Why 35?

I started by just throwing down the first games I could think of that were f***ing awesome onto a list, and came out with 29. Then I discovered a few older ones I had missed, so I ended up with 36. I trimmed one (Sonic Adventure 2), to land up with 35. Just because it's a nicer, more round number.

35. Burnout 3

I'm not a huge fan of racing games on the whole, and I certainly don't have much time for the more realistic ones like GT and the Formula 1 games. But Burnout 3 is simply the pinnacle of the genre for me. The chaos you could cause with a single takedown was brilliant, the controls were simple and satisfying, there's just nothing to really dislike here. I was never really compelled to finish the single-player mode, though, and I think that's something of a strike against it. Generally, though, awesome.

34. Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations

Phoenix Wright is the only B8 fad I really bought into. I did buy Me+My Katamari on the PSP, and that was pretty fun, but really Phoenix Wright is one of the only times a B8 fad has gotten me into a series.

And I was not disappointed. Sometimes it's a bit melodramatic and it feels a bit...contrived, I guess? But that's pretty rare. On the whole, the story is incredibly fun and figuring things out for yourself is very satisfying. The characters here are probably the best. Edgeworth's cameo is great, playing as him is even better, and Godot is a cracking antagonist (that theme) - what's more, Dahlia is arguably better. So deliciously evil. It has the best overarching story of the trilogy as well, I think.

I remember playing the first case and when Grossberg returns with the information and you begin to expose Dahlia and saying "holy s***, this is the FIRST CASE". Unlike Apollo Justice, though, this game delivered what the third game promised (not that I hated Apollo Justice all that much, mind you!).

33. Shadow of the Colossus

This game is so divisive. Personally, I think it has its issues (yes, those controls are not that good), but on the whole I think this game is both beautiful and in some ways unique. I don't think it's this grand settler of the "are VGs art?" debate like some people think it is (simply because I think VGs are an art form, and that good games are simply good art in the way good movies are good art). SotC is art, but then so is Kane and Lynch 2.

I love most of the bosses. 13 is my favourite, though it's close with 5. Figuring out ways to beat them is great fun, and the music direction when you make your progress is great. 5 has that great music change when you finally get on the back of 5. Very good. 12 is the only one I really don't have much time for. Favourite song in the game would be the one when you battle 16. That whole battle in general is quality, tbh.

Not going to bother with a ranking. Wouldn't know where to put the ones in the middle, and ranking this list was a pain in itself.

32. Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation

Limiting the game merely to Egypt was a bit of a shame, I thought. Tomb Raider is at its best when it globetrots. That said, TLR is great fun and does a lot of things so well, delivering better from a story perspective than any of its predecessors. I like Von Croy a lot. Then there's the new gameplay elements and the cool weapon selection. I think the game drags a bit in the Cairo levels, but the Citadel onwards and the pyramids are great fun. It's also a massive game, especially compared to the original Tomb Raider. I think it has twice as many levels as the first game in the series. Fun fun fun.

31. Pro Evolution Soccer (X)

The X is because this ranking is really for the entire series. There are minor updates with each new iteration, but it's mostly a very similar game style-wise. This is still the best football/soccer sim on the market, even without the licenses FIFA has. It's not too focussed on realism but more about making it as fun as possible, and that really works. I've logged so many hours on Master League, and the addition of Become A Legend in 2009 was awesome. I got to retirement age on that, winning everything. Great series.

30. EarthBound

Really, I thought this would be higher. Last few years EB has been in my top 10, but I haven't really put any effort into putting a list together recently. When I actually focussed on it, it's down here at 30.

With the exception of Pokemon, EB is the only JRPG that I think is remotely worth a damn of the ones I've played. It's funny, the battle system is good without being irritating, the battles aren't random. Giygas is a very foreboding bad guy and the final battle with him is one of the creepiest, most atmospheric boss battles.

Just an all-round great game.

29. Rayman 2

SO GOOD

I love Rayman. I love how he has no legs or arms, I love the cartoonish humour about it, I love it. I don't think there's that many series that have handled the 2d to 3d transition as well as Rayman has...1 was good, 2 was great. Varied worlds, good boss battles. Great new gameplay elements. Revolution on the PS2 was a really good enhanced version, as well. I recommend it! Play this series now. Even Rayman 3 is worth a look (and I am HYPED) for Origins!

28. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Surprised by how low this ended up being. I just like SA so much more, I guess...anyway, this game blew me away when I first played it. The stuff on offer to you is great and the characters are entertaining. I love slowly taking over Vice City. It's very Scarface-esque and I love that whole idea.

Then you have the classic GTA gameplay, which did the original sandbox idea so well. It took 3 and expanded on it HUGELY, more than could be expected. I also think the variety of the missions is to be praised, especially when you get to later in the game and you have the various businesses that need missions doing for them.

27. Half-Life 2

Honestly, this is probably the best FPS ever from an "objective" point of view - and when you add on the episodes, especially the awesome Episode 2, you get what is more or less the complete FPS. The levels are of a perfect length so you never really get bored of any one thing and there are some awesome settings. Ravenholm, Nova Prospekt, just great levels. I guess my criticism with this game is that I appreciated it hugely without ever falling in love with it. If I took my intangible feelings out of it, this game would be a LOT higher.

26. Spyro: Year of the Dragon

Skateboarding. F***ing YES. I spent so many hours skateboarding on this game, mastering the course and clocking as high a score as I could. It was a surprisingly well put-together minigame, and really it sets the scene for the rest of the game because the side-quests and mini-levels are all fun to varying degrees. Even the Sparx levels were a good distraction, and I LOVED the final world, the "super bonus level". I didn't think anything would top Gnasty's Loot from the first game (man that level is awesome), but this one did. It manages to take some of the best elements of the game so far and soup them up into one awesome mega-level. Really good stuff.

25. God of War

RAWR LOTS OF STUFF WILL DIE RAWR ARES DAMN YOU ARES AGUGGHUGHUGHUGHUGHUGH

</game in 10 seconds>

and it's AWESOME.

Seriously, blood flying everywhere, body parts flying everywhere, a very original anti-hero protagonist, a GREAT setting (I love Greek myth), and some of the most satisfying gameplay around. God of War allowed me to string together amazing-looking combos with minimal button-pressing input, and I think that's just great. The Blades of Chaos were such a good idea, they allow for really smooth and exhilirating combat. God of War would ultimately be outclassed by its sequel, but for giving me such an exhilirating ride, I have to give it its props.

24. Tomb Raider

Yes, I know I said TR4 was double the length, but Tomb Raider's sense of isolation and the cave exploration and stuff blew me away when I was a kid. Legitimately one of the first games I've played and said "wow, I did not know games could be this good" when I was little. There are one or two that have elicited such a response from me since, and you will see them higher up the list. But Tomb Raider (and its remake) are what started it all, and they hold a special place for me because of that.

23. Time Crisis 3

So much money spent on this at the arcade....

The best arcade game there ever was, the best there ever will be. The pedal is awesome, the shooting is awesome, I really don't know what to say. It's a lightgun game, but done to a higher quality than anybody has ever seen or will ever see. I love you, Time Crisis 3. I hope you are not superceded in all arcades by the inferior Time Crisis 4. =(

22. Resident Evil 2

Another game I expected to be higher, this is more or less the pinnacle of PS1-era survival horror, I don't see how one could like the genre and not have a lot of time for Resident Evil 2. The two-disc system was fun and working your way through the ruined city and the police station was seriously fun. The foreboding presence of the tyrant on the second disc was great, and I jumped sky-high at the licker crawling across the window early on. Terrifying stuff.

21. Silent Hill 2

Man...

When I was playing this game, I lived in a flat (apartment) over the Pub/Restaurant my parents managed. It was a very long apartment, with one long corridor running through the middle of it. My nightmare for years was that I would get up in the night to go to the toilet (that was across said corridor), and that I would look down it and as I was looking down it, a flash of lightning would hit and I would see Pyramid Head, silhouetted there. Subsequently, I wanted to go to the toilet during the ngiht A LOT during that time, and was always terrified to get up as a result.

I think the impact Silent Hill 2 had on my life alone means it deserves a place on my list. No game has ever matched it for atmosphere or sheer fear-factor. It genuinely scared me on more than one occasion. It was a subtle, kind of psychological horror that really got to you in the end.

20. Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer

The Spyro trilogy, man...every game is so good. Snubbing the original from this list is a pain, but there you go. 2 delivers a hilarious villain in Ripto. Finding the secret areas was also as fun as it gets, and the world alone were really refreshigly well-designed. I've never met anyone who hates Spyro 2. Some are indifferent, but an outright dislike? Something I've never really seen. I don't know why you would (that said I thought the same about Rayman the other day, until l3fty stunk the place up) It's got great charm and humour and the gameplay to match.

The latest PES is certainly a better recreation of football than FIFA, but FIFA has a much more robust feature set. I'm looking forward to FIFA 12, I think that might be my sports game this year. I'm really liking where they're going with the physics engine, defence, and other areas on the pitch.
