But I have 52 million shares! Quick, what's 52 million times zero??? And don't tell me it's zero!

You and Sarah begin the walk towards the Webster Tube, a tunnel that leads under the estuary from New Oakland to Alameda. With the access cards the doctor gave you, you should have no trouble getting in. As you walk down the streets of Oakland, you pass through Chinatown. Unlike the other areas you’ve seen, Chinatown seems to be doing very well. Food vendors out on the street, people walking around and having conversations. You’re a little surprised that it seems to be doing so well.

You make your way through Chinatown and approach the remains of what looks to be an old abandoned freeway. Underneath the freeway, you see some bright lights projecting on a large cement structure. “That’s the tunnel entrance.” Sarah says. “We’re almost there.” You walk under the freeway and on the other side, find a roadblock. The setup is similar to the other Alameda checkpoints. Lots of guards, except the guards seem to be more relaxed about people walking up to them. The estuary is wider here, so you can only barely see the dome in the distance, past all of the buildings.

You and Sarah approach one of the guards standing near a gate. Sarah begins to talk to him. “Do you know when the next shuttle to Alameda will be here?” she says.

“Should be one coming up any second. Ah, there it is.” The three of you look over at the tunnel entrance and see a large bus like vehicle, the same kind you saw at Fruitvale BART, exiting the tunnel and dropping off passengers. “Can I see your access cards please?” the man asks. Sarah reaches into her pocket and pulls out the two cards. She hands them to the guard and he studies them carefully. His eyes look up from the cards and he makes deep eye contact with you. “Alright, step on through. The shuttle should be leaving in a few minutes.”

“Thank you.” Sarah says. You remain silent, as you have for a while now. You don’t know if it’s because you can’t trust Sarah, or if it’s because you’re excited to get into Alameda. Maybe you’re afraid you’ll mess something up.

Just then, you hear screaming; some sort of commotion. You turn around and see a man sprinting towards the entrance of the tunnel. Guards open fire on him. The bullets hit him, but do nothing. They almost seem to be bouncing off of him. The man never stops, never looks back, and disappears into the darkness of the tunnel. Guards begin running towards the tunnel, but it’s too late. There’s an explosion inside the tunnel. A ball of fire erupts outward. You shield your eyes.

The checkpoint is now on high alert. You see people waiting in line for the shuttle being ushered away. The guard you were talking to just seconds ago runs over to the tunnel, his gun in hand. Sarah looks surprisingly calm about all of this. She must be used to it. In the midst of sudden chaos, you need to make a decision.

A) Continue to try to enter Alameda through the tunnel system.
B) Stick around the checkpoint and see what happens.
C) Head to the Fruitvale BART station and the Alameda residential entrance.
D) Try to ditch Sarah and go out on your own.
E) Other (Please specify)

You and Sarah take the elevator down to the first floor and exit the lobby. Out on the street, things look different now that you’re not on the run. Still, every time you see New Oakland, you hate it more and more. You turn your attention back to Sarah. “Well, we’re outside, so why don’t you tell me what the **** is going on?”

Sarah sighs. “Al, I’m sorry. When you disappeared 30 years ago, Location Labs started hiring people to watch your cell. 24 hours a day, there were eyes on your cell, just in case you returned. As you can imagine, most people don’t last long in a job like that. I was hired to do that job, Al. When you reappeared today, I didn’t really know what to do, so I told Dr. Leonard right away. He told me to do whatever I had to to get you used to pressing the button, even if that meant putting you in danger. So I stood outside of your cell and waited. Then you pressed the intercom button, and well...”

“So why would he kill you?” you ask.

“I guess he was just doing it to scare you into pressing the button. I don’t agree with it, but I’m here now, so I guess it’s alright.” Sarah answer makes sense, but it still looks like she’s sad about it.

“Well, if it makes you feel any better, you killed him in another shift.”

“It does.” She smiles.

“So everything you ever did to help me was just to train me? Letting me explore the building, helping me escape? What about the stuff hidden in the wall of my cell? Or the messenger bag in the locker? Was that you too?”

Sarah squints her eyes. “No, that wasn’t. I was honestly really confused when I saw you open that locker before. Maybe it was another one of Dr. Leonard’s tricks, but he didn’t inform me about that.”

“Well look, let’s get out of here and over to Alameda. There are still questions I need answered. Once we get this silly virus thing out of the way, I can look into figuring out my past.” you say, slightly agitated by the whole situation.

“Sounds like a plan. Let’s get going.” She responds.

E) A, but ask Sarah what the hell just happened.

I kind of have a feeling I know what's happening at the checkpoint so I'd rather just get moving but knowing for certain would be cool because knowledge is power or something.

“What the hell just happened?” you ask in a panic.

“I don’t know. But I have a feeling we’re not getting through the tunnel.” Sarah says. She looks around, probably trying to find another guard to talk to about the shuttle.

“No, but did you see that guy? The bullets bounced right off of him.” You almost think it’s kind of cool, but the chaos of the situation around you makes you think something bigger is happening here.

“Yeah I saw him. Let’s see if we can still get through anyway.” Sarah moves cautiously towards another guard standing near a barrier. “Excuse me sir...” The guard spins around quickly and points his gun at Sarah. He looks startled by her presence.

He regains his composure and speaks. “Ma’am, please leave the area immediately. The tunnel is closed until further notice.”

“Is there any way we can get through here, we’ve got important business in Alameda.”

“I’m sorry ma’am, you’re not safe here. Please leave.” His tone becomes firm, and Sarah knows he isn’t going to back down. Sarah walks back over to you.

“So what now?” you ask. “I say we just head over to the Fruitvale BART station and use the residential entrance. No point in hanging around here and putting ourselves in danger. What if there’s another explosion?”

“No, I’ve got an idea.” Sarah cracks a slight smile. “There are old emergency access hatches above the tunnel that will lead us inside. They should be relatively easy to get to. I say we avoid Fruitvale and go for that.”

“You’re joking, right? You want to go INTO the exploded tunnel?” It doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but you feel like you should question it just out of principle.

“The explosion was only at the entrance. Shouldn’t be too much of a problem once we get inside. Besides, maybe we can see what the guy was up to.”

A) Agree with Sarah and sneak into the tunnel.
B) Disagree with Sarah and go to Fruitvale.

I'm really sorry about the lack of updates guys. I start a new job on Monday and I'm really busy with my last few days of work. Don't worry, I'm not going to abandon this though. I'll try to get an update out when I get home.

Please stop whining and try to understand Silvercross's predicament. He got a new job. He's swamped with his old one and is transitioning to the new one. It's also contest season.

Bawwing about how "It's dead, it's dead! We want an ending! Wah!!" isn't helping anything. Either be patient or leave. Frankly, I'd prefer the latter because you're starting to annoy me.

“Okay, let’s do it.” you say. You don’t feel like wasting time, and you especially don’t feel like going back to Fruitvale.

“Great, follow me.” Sarah begins to walk in the opposite direction of the tunnel. You jog to catch up with her, and follow her under the broken down freeway. “We have to go into Jack London Square, the access hatches are in the sewer there.”

“What’s Jack London Square?” you ask, as you Sarah leads you away from beneath the freeway and through a broken chain link fence.

“It’s an old tourist spot on the water, but mostly these days it’s just a ghost town. New Oakland isn’t exactly the kind of place you want to visit, so Jack London Square kind of... shut down. It’s mostly a hideout for criminals, the homeless, drug addicts, and the rather unsavory.”

“It would have been nice if you told me that earlier. Maybe we should have gone to Fruitvale after all.”

“Don’t worry. People tend to leave other people alone there unless threatened. We should be able to handle ourselves.”

“I sure hope so.” The two of you emerge from an alley onto an abandoned street. The area isn’t destroyed like Fruitvale was, but it isn’t bustling like downtown New Oakland either. It’s just dead. Windows and doors are boarded up, and the streets are eerily silent. Sarah leads you down the street. Far off in the distance, you can see the dome of Alameda, and the estuary between you and it. You turn another corner, down another comatose street. You see a various figures shuffle out of view as you approach. “How do you know where we’re going?” you ask.

“Just trust me, okay? I’ve been here before.” She stops, and looks to her right at boarded up store front. The door isn’t boarded though, and looks like it actually gets used pretty often. “Here, in this building, there’s sewer access in the basement.” Sarah knocks on the door.

“Go away.” a shaky voice says from the other side.

“I just want access to the sewer. Let me in.” Sarah replies.

“No, I said go away.” the shaky voice responds.

“If you don’t open this door, I’m going to have to open it myself. You don’t want me to have to do that.” Sarah reaches for the pistol tucked into the back of her pants, hidden under her shirt.

You clear your throat and speak up. “Excuse me, Sarah? It sounds like you just threatened that man. I’m pretty sure you said we shouldn’t threaten anybody.” Without the button, everything makes you extra nervous. No resets, no do-overs, no mulligans. Whatever happens, happens.

“Relax, I’ve dealt with this guy before. He’s a piece of ****” She bangs on the door again. “Open up Balthazar. I’m not gonna ask you again.”

A light above the door turns on. Sara smiles at you. “See?” Without warning, bullets tear through the wooden door. You and Sarah barely managed to dive out of the way in time.

“Goddamnit Sarah, are you trying to get us killed?” You reach into your bag and grab your gun, just to be safe. You and Sarah lean up against the walls on each side of the door.

“Listen Al, it’s either through this building, or we go deeper into Jack London. I don’t think you want to go deeper.” Sarah readies her pistol.

You think again about the device. Dr. Leonard said that you should be able to expand your powers, and that in time, you wouldn’t need the device. Another shot blasts through the door, making you flinch.

A) Go deeper into Jack London Square and find another access hatch.
B) Try to get into the building with Sarah.
C) Convince Sarah to go back to the BART station.

Hey everyone, I have some thoughts to run by you.

My new job pretty much allows for zero time to write while at work, which was how I wrote 90% of this thing. When I get home, the last thing I feel like doing is writing in the few spare hours a day that I have. So, what I'm thinking is this:

I write only on the weekends, and you'll get maybe 4 or 5 updates across both days, depending on what I have time for. HOWEVER, I also like the idea of abandoning the CYOA structure a little, and just writing more, with a CYOA choice every few write ups. It's a lot easier for me to write the story I have in my head when I don't have to come up with ways to shoe horn options in all the time. Finally, my last thought was that maybe I'd just end the story here and let you in on where this whole thing was going.

What do you guys think?
