"But still, Aniki. The amount of money that Father raised required a suitable quantity of collateral." Rudolf used large words, trying to counter his brother's hurtful childishness with cool professionalism. Rudolf wouldn't stoop to his brother's level.

Krauss scowled, his brother not backing down. "It was just an illusion of money created by our penniless father." He tried to sound intelligent again, while ignoring all the evidence his siblings had put together. "He made it seem that non-existent gold actually existed and fooled his sponsors. It was probably the gamble of a lifetime. " Krauss scanned the faces in the room, looking to see if anyone was buying it. "...Fortunately his use of those funds proved successful. If the Korean war demands hadn't come and the Ushiromiya family had not been restored, Father would probably have been hounded after as the crook of the century."

"I may not be a big time, city slicker lawyer," Hideyoshi piped in, "but it sounds like you're saying the gold never existed, and that Father made it all up."

"Of course." Krauss smirked confidently, and twirled his imaginary mustache even more confidently. "Therefore, after he was sufficiently successful, the illusion of the gold became inconvenient. So Father made up that absurd story about the witch and black magic and made the whole thing seem less believable." His smirk grew to a grin, and he took on a patronizing tone. "In other words, he revealed that the illusion of gold was fabricated. If he says that he received the gold from a witch, no one would believe that it exists at all, right?" Krauss' voice somehow took on an even more smug tone. "He probably did it for all of your sakes. Nevertheless, some stupid offspring wanting to divide up this non-existent gold with the rest of the inheritance have appeared." At this point, Krauss had even convinced himself. He stopped talking momentarily, silently stroking his mustache and appreciating how persuasive he believed himself to be. "......Rosa, don't tell me that even you believe this kind of a fabrication...?" He flinched as he realized how he had misspoke. Adding "kind of a" was a linguistic mistake.

Rosa, noticing it herself, tried to hold back a smirk. Her brother never was the best speaker. "............... I can't prove whether or not Father really has the gold." Rosa pulled her composure together and continued on, trying to sound assertive. "However, as one of Father's four children, I just want to claim my rightful share." Rosa's high-pitched, squeaky voice made it difficult for her older brothers and sister to take her seriously, and it only got worse when she tried to sound angry. Tears welled in her eyes as her siblings broke out in hysterical laughter. Even Hideyoshi couldn't contain himself.

"Ho..." Krauss's laughter died off first. "It looks like even Rosa's starting to say it." A second bout of laughter started up, quieter than the first. Rosa stared at them all with hate burning in her eyes behind a stream of tears. Krauss, again the first to contain himself, started to speak again. "All right, maybe this is what you all want to say: that I am trying to keep all of the gold to myself..." Krauss was through playing around with his baby brother and sisters.

"Ohohoho," cackled Eva. "Nissan, the fact is that you've obtained a massive amount of funding." Kyrie, the only one unfamiliar with Eva's speech patterns, gave a quizzical look. Unknown to her, Eva was a very big fan of cars. She would occasionally refer to people as car companies when annoyed with them. It was an odd verbal tic, almost her way of saying she'd rather be indulging her hobby than dealing with the object of her annoyance. "If we rule out the possibility that you have been embezzling Father's personal funds, then there's only one possibility left, right?"

"Aniki, maybe you've already found the 10 tons of gold bars. It sure looks that way to us." Rudolf unconsciously began stroking the area above his own lip, imagining a thick, glorious mustache. Upon realizing what he was doing, he quickly pulled his finger away.

Krauss grimaced. No way would his little brother upstage him like that. "Ridiculous." He began stroking his imaginary mustache furiously, pinching his fingers together in long strokes away from his face. "Something like that never existed in the first place."

"Ohohoho!" Eva laughed a wicked laugh. "Then explain yourself. Embezzlement of Father's assets or Father's hidden gold. How could you have gathered so much funding if you didn't use one of these?"

"... The tooth fairy?" Kruass grinned.

"You shut your fat-!" Rudolf restrained himself while his brother focused his smile at him. "Answer the question, Aniki."

Krauss put on a serious face. He briefly considered various possibilities in his head. He won it in the lottery? He sold his mint copy of Stadium Events? He found it laying on the ground? No, they would have heard about things like that. "I also have many friends in the business world and the financial world. I have done nothing more than gain their assistance." Krauss decided to go simple. "...... And as for that, I have no responsibility to explain it to you. You understand, don't you? There are some topics that can't be talked about."

Eva, herself familiar with the things one sometimes has to do for money, looked knowingly at her brother and planned to let it go, but Rudolf, perhaps still hurt by his brother's endless taunting, remained skeptical.

"...... If you insist on it, that's all right. But Aniki, Father doesn't have long. Nobody can ensure that he will live to see this day next year." Everyone in the room smiled and nodded enthusiastically. Rudolf waited to get to his point. "When Father dies, the inheritance will be passed on. We will all set up impartial lawyers and accountants to inspect Father's financial and political status."

"Ohohoho!" Rudolf was again interrupted by his sister's obnoxious laugh. He was just about ready to snap at her and demand she let him speak, but when he turned to her, he was greeted by an evil, snake-like face. Rudolf immediately backed away carefully and left the rest to his sister. Krauss silently wished he could be so lukcy. "If, at that time, the fact that our brother has unjustly interfered with Father's money comes to light..." Eva grabbed her husband Hideyoshi by the crotch, causing him to shriek in pain. She tightened her grip, and his shriek began to sound more feminine. Finally she let go and he dropped to his knees, cupping the are around his genitals, nearly in tears. Krauss looked on in horror at the demonstration. "...... you understand, right?" Eva's smile never left her lips, and she continued to stare at her brother like a cobra ready to kill.

By this point, Krauss was sweating profusely and struggling to get his words out. His mouth was dry, and his lips trembled. After many failed attempts, he finally spoke. "I don't have a clue what you're talking about." He smiled nervously. "You're starting to make me feel as indignant as my wife was." Krauss began to laugh, and looked around for anyone else to join him. Not getting the reaction he hoped for, he quickly quieted himself.

Hideyoshi was now pulling himself off the ground, a little blue in the face. "... Father's gold... I say, Father's gold is definitely one of Father's assets!" He steadied himself as he was back on two feet, and the men in the room looked at him with pity.

"Perhaps you should worry about your own assets first," is what Krauss wanted to say, but Eva continued to stare holes through him.

A brief silence filled the room as the men watched Hideyoshi carefully lower himself into a seat. Eventually Rudolf broke the silence.

"In short, even though you are our brother, we will have your financial situation investigated to determine whether or not you are hoarding the gold." Rudolf smiled victoriously, feeling he had finally beaten his older brother.

Eva's face had cooled, and a much more gentle, playful smile sat on her lips. "Isn't this a good opportunity. Prove the existence of this backup from friends and acquaintances that you mentioned." Although it passed right over his head, Krauss' siblings noticed that Eva was intentionally speaking awkward English, teasing their brother. "That way we can sportingly apologize for foolishly doubting you. Right, Rosa?"

Rosa looked at her sister with resent, knowing she was just trying to goad her into making a fool of herself again. "...... That's right." Rosa started hesitantly but quickly became assertive. "Krauss Nissan," Rosa imitated her sister out of spite, "you are the one who's avoiding the topic! If you were guiltless, you could just prove that you were in the right. Yet you aren't even trying to respond!" She had poured her heart into her words. After a moment of silence, the room erupted into laughter. Even Hideyoshi, sitting uncomfortably in his chair, chuckled hoarsely. Tears again formed in Rosa's eyes. She would have her revenge. One day.

The laughter died down, and Rudolf decided to speak first, hoping to reestablish the serious tone. "However, Aniki, we still have to consider your position here. As Father's representative, you're probably bearing a larger share of the burden than we are." Rudolf took a patronizing tone, something he had been waiting to do towards his brother his entire life. "It wouldn't be fair for the rest of us, who have been living terribly relaxed lives until now, were to complain without taking that into account."

"I couldn't very well leave that burden to my little siblings who still believe Santa's the one getting them presents every Christmas, could I? That's been me all this time, by the way." Krauss replied flatly. "Please get to the point."

Rudolf looked crushed, but before he had the chance to speak, Hideyoshi stood up and started. "I'm not some fancy, New York City lawyer...... but randomly, I say, randomly investigating nit-picky aspects of Father's wealth seems a fairly inefficient way to do it." Hideyoshi stood next to his wife tentatively, and tried to capture some of intimidating aura for himself. "As you said, I say, as you said, Krauss Nissan, there may also be movements of money that are difficult to explain." Trying to break the uncomfortable tension, he added. "Every man spends a little money on something he wouldn't want his wife to know about, right?" Krauss didn't react. "That's a joke, I say, that's a joke, son."

"Get to the point, honey." Eva drove her elbow into her husband's gut, only hard enough to speed him along.

"W-We've come to consult, I say, we've come to consult with you," Hideyoshi sputtered. "... A mutually beneficial, I say, a mutually beneficial consultation."

"Consultation?" Krauss smiled, intrigued. He looked coldly at his brother, Rudolf. "Ho," he laughed.

Rudolf gave his brother a wicked look. "You're lying, damn it. I know it." He muttered under his breath.

Next time on Umineko:
-A brother's hopes and dreams continue to snap.
-A devious plan is revealed.
-Krauss's limitless creativity pays off.
-Lots of laughing.

But RIGHT NOW, MORE THAN ANYTHING, I REALLY WANT TO GET TO SLEEP.

Well

It's the part I've liked the most.

It is infinitely more entertaining than anything to do with Battler and the cousins so far.

But it's still sort of dull up until the part right after I've written up to. Which I've played, but am too exhausted to turn into anything silly.

The version number is the translation version. 4.4 is the latest. You may want to update, but your saves will probably not work with the new version.

I recommend just waiting until you unlock EP2 normally, then update and restore your progress by unlocking it manually in the main menu.

If you really want to update asap, update, then "unlock" EP2 at the main menu and start EP1 again, you'll be given an option to skip to whatever chapter you like. Pick the chapter you were in, then use ctrl to skip the rest of the way back to where you were (if you don't know what chapter you were in, post here and someone will tell you)

If you do end up unlocking EP2 manually before you unlock it normally, make sure to read the bonus "Tea Party" and "????", in that order, after finishing EP1 and before starting EP2. Normally you must read these before unlocking EP2, but unlocking it manually bypasses this.

As for what changed in the two updates from 4.2 to 4.4, IIRC both were general updates to the EP1-4 translation, with the benefit of hindsight from EP5/6/7. I'd imagine they contain things like making hints more (or less) obvious to match the difficulty to the original text, clarifying translations of certain sensitive lines, stuff like that.

That leads me to my second question.

How do I update?

Do I just download the patch off that one site that seems to be the homepage for the translation project, and, uh, place it in the folder?

Huh, apparenty I didn't have the newest version either. I just deleted the folder for 4.2 before running the exe for 4.4. My saves were still there but they crashed the game if I tried to load (I could write over them and load just fine). Luckily I was only about 10 minutes of CTRL-ing into ep3.

Delete the current patch folder "[WH] Umineko English" and extract the new patch folder (same name) to the same location. Make sure you download the installer-free version:
