Because I'm about to be utterly destroyed by a hurricane, and I always wanted to go out with a joke.

WARNING: This topic will contain spoilers. Obviously. I mean Jesus, it's a playthrough topic; this should be a given.

When I last left off, somewhere around half a year ago, I had just waded through hours of text and made it to the point where uh... well ****. I think gramps kicked his doctor out of his room and was yelling at his son? And Battler was giving painstaking details on the order everyone sits at the table in. Also he has a stupid name.

Basically I hadn't gotten anywhere in spite of reading for a few hours straight.

Let's see how it goes this time!

I'm not, but...

I was expecting hours and hours of text that didn't leave me feeling empty. All this exposition leaves me severely wanting for something to happen in the present, and a lot of this text could really be cut. I swear, that guy at the plane way back at the beginning talked about talking about getting on the plane longer than he actually talked about getting on the plane.

Well, I haven't even heard the word twilight yet, so I guess I'm not at the "good" part.

Also I thought I had deleted it for a second, but now I found it and I can get this thing started. I've got about 36 hours until the flood waters uproot the true parallel to my house and crush me, so let's get this show on the road.

The sound of the ocean waters on the title screen do not soothe me given the circumstances.

"I'm already convinced by the sashimi salad!" My save file drops me waist deep in text that means absolutely nothing to me. "Plus these fish were caught in the adjacent seas, weren't they?!" What.

All I really remember is that Gohda is a jerk, but is not the weird spider boss from the first dungeon in Ocarina of Time. Also that Battler has an unhealthy obsession with the women in his family.

"Hahaha. Depending on the situation with my job, I also have eaten at many odd places, but compared to all of those, this is an excellent dish." This is seriously worse than I remember. Am I close to this twilight thing?

"With such magnificent food distributed in front of everybody, it was time for the chef to extol the virtues of his creation." How does a translator know the word extol, but have such a loose grasp on conversational English?

Maria's constant "Uu~"ing is bothering me. I've never met a kid who "Uu~"s that much.

"Just like with medicine, reading the instructions seems to work better than just drinking it." What? "Seriously, should you call him subtle or just talented?" Pretty sure those are two different adjectives entirely.

Given the Law of Conservation of Detail, this pudding dessert is going to be incredibly important later on in the story judging by how much time was devoted to describing it. It has also given me a serious craving for pudding. I'd better have some left.

I just noticed, but does that orange haired lady have a tattoo on her left arm?

That old lady is, like, the only character that I don't hate right now. Hahahaha, mackerel sake. Priceless.

Pudding break.

I don't know more than a handful of Japanese honorifics, and I only have a loose grasp on those, so this is hard to follow. What is "oba-san"? Is it important at all that I understand this?

I hate the shattered glass effect whenever you load a save file. I can't even leave the menu without thinking I'm under attack.

"Uu-!" Maria speaks more like a caveman than a child.

Come to think of it I don't know Japanese honorifics at all. What are "-kun" and "-chan"? I sure wouldn't want to miss any of the rich substance it adds to the text! *_*

Ahem.

Hideyoshi's dialect is easier to stomach if I read it in my head in King Dedede's voice from Kirby Right Back At Ya.

"move on to a more intellectual discussion?" I don't think you're capable!

"My, my. I wish I could wrap those words up and send them to this room a few decades ago. Right, Rosa?" What the god damn hell is she trying to say? Forget offending her brother or sister, in what possible way could Rosa respond to that at all? "No sis, I disagree. You don't want to wrap those words up and send them to this room a few decades ago. You don't want to wrap those words up and send them to this room a few decades ago at all!"

Well things seem like they're about to get interesting. But then, if I had a quarter for every time I've been wrong about that with this game by now, I'd have a good amount of pocket change.

"......... Kyrie, sorry, but please stay quiet for a while." Why isn't she allowed to speak? All the other in-laws are. God I'd hate being a part of this family.

I was trying to figure out who exactly Natsuhi is in relation to everyone else is, and I found that character tree thing in the menu. Does Rosa not know who knocked her up, or is it just the rest of the family who doesn't know? Or just Battler?

Delsney Land? Really?

I'm actually enjoying all this conflict regarding inheritance, but Umineko was marketed to me as a game about witches or something.

Ohhh, so Eva's tattoo is the One-Winged Angel.

Ouch. "Borrowed womb." That's a new one. Harsh.

Well, they just broke a window again, and it looks like things are about to get a lot less interesting, so I guess this is as good a spot to call it a night as any.

Aunt, I think? Or sister?

But yeah, honorifics aren't that big a deal. It's just Japanese formality.

I'm pretty sure some of the notes in the first episode deals with honorifics though.

Oba-san is aunt or 'middle aged lady'

-kun is for a male child or teenager.

-chan is for something cute or endearing. Hence, it's used for girls a lot, specifically children or teenagers. But it can apply to things like animals as well.

They can also be used for the opposite sex but generally this is seen as condescending toward them (like calling a female 'manish' or a male 'girly'), or at best a playful joke toward them.

It's not REALLY important, but it helps to know so you're not going "I have no idea what that means" every time you read one.

The inheritance conflict IMO actually is the start of it getting good, so there's still hope.

And yes, we know the wording is really awkward.

"My, my. I wish I could wrap those words up and send them to this room a few decades ago. Right, Rosa?" What the god damn hell is she trying to say?

As for this, though, I think the meaning is fairly apparent: 'That would have been nice if you had said it when it actually mattered' or something like that.

I didn't remember the context of the line, so I just loaded up my save that was right around that point.

"It seems that your sarcasm is poorly timed. Just as it used to be." So "I wish you had told my sarcasm is poorly timed years ago. Right, Rosa?" That still doesn't really make sense to me. For one, I'm not even sure what about her sarcasm was poorly timed. Or for that matter, what about it was sarcasm, since she actually did want to move to a more serious conversation. I also still don't get how Rosa's supposed to reply. "No, he shouldn't have told you?" It's just an all around odd line to me.

Episode 1 and 2's translation definitely needs some major work. It gets better as it goes, mostly because Episode 1 and 2 had a different translator than Episode 3 on.

After Episode 8 and possibly the fan disk that's supposed to come out in December are translated we're going to be releasing an updated patch for Episodes 1-4, I think, that retranslates and edits parts of them. Already have a pretty sizable list of changes. Unfortunately it's not a very big priority and frankly it's not THAT big of a deal, so it probably will be quite awhile before it happens, especially considering the amount of time it will take.

EDIT: If it wasn't clear, I'm an editor on the project <.<

No, I didn't edit the early Episodes, I started with 6.

This mostly stems from translators being unwilling to rewrite lines at all.

I really think if you're gonna take the time to translate from one language to another, you should be willing to rewrite lines so it actually sounds right in the language you're translating it to. Anytime I've had to translate anything, that's how I've done it.

I mean Orson Welles would completely lose it if he was hired to voice a character in this first chapter of Umineko.

Sure. I suspect the real problem is that most people only care about getting the story out quickly, in a flawed but readable manner, so the VN translators prioritize speed. And then once they're finally finished, they're tired of the whole thing and never go back.
