but it wasn't really a strategy guide

it was more like some dude just keeping a journal of his playthrough of the game, and it was really boring because he just overleveled his Charizard to hell and steamrolled everything. I think his next best Pokemon was like a Rhyhorn or something.

How weird.

the battles got less descriptive as it went on and it was boring towards the end

I bought it a store! It was in the strategy guide rack. I can't remember what store, though.

This book is actually the reason I bought Pokemon Red >_> Shame, because I actually knew stuff like the identity of the 8th gym leader + champion.

It was a playthrough of the game that also doubled as a guide, correct? My favourite bit was when he used his Rattata to beat Brock's Onix, and it levelled from 2 to 7. I was like "f*** yeah Onix!"

So I guess the point of that was if this is what you were all referring to?

I think there's something like that for Ocarina of Time. I should go and try to find it in my room...

The Nintendo guide was written like a third-person story iirc. It kind of confused me as a child.
