“What were the other two projects?” you ask.

“That would be these two fine gentlemen to your right.” the doctor motions to the men you saw standing there moments earlier. They nod at you. “After you disappeared, we waited a few weeks before we decided it was time to move on to other projects. We abandoned the ideas behind Project Flux and moved on to something slightly more controllable. As you probably realize, time is not something to be trifled with.” he lets out a soft chuckle.

“So what’s their deal?” you ask, ignoring his joking tone.

“Ah yes, the man to the right is Subject Berkeley; to his left, is Subject Concord. We’re very proud of these two. Berkeley has some very interesting... “enhancements”, if you will, that make him hundreds of times more agile than the average person. Concord here is equipped with matter emitters and manipulators, which give him a form of artificial telekinesis. It’s all very exciting. They will be our primary weapons against the RSF.”

A) “Why did you try to kill me?”
B) “What about Sarah? What’s her angle.”
C) “So what do you want with me?”

You’re impressed, but it’s not enough to make you forget about your situation. “So what do you want with me?” the tight restraints dig into the tops of your wrists.

“We want you to be a part of the team. We want you to help us to defeat the RSF.” Dr. Leonard smiles at you. “Help us make history.”

“Why should I help you?” say respond, your voice filled with disdain.

“You’ve seen what it looks like outside. They dump their pollution into our skies, into our water. They attack our neighborhoods, they cut themselves off from the rest of the world because they think they’re too good. How dare they assume they’re better than we are?” he cuts himself off and calms down. “Besides, do you really have any other choice?”

Sarah finally decides to speak up. “Al, what you have here is a gift. What else are you going to do with it? I know you’re not the kind of person to just sit back and do nothing. Don’t squander this opportunity. All the help I’ve given you, do me the favor of helping me now. Please.”

You say nothing. You don’t have many options at this point.

A) “Okay, I’ll help you.”
B) “If I help you, what’s in it for me?”
C) “I’m not helping you after all you put me through.”
D) Say nothing.

“If I help you, what’s in it for me?” you ask.

The doctor sighs. “There always has to be something more, doesn’t there? Isn’t being a hero enough? You’ll use your unique ability to end a war that’s been going on for decades. Lives will be saved. What more do you want?”

“I don’t see how I would be of any help.” you respond.

“You don’t think pressing that blasted button and starting the day over is the only thing you can do, do you? Project Flux is more than that. I promise that if you decide to help, you will be trained further. You’ll be more powerful than you ever could have imagined. What do you say?” Dr. Leonard leans forward, anxious for your response.

A) Say Yes.
B) Say No.

You stare at Dr. Leonard. His soulless eyes studying you, as if they hope to figure out your response before you give it. You look over at Berkeley and Concord. They whisper something to each other and then laugh. Finally, you look over at Sarah. At this very moment, you hate her. But you remember what she said to you at the BART station. “Trust me”. You told her you would. She helped you, now’s your chance to help her.

“Okay, I’ll do it.” You feel like you can hear everyone in the room exhale at the exact same time.

Dr. Leonard throws his hands up in the air. “Excellent!” He walks back around his desk and sits down. ”I already have a few tasks in mind for you and Sarah. These should be pretty simple tasks that will get you develop your expanded abilities and allow you some time to get used to the types of things you’ll be doing to help us in the fight against the RSF.”

Sarah walks over to you and begins to untie you. You slip one of your wrists free and rub it with your hand.

Dr. Leonard continues. “I’ll let you choose which task you want to take on first. Just know that these are very dangerous things you’ll be doing, and it’s likely that you may be hurt or even killed if you aren’t extremely careful.”

“I understand.” you say. You’re still a little weary of Dr. Leonard, especially after everything you’ve seen him do in your previous Flux shifts.

“Great.” he says, picking up a file from his desk and reading from it. ”The first task is a quick excursion to Alameda where you’ll need to do a bit of sneaking around and information gathering from various locations. The second is a reconnaissance mission or sorts to Yerba Buena island out in the center of the bay. We’ve had reports of something big going down at the connecting military base there. The final task is a little more dangerous. One of our storage warehouses at the Port of New Oakland has reportedly been taken over by a gang looking for weapons to upgrade their forces with. We need them taken out. Of course, if you do clear it out, you can help yourself to any weapons or tech that you stumble across.”

Sarah finishes untying you and hands you your messenger bag. The thought crosses your mind that you should try to kill Dr. Leonard, but with Berkeley and Concord present, you feel it would only get you killed in return. You also no longer have the button.

“So, what’s it going to be my lad?”

A) Go for your gun and take out Dr. Leonard.
B) Stealth mission to Alameda.
C) Reconnaissance mission to Yerba Buena Island.
D) Recovery mission in the Port of New Oakland.

The idea of finally being able to get into Alameda is enough for you to choose the first task. “We’ll go to Alameda.” you say, confident in your choice.

“I was hoping you’d say that. It’s probably the easiest of the three missions, and you aren’t exactly Superman. Not yet at least.” Dr. Leonard adjusts his glasses and opens the Alameda file. “Berkeley, Concord, you can go now. We aren’t going to need either of you for this one.”

You’re happy that you get to spend some more time alone with Sarah. You suddenly have a lot of questions, and going on a mission alone with her to Alameda should give you ample time to grill her on a few things. Berkeley and Concord nod at the doctor and exit the room, joking and laughing with each other as they do. You and Sarah take a seat at two chairs positioned in front of Dr. Leonard’s desk.

“Sarah, I know I said I was going to be sending you alone on this one, but I think this is a good chance to show our new friend here the ropes.” The doctor looks at you. “Additionally, it might be nice for him to visit his home town again. I’m sure he’s been dying to see what’s become of it in the last 30 years.” Dr. Leonard flips through the files in the folder on his desk. “Let’s see here... ah yes. You have two main objectives in Alameda. First, there’s a software company on the west end of the island called Total Immersion. They’ve been assisting the RSF by providing them with training simulators, GPS data and various other training programs for their soldiers. Sarah, I need you to get inside and upload this virus into the system.” Dr. Leonard slides a small card across in the direction of Sarah. “It’ll wipe out their entire network and the RSF will have one less ally to use against us.”

Sarah picks up the virus and slips it into her pocket.

Dr. Leonard continues. “Your second objective in Alameda is to eliminate Charles Day, the CEO of Total Immersion. He lives in the residential district near the east end of the island. Getting him out of the picture will permanently sever the companies connection with the RSF.”

You suddenly realize what he’s saying. “Wait a second, you never said anything about murder. I’m not a murderer.”

“Well you better get used to it. There’s a war going on out there, and sacrifices must be made. Besides, I never said you had to murder him. Just get him out of the picture.”

You say nothing, and look over at Sarah, hoping she’ll back you up. Sarah says nothing as well. You’re disappointed.

“Last but not least, here are your access badges for Alameda.” He slides two badges across the desk.” You’ve got two choices for entering. First, you can take the Webster Tube under the estuary which is walking distance from here and will lead you into the business district, or... you can take BART over to Fruitvale and take a shuttle into the residential district. It’s up to you. Just make sure you finish both objectives.” Dr. Leonard closes the folder. “Alright, enough talk. Get going.” He shoos you away from his desk. You and Sarah stand up and head for the door. “And Sarah, please make sure he at least tries to use some of his skills. I’d hate to have gone through all of this trouble for nothing.” Sarah nods.

The two of you exit the office and close the door behind you. You exit into a noisy hallway. Based on all of the other offices around, you assume you’re back in Location Labs, on the 6th floor. “Sarah, you’ve got a LOT of explaining to do.”

“Not right now, let’s get out of the building first. Which way did you want to get into Alameda?”

A) Webster Tube into the business district.
B) Fruitvale bus into the residential district.
