Yeah, the PS3 has been outselling the 360 worldwide pretty regularly for a while now, but the 360 built a HUGE lead over the first 3 years in America. I think they were still doubling the PS3 in total sales as late as 2009.

Yeah I only got a 360 because by then all my friends already had them, so that makes sense.

I'm still happy with the decision so whatevs. It just surprises me that a video game system can survive with so little help from Japan. It just seems unthinkable.

The best part of the gaming industry moving west would probably have to be the lack of Final Fantasy games, those games suck FF7 & 8 being the greatest RPGs ever my ass they all blow.

This is really only slightly related, but I always see the 360 as the console of choice for manga characters. I think maybe because of Japan's strict copyright laws, it's easier to just use the 360 and avoid the hassle. Free advertising!

To be fair, Blue Dragon I didn't find very good, also wasn't into Lost Odyssey, etc. I don't think those hit either. Honestly, Tales of Vesperia is the only one, and that's not even exclusive over there.

That said, since I usually get both consoles lately and Nintendo's one eventually, and they all sell well enough somewhere, this doesn't really effect me, it's all good.

To be fair, the PS3's fortunes weren't the greatest either until recently, and even then it hasn't put up a big total. Japan this generation more than ever moved away from consoles toward portables -- DS and PSP stomped all three consoles combined. The Japanese market has also been declining for years now, making it a lot less important than it used to be. Right now, there are only a few big third-party Japanese games (Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy), and necessity has pretty much ensured that Microsoft will see those games on its systems. Microsoft used to think that success in Japan was key to seeing success everywhere, but with how Western developers have become so prevalent this generation it's no longer required to do well in Japan. Even without solid Japanese sales, the 360 shipped 1.7 million consoles versus the PS3's 1.8 million this past quarter.

I'm sure they'll keep trying to crack into the market, though. They sold three times the amount of consoles there this gen compared to last gen. They just have to have the right package from the get go -- the 360 launch everywhere was kinda bad all around, and it was plagued with the RROD stuff early on. If they have an appealing console design, some good games early, and improve their marketing strategy in Japan they'll do better next-gen than they did this one. The 360 has a pretty hardcore following in the country, and there are still a ton of Japanese games on the system, not even including those early RPG exclusives.

Japan is notoriously xenophobic, it was stupid of Microsoft to bother dumping that much money into that market when they were going to buy their own product no matter what from the start. That combined with the increasing prominence of handhelds over consoles made them pretty much irrelevant. Then again, they do ok in Europe although not as well as the PS3, and Europe hates America more than anyone.

It's amusing to see the 360 flounder late in the game like this when it is the only console that has been consistently improved with every revision, while Sony removes features near annually and Nintendo is now ending GameCube BC.

This is actually pretty awful because there should definitely be a distinction there...

Even so I think the Japanese have more pride than Americans. They're more likely to buy from one of their own where an American will readily buy something made in China, who is our enemy for all intents and purposes, if it's a dollar or two cheaper than a US made product. Of course the 360 also sells the best in America, but the PS3 and Wii are also enormously popular in the US.

Japan isn't against buying American, or European, products. Apple is seeing big success in Japan right now with the iPhone - and that was a market that was entirely dominated by Japanese companies just a few years ago. You just have to have the right product and the right marketing to appeal to Japanese buyers. It's hard to say that Microsoft did that as well as they could have this time around. The early launch of the 360 was plagued with a bunch of issues that stopped them from really just dominating this gen.

But you're completely right about the technical issues, the 360 wound up being the best console in the end IMO but you have to feel bad for anyone that bought one early. Hopefully MS can put out something more solid next time.

I'm not really seeing this, the PS3 and the 360 have very similar libraries except most cross platform games run better on the 360. There's no real -reason- why the 360 should do that badly, except the RRoD reputation making people swear it off before they finally redesigned it maybe. But MS fixed RRoD's for free here so I'd assume it shouldn't have been a huge problem in other regions either. This wasn't like when the PS2 was having mass DRE's and Sony refused to fix it until forced by a class action lawsuit. Microsoft and Nintendo generally take the high road and avoid that kind of thing. Thankfully since the 360 and the Wii were the less reliable systems this generation.

Microsoft made a bad first impression with the Xbox in Japan. It's hard to shake that off with consumers, unless you really hit it out of the park. The 360 was doing well when Microsoft was securing those RPG exclusives, but then it fell off once they stopped putting in the effort. It wasn't ever really lighting up charts, but it had a nice hardcore following. Japan went all in on the Wii early on (like everyone else), and then moved to the PS3 once the Slim released and Wii games became sparse. The lesson to be learned there is that you need a constant level of games for people to play and look forward to.

Xbox will never win in Japan, so probably best to stop trying to promote it there. Losing Idolmaster exclusivity was probably the final straw this gen since that was really its system seller in Japan.

no surprise here, japan doesn't like things that aren't cute and trendy and the xbox was a giant pile of ugly for most of its life. that's why the wii was outrageously successful in spite of not having good games and having a terrible controller, and why the PS3 didn't really take off until the slim released, the 360 S was too little and way way too late

Microsoft's response:

"Microsoft has responded to recent concern over the Xbox 360 in Japan, dismissing the suggestion it will pull out of the market."

“No, of course we're not pulling out,” Chris Lewis, Microsoft's European boss, told Eurogamer. “It's a challenging market. We are up against very strong competition there. All of our competition is strong. We're very respectful of what Sony and Nintendo do and where they've come from and what they bring."

“Japan remains important to us. We're very committed to that market. The development community there is very important. Tokyo Game Show will be a notable element in the year as usual.”
