You know, thinking on it now, I read a lot if image comics back in the 90's. I loved The Maxx and Spawn, had the first 15 issues of each. I remember reading Gen¹³, (Caitlin Fairchild is part of the reason I love redheads >_>) and there were some other books I read but don't recall off the top of my head. I also read X-men in those days, I loved X-Men, and Spiderman, I think I stopped reading shortly after Venom got his own series, which is weird because I liked Venom, and the Carnage issues of Spiderman were my favorite. I remember this one issue of Spiderman that had a silver cover, it was some anniversary issue, don't remember what year though. If my brother hasn't lost them I should still have all my copies.

Looking back at 09, it might be my favourite fiction period of that year. Well, that or Finch. It's just a wonderful story of unfulfilled ambition. The art is incredible. I don't know if many on B8 have read it. I recommended it to Pepsi, who loved it, and I pushed it on Cokes, who probably downloaded it and ignored it.

Amazing Spider-Man 400.

That was the issue that Aunt May died, fantastic issue.

Then it was retconned into being an actress hired by Norman Osborn.

I guess you could say that. It started the trend that Aunt May can't die, for some reason.

It's bull s***.

She needs to die, she literally has no point to her character anymore, she's even moving away from New York City. She's effectively dead now anyway!

You know, I will agree Nerd Rage is a powerful and usually pointless thing. But if you read a character and grow to like them, and maybe understand some of their motivations, principles and ideals, when something like OMD happens for apparently no f***ing reason (this is just what I gather from what I have heard, granted what I have heard is from nerd raging fans) it leaves a bad taste in your mouth and wells up the rage, that rage needs a target. In Spidermans case, in universe, that target is Aunt May. I will admit, I could be way off target here, but that's just how I see it.

Personally, I tend to not let nerd rage get to me, but that's not to say a comic can't make me feel. Case in point, Batgirl #24, I haven't read any Batgirl comics except that one, and the last few pages of that comic made me feel kind bad for Stephanie Brown. And WotGL Aftermath makes me want to kill the Guardians my self.

but his character arc felt pretty formulaic and predictable! stuck-up know-it-all hard-ass from the city goes to the countryside to learn about the simpler things in life etc.

maybe it's because of all the hype surrounding that book that when i read it, i was expecting some mind-blowing ideas

what i got was an old heartwarming tale of a man's transformation done with all the technical brilliance of one of comics' best storytellers

i appreciated all the complex techniques mazzucchelli employed with his art with all its layers but... it just didn't have that emotional resonance or, as i've said, "mind-blowing" aspect for me

it's not an intricate, complex story, no. if your biggest issue is that you didn't connect to it on an emotional level, that's fine. it's a personal story, and those don't click with everyone, even if the character goes through a universal crisis.

yeah, that's pretty much it

it's a great book and i'd give it a 9/10 in my completely arbitrary rating scale

it's even funny how there's sort of a connection with the "hole" right in the middle of the book and the ending with how i felt after reading it!

although it wasn't just mazzucchelli who worked on it, the comic book adaptation of city of glass had more of an effect on me!

Hawk and Dove, written by Sterling Gates with are by Rob Liefeld

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/new-52-hawk-and-dove/

Description: Hawk and Dove are the DCU avatars for the Lords of Chaos and Order respectively. Dove can fly and shoot beams of light, and attempts a non-violent approach to confrontation when possible, generating a calming aura. Hawk beats the **** out of people, and to nobody's surprise pisses people off consistently. The direction the book appears to be taking is to introduce avatars for other lords, essentially riding the coattails of the direction the Green Lantern franchise has been going the last 3/4 decade. They'll also be body guards for the president early on, so expect the heavy political spin of books past to shine itself.

Creative Team: Sterling Gates is a consistently above average writer who recently joined DC, making Supergirl interesting again for the first time in years. He has a lot of potential to become a big shot in the future but he's not quite there yet.

But he's not who we're going to talk about here.

Chances are you've heard of Rob Liefeld. Hell, there are people who know who Liefeld is who have never read a comic book before in their life. Most of the time he's referred to ad the worst artist the in the comic book industry. And he doesn't deserve it. Oh, he's bad. He's REAL bad. But he's not boring. It's rare that anyone would actually put down a Liefeld comic, in the way you can't stop watching a train crash. He has no sense of proportion, drawing people that are a dozen heads tall and mean with shoulders almost as wide as their height, women with hips wider than their legs are long, torsos that just SHOULD NOT DO THAT, and to this day the ability to draw FEET, his mortal enemy, still evades him. But he has improved, Hawk and Dove is looking to be his best work yet. This is saying very little, but you have to admit that this:

external image
external image
external image

is worse than this:

http://www.dubnerdesign.com/images/3donx.jpeg
http://www.dubnerdesign.com/images/cap.jpeg

Ease of Access: The characters of Hawk and Dove have a ridiculously convoluted past, switching between a male and female avatar for each lord over the years, but this will be sticking with their second, recently revived, most "popular" iteration, and doing so fro, scratch. It shouldn't be to hard to get into.

Recommendation: Nope. It's not because of the rookie writer, or the "art". It almost doesn't matter who's on the book. Hawk and Dove have never proven themselves to be interesting characters at all. This could change, so maybe check in on it after as while, but it's unlikely it's ever going to go anywhere spectacular. Save your money.
