You guys acted like I insulted Neil Gaiman's Sandman or something. Hush is a terrible villain, made slightly-LESS-terrible in Heart of Hush, but still gets really f***ing stupid with the plastic surgery to look EXACTLY like Bruce Wayne and then LITERALLY cutting out Catwoman's heart, and then Bruce wants it back(Get it? ITS A METAPHOR DURR HURR). I liked Streets of Gotham until it became a love poem to terrible supervillians like Hush in the form of a Batman ongoing.

I await the day Joker comes by to sweep all these poor excuse for Batman rogues under the rug. They could call it "Clearing House" or "People Make The Best Firewood".

Heart of Hush was a bit heavy-handed at times, yeah. I can look past that if most of the character work in a book is compelling, which I felt Hush was. Nguyen's art was great in it, too.

I never read Streets of Gotham, though. Too many Dini Bat-Books.

Batwoman, written by JH Williams III and W. Haden Blackman, with art by JH Williams III

Description: Batwoman, Kate Kane, is a great female character, despite being a fairly recent one, and this is her chance in the spotlight. “Strong female character” can bring a lot of different connotations, not all of them good. In comics especially, female characters can fall victim to gender stereotypes or just not get treated with respect. Sometimes they look like they’re trying too hard to be strong or accepted. Not Batwoman. Batwoman succeeds in being interesting because she is a strong character who happens to be female instead of falling flat. That isn’t to say that her character isn’t strongly defined around her gender, because it is. But what I’m getting at is that, despite the similar motifs, Batwoman isn’t just a “Girl Power!” version of Batman, or Bruce Wayne with boobs, or Bruce’s girlfriend or anything like that (she’s actually a lesbian, fyi, and not closely connected to the Batfamily at all). She’s her own person with a completely separate backstory, cool personality, and interesting history. In summary, Kate Kane is her own person, likes to kick ass, and just happens to have lady parts.

The Creative Team: And this is the part that seals the deal. J.H. Williams III is a masterful artist. He has a unique art style that is just beautiful to look at. Even his panel shapes are dynamic and creative. And not just that, but he can change his style to suit different situations in the comic. His art for the Kate Kane segments of the story are grounded compared to the grit and flair of the style he uses when Kate is in costume. Action scenes are visually striking and brutal. When some more fantastic elements are involved, the art becomes downright surreal. Flashback sequences invoke a sense of nostalgia. And his spreads, holy crap. He’s so good, guys. Words don’t do him justice.

external image
external image
external image
external image
external image

I really can’t stress how hard it is for me to choose these. ALL of his pages are even better in-context, and in Elegy it’s beautiful to see his art mesh so perfectly with the story. Depending on who you ask, you’ll hear that William is THE best comics artist on an ongoing DC series, along with Francis Manapul.

As for the writing? Well. That’s another story. This is pretty much Manapul’s Flash #1 all over again. J.H. Williams III is an unknown in terms of writing ability. He hasn’t written anything, although he has worked on the character before, as an artist. And the other guy? The most I can find on him is that he’s involved in the Star Wars Extended Universe and has written some Star Wars comics. That’s a very different ball game than Batcomics! No one really has any clue what to expect, but Batwoman is a solid character with a lot of potential, so hopefully it’ll turn out for the best. And there’s always DAT ART.

2/2

Ease of Entry: Ah, but here’s the catch. You see, Batwoman made her debut in the DC comics crossover maxi-series “52.” 52 followed a year in the lives of lesser-known superheroes while the Big Three took a year’s vacation. There were many occasionally converging plotlines in that series, and the story of the new Batwoman was just one of them. Following that, Kate Kane got a story arc to herself in Detective Comics entitled “Batwoman: Elegy.” The success of that storyline led to an announcement of her own series, and an issue called “Batwoman #0” was released as a prelude. This was back in 2010. This very same Batwoman series has been planned in advance, most likely before DC even made the decision to relaunch everything at #1, and CERTAINLY before the writers had heard about it.

While I don’t think they’d go in explaining absolutely NOTHING about the character, it’s still somewhat likely that they plan on using Elegy as a base. If you’re interested, I highly recommend checking out Batwoman: Elegy. It’s got a great story, introduces a lot of core concepts of the character, and has amazing artwork as a bonus. The three follow up issues, Detective Comics 861-863, as well as Batwoman #0 are also good bets if you can find them. However, 52 is not as newbie-friendly (though not as confusing as other DC crossovers), and the Batwoman “origin” story is only a fraction of the overarching storyline. But I could NEVER recommend against reading it, as it’s one of the best books DC has produced. It’s your call there.

Recommendation: If you want a book with a strong female lead, or want to see how comics can excel as a visual medium, then this is the book for you. If you’re interested in Batman but not quite sold on the idea of a Batfamily, then Kate Kane could be the girl who could change your mind. And if you already like Batman and wanted to explore the rest of the cast of Gotham City? You were probably already sold on this by now! The writing is an unknown quantity, so you might have to wait and see how that turns out before you make a decision, but the art is guaranteed to be some of the best in the market. Unless the writing is offensively bad, the art and character will be able to carry the book. And if it just so happens to be on the same level as Elegy? Then we’re in for a treat.

I might have written too much, there. <_<

Just finished Batman 713. Neat story. I really enjoyed Nicieza's framing device. It may have been a simple history, but given the relaunch of DC comics, it puts Morrison and Snyder's runs on their respective books in perspective: these are two great ways to "end" Batman, and potentially provide a bridge to The Dark Knight Returns.

I was looking for a calendar in the comic shop today (I am going to hang it on the bulletin board in my classroom) but they didn't have any.

One of the guys who works there always tries to get me to buy DC comics but I'm like "noooo I can't afford to increase this habit."

He said he was going to bring his Marvel calendar from home tomorrow and let me have it if I promised to buy Action Comics #1 and Justice League #1.

I was also thinking about getting Flash #1 too but I'm curious, LtM, how is it not like at the top of the top tier for you?

I thought you loved Flash and FRANCIS MANAPUL is drawing it (and writing it apparently, is he a good writer?) so what is the problem?

For the first month digital and retail copies are the same price. In October, digital becomes $1 less. All comics are $2.99 retail, except:

Action Comics and Justice League, which will have extra content at first like concept art and interviews, and will go for $3.99 temporarily, then drop to $2.99 when they take that stuff out.

All-Star Western and Men of War, which have backups and will stay $3.99 retail
