thing you say when someone says "I've been lurking on this board for a year now" is "rank us." I guess he knows us all too well !!
Heh, I find your descriptions of the board pretty accurate. I've been on this board for more years than I even know, yet I've never truly been on the "inside" of it, and watching the board I've pretty much had all the thoughts you summed up >_>
The users here just keep being interesting somehow.

Genesis maybe. I think Nio was already a lurker before she started posting here, and I have the feeling Ayuyu has been here longer.
And I don't at all think we're "cliquey" or "one big family." We have several cliques here, and a lot of users who don't associate themselves with any clique.
From: Gr8CyberMonkey | #017 One year? Psh. I've been lurking on this board for seven years.
I don't think you can be considered a lurker anymore, because I recognize you, as I'm sure a lot of us do. Which means you've become a regular user a.k.a. one of us.
As for the topic, I agree that this is a weird board, but that's what makes it awesome and why I continue to come back after so long. I enjoy that we're almost like a community, we even hate the other "countries" known as PotD and whatever else, and the only thing keeping us from war is those pesky moderators. I also like that I recognize almost everyone in this topic save for the lurkers that decided to post.

I don't even know what this board is, I just woke up one day and it was on my computer and I started posting and now I can't stop and my computer isn't even plugged in and it's weird
In other words, board 8 is haunted and evil
In other, less stupid words, it's a weird board with some decent people on it and I still have no clue what most of the past board 8 users/events people talk about are and I doubt I ever will

I think it is indeed the community feel that puts this board in a different position than the other boards. I mean, when you browse, say, CE or PotD, you rarely recognize the posters. It just seems like a random assortment of different posters, for the most part. Here (and I'll be the first to admit I'm one of the least recognizable, and newest "regulars" here), you see the same people starting and posting in threads all the time, and you can basically predict the general direction of a post just by looking at the user who posted it. That, along with the way this place gets around Contest season, just gives the place a unique, but good vibe.

Will not remove this line of my signature until the Seahawks, Jazz or Rockies win a title (Started 5-16-09) Yes, I know I'm never getting rid of this signature
Yeah, I assumed the topic creator was talking about real names when he said that we all "know each others' names." Just realized it's more likely he was talking about usernames >_>;
Still, I've seen other boards with regulars who all recognized each other. Perhaps it's less likely to happen with a "big" board like Board 8, where lots of people post? I don't know.
Also, I don't think people care about the B8/PotD rivalry anymore. That B8'ers get banned for "invading" PotD probably doesn't stimulate much confrontation >_>
From: SBell0105 | Posted: 8/13/2011 11:17:46 AM | #026 As this was the first board i ever came to and primarily the only board I frequent I find it weird that all other boards are not more like this one.

Who cares. This isn't dumb voters. People don't vote for brawl because omg link is one of a many playable characters. They vote because they like it- Sir Chris

Is what I meant by "those pesky moderators."

I thought that just a running joke more than outright hate?
It was always primarily a running joke, yeah. But back in '04 there were lots of B8'ers who genuinely thought B8 was funny, cool, dynamic and unique, while PotD was bland, boring and zzz. I still think this, actually!
It was pretty fun when it was an actual war, for like that two weeks. Then it just became the equivalent of invading a third world country and it was just sad. Then it got fun again when we got them to invade themselves.
