No, it's not, man. Come on, now... The storytelling was abysmal, barely anything happened for 80% of the game and EVERYTHING was crammed into the last 20%. It gets to a point when you just don't care much or feel attached at all anymore. Don't get me started on the countless USELESS characters, the stupid element allocation system, etc., etc.

Chrono Cross has a smaller-than-its-predecessor-by-far but nonetheless rabid little fanbase that dwarfs the fanbases of many other games.

Liquid Wind, you seem to forget B8 is full of whiners/people who feel the need to hate popular things.

Chrono Cross is almost universally acclaimed by critics, and rightfully so.

I'm not sure what Vlado is talkin about. I mean, yea, the plot text dumps at the end of the game were unforgivable, and the rectons in CTDS create plotholes, but the plot progression was still really good, convolutedness aside >_>

The plotholes and the text dump can be fixed with a remake\port!

The ending is almost offensive. Pseudo-philosophical monologue that literally delves into the realm of spermatozoa on one occasion followed by same-for-everyone single lines from your two companions and topped off with a woman in a city.

like I said, it's what you would expect from a mid 90s - early 2000s square game. juvenile storytelling that is wrought with mechanical flaws? yes. imaginative world with some of the best art direction of its era? yes.

the stupid element allocation system

it was less of a pain for me than most final fantasy games, chrono cross has one of the better battle/skill systems overall really.

chrono cross definitely has flaws, I'm not saying it's a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination...I just don't see it as significantly worse than other games that are more well loved, it's right in the same category as FFVII-IX, tactics, and parasite eve for me

For what it's worth Chrono Cross is a 7.5 game for me. Its strengths are unstoppable. The problems I have with it mean it's firmly in the realm of three-star experience overall though.

I guess the other thing for me is that gaming is more about the experiences than writing, I can tolerate a somewhat questionable plot if the game really sucks me into its world. a lot of times a very minimal plot like ICO, SotC, or super metroid may even be ideal although I also can appreciate the more heavy handed traditional approach of people like kojima or pretty much everyone that works at square. although it is jarringly different from chrono trigger, I love the mystical oceanic world of el nido

This might have worked out for CC if they had actually stuck to this approach the whole way through, instead of giving us that ridiculous plot dump at the end.

Except Final Fantasy VII and Xenogears did an excellent job at telling their stories, and came out earlier in the same era.

I have to agree here, but it's a shame they didn't do a better job with it.

it was less of a pain for me than most final fantasy games, chrono cross has one of the better battle/skill systems overall really.

Really? It took me ages to set up the elements properly (I suppose I could have just used auto-allocate, but that just gave stupid results that weren't close to what I wanted)... The battles were really damn slow. I agree the battle system had some potential, but it just wasn't done all that well.

In terms of game stories:

Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy 7
Chrono Cross
Suikoden II
Final Fantasy 8

It would be hard for me to rank everything though with character development, emotional attachment, music, gameplay...etc. All five are such spectacular games in their own ways.

Yes, simpler (and intentionally so) though it may be, it's nevertheless a very emotionally-charged game with multiple story turns (a concept SE seems unaware of these days and a crucial element in crafting an engaging narrative) and a satisfying resolution.
