Don't grab Sarah though, in the off chance that she'll get ported with us, there would be nobody to open the door, or we'd screw up time, or something. Just press the button, we've got what we need.
Maybe. But it seems more likely that she, like everything else we take with us, becomes a duplicate and there will be another Sarah back where she originally was. Therefore when we call Sarah to come get us out we will have another Sarah to talk to her and explain things. Repeat process until we have a whole team of Sarah's to help us succeed!

You and Sarah stand out on the street. The sky is dark and smokey, as usual. You wonder how long it’s been since these people saw the sun. You begin to walk around the city, taking back alley’s as you do, and trying to stay out of sight. Your clothes are much darker now, so it isn’t much of a problem.

New Oakland is a shady place, you know that much for sure. Many of the storefronts are boarded up. Businesses run out of town by crime, by war, or just from a lack of business. While walking, you do however come across two stores of interest.

The first is an electronics store. “N2Tech”. It’s possible that you could find something useful in there, and who knows what kind of technology they could offer. The second store is some sort of all purpose general store. “Clarke’s”. In the window you see a few tools, but very few that you recognize. In any case, it would be a nice chance for you to see how much money you have on your UCCs.

As you stand on the dirty street, strange cars whizzing past you, a sound begins to emit from Sarah’s pocket. It’s her phone. She pulls it out and looks at the screen. You look over her at, a worried look on your face. “It’s Dr. Leonard isn’t it.”

She nods.

“Don’t answer it, Sarah.”

“I have to. I’m sorry. He’ll suspect something if I don’t.” Sarah presses the screen and raises it to her ear. “Hello? No, sir. - Yes sir. - Yes, he is. - No sir.” You begin to panic. What could he be saying to her, and how is she being so calm about it? “No, I’m at lunch. - Yes, I’ll be back in 20 minutes or so. Okay. Goodbye, sir.”

Sarah presses the button on the face of the phone and puts it back into her pocket.

“So, what did he say?” you ask, not looking forward to the answer.

“He said there’s an emergency and he needs me back at the office soon. I told him I’m at lunch so that should buy us some time. So let’s do what you need to do, and do it quickly.” For the first time since you met her, you don’t trust Sarah. She’s probably telling the truth, but something in the back of your mind is telling you to run.

“Alright, Al, we don’t have much time so let’s get moving.” Sarah says, her demeanor unchanged.

A) Head into the electronics store, N2Tech.
B) Head into the general store, Clarke’s.
C) Head the BART station.
D) Listen to the voice in the back of your head and try to ditch Sarah.

Eh, even if Sarah ends up selling us out we can just push the button and betray her next time. At least we'll know one way or the other to trust her or not. After this we should probably hit the road though.

“Let’s check out this tech store. Could be some cool stuff in here.” you say to Sarah, motioning for her to follow you.

“Yeah, well, prepare for disappointment.” she says.

The two of you approach the store and the front door slides open. “Welcome to N2Tech. We’re in to tech, so you don’t have to be.” a recorded voice says aloud. Looking around, you’re absolutely taken aback by the amount of unrecognizable stuff in the store. A sales representative approaches you. “Hello, sir. Can I help you find anything?”

You think for a moment about what you could possibly need. “Do you have any personal teleporters or anything like that?”

The man laughs, “Hah, sir, I can see you have a good sense of humor. Do you like the Ultranet? I bet you do. How would you like to be able to watch videos or surf the Ultranet just by thinking about it?”

“Uh, that sounds pretty amazing. How does it work?” You sound like an infomercial. Sarah sighs audibly at the thought of you being suckered into the salesman pathetic pitch.

“Well, with the latest OptiNetrics optical enhancer, you can do just that. We’ll even install right here in the store.” the salesman says, adjusting his tie.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about at all, but I want it. How does it work?” you ask.

“Well, we simple implant a small chip into your eye socket and -”

“Whoa whoa, hold on a second. WHAT?!” You’re absolutely horrified by the thought of anything being inserted into your eye socket.

“Sir, it’s a very simple procedure. Even I’m trained to do it. The chip goes into the socket, and we place a microscopically thin sheet of polycarbonate over your eyeballs that allows information to be projected straight into your field of vision.”

Sarah interjects. “Al, seriously, don’t do this. This guy’s a glorified conman. You can get something much better and much more reliable if you shop harder. If you agree to this, you’re in for a world of regret. What he’s offering is a cheap alternative to something you can get for probably cheaper anyway in the RSF Bodymod district.”

“Do you guys have something, uh, less intrusive?” you ask.

“Well,” the salesman says, “we have the handheld model, the Karion Pane, but it’s huge.” He points over to what appears to be a thin sheet of glass with information displayed on it. The entire thing is no bigger than a playing card.

“Come on Al, let’s go. You don’t need this junk. It's a waste of money. Something better will come along.”

A) Buy the sketchy OptiNetrics Optical Enhancer.
B) Buy the handheld Pane, by Karion.
C) Leave the store and buy nothing.

Can't Sarah surf the Ultranet on her phone? Hell if we can surf the net on our phones they'd have to be able to in almost 200 years from now.

Sarah looks at you disapprovingly. “Yeah, you know, I think I’m gonna pass. Thanks though.” You turn away from the salesman and motion for Sarah to follow you.

“Are you sure? You’re missing out on a great opportunity!.” the salesman responds.

“I’m sure I am.” you roll your eyes and head for the exit. Sarah follows you. The sliding door opens and the two of you end up back out on the street. “You know what? I’m tired of New Oakland. I’m going to the BART station. You can come with me if you want, but if you need to get back to Dr. Leonard, then I understand.”

Sarah looks down at the ground, and then back up at you. Her voice filled with hesitation, she speaks. “I... I’m going to come with you. Dr. Leonard can go to hell.” There's a hint of malice in her voice. You're relieved to hear her answer.

“That’s what I like to hear. And not just because I have no idea how to get to the BART station from here.” You smile at Sarah and she smiles back.

“This way.” Sarah leads you towards the nearest BART station.


You arrive at the 12th St. BART station a short time later. It’s another underground station, and you and Sarah begin to descend down the stairs. You walk through a long, smelly corridor towards the gate, your footsteps echoing as you walk. You approach the ticket gate and a card scanner. It looks identical to the one you used before. You take your place in line and wait for your turn.

As you stand in line to get your tickets, Sarah gasps. “Al, he’s here.” She grabs you and turns you around. You squint your eyes down the corridor. Sure enough, you can see Dr. Leonard heading your direction. To his right and left are two armed guards. You aren’t sure if they see you yet.

You think desperately for a way out of the situation.

A) Hide and hope they don’t find you.
B) Grab Sarah and run into the station.
C) Press the button.
D) Other (Please specify)

Well we don't want to cause any sort of commotion in case they don't see us, so I think B is out. Hiding doesn't really seem to get us anywhere. I think we'll have to come up with some kind of D option but I'm not sure what yet.

F***! I would've suggested D) Duck into the crowd, but we aren't in a crowd we're in a line possibly right within sight. We're sitting ducks standing where we are. I'll go with

D) Casually dip out of line and walk into the station as nonchalantly as possible, then hide amongst the crowd and hope they don't find us, but be ready to run if we're spotted before we can get out of their field of vision

You pull Sarah aside casually and walk out of the line and out of sight of Dr. Leonard and the guards. You’re slightly panicked, but having Sarah with you makes you feel better about the situation. Once out of sight, you check the first door you find and see if it’s locked. It’s not. You open the door and walk inside, flipping on the light as you do.

Inside you find a storage room filled with broken trashcans, extra cameras, some strange looking cleaning machines, and shelves filled with various tools. You put your back up against the wall and look at Sarah. She looks much more nervous than usual. “We’ll be okay Sarah. If they had seen us walk away, they would have started running. They’ll never find us in here if we stay qui-.”

Catching you off guard, Sarah comes in for a hug. She grabs you tightly and talks quietly into your ear. “Do you trust me?”

Still a little shocked by Sarah’s actions, you respond. “I do.”

“Good, because no matter what happens, I need you to keep trusting me.” Her whispery words flutter around in your ear.

You whisper back into her ear. “Okay.”

Sarah’s hand moves up to your neck and you feel a quick stabbing pain. You violently push Sarah away from you. You reach into your pocket for the button, but it’s gone. Looking over at Sarah, you see that she has it firmly in her hand, the glowing light emanating from between her fingers. In her other hand, some sort of injection device.

You start to feel woozy. “Why...” you ask, falling to your hands and knees.

“I’m sorry, Al. This is what's best for you.”

The room begins to spin and your vision goes black as you slump to the floor.


You wake up.

Your eyes are still heavy from the sedative, but they slowly begin to open to reveal your location; a stark white office, with nothing on the walls, no windows, and a single glass desk. In front of you at the desk sits Dr. Leonard. You try to get up, but you find yourself bound to a chair. You struggle to free yourself.

“Please, relax Alameda, we’re not here to hurt you.” Dr. Leonard says in a very calm tone.

You give up with your struggle, accepting the fact that you’re not going to get out of the restraints. You look around the room. To your left is Sarah. She looks away from you, avoiding eye contact. To your right are two men you’ve never seen before. A black man, and an Asian man. They look very stylish.

“What do you want with me?” You ask.

“Sarah tells me you’ve been progressing very quickly with your shifting experience. You’ve only pressed the button 4 times and you’re already almost completely over the pain? Impressive.” Dr. Leonard says.

You respond in a somewhat hostile tone. “Answer my question.”

“Very well,” Dr. Leonard stands up from his chair and begins to walk around the room, “I will tell you everything you want to know. After all, I see no reason to keep anything a secret from you anymore. Not after today. What would you like to know?”

“What is Project Flux?” you ask.

“To put it simply, you are Project Flux. It was a project we started 35 years ago in response to the Republic of San Francisco’s increasing hostility towards New Oakland. When the Great Bay War started, the RSF drastically out performed us when it came to technology and weaponry. We developed the project to assist us in the war. Unfortunately, Project Flux failed miserably. The other two projects we started years later however, did a great deal in slowing down the RSFs attack.”

“How did Project Flux fail?” You seem confused.

Dr. Leonard leans against the front of his desk. “It failed because you disappeared for 30 years. Don’t ask us how, we don’t know. Only you have that answer. We were hoping you could tell us what happened.”

“I... I don’t remember.” you stutter. “Why me though?”

“You volunteered. You told us you were looking for some extra cash for medical experiments. I suppose we should have told you what we were planning, but we were foolish back then, and we were desperate to stop the war. Do you really not remember anything that happened before you disappeared?”

“I don’t. I don’t know if I want to now.” All of this information is a lot for you to take in. You don’t know what to think.

“Do you have any other questions?”

A) “What were the other two projects?”
B) “Why did you try to kill me?”
