FFVI is fun, but I am always conflicted with it. I like most of the characters, but I hate all the separating and being forced to use ones I don't want to. Those things make me consider putting FFV in my Top 5 FFs instead of VI.

Thankfully, Celes, Sabin, and Edgar are the first three you get in WoR, so I'm basically working with 3/4 of my ideal party anyway.

And I can deal with Terra or Cyan until Locke gets back.

Oh, so I went back to the cabin at the beginning of WoR, and I found a piece of Magicite washed ashore on the beach! Lucky me!

Got Relm and Strago back. The little dungeon in Owzer's House was pretty neat, better than I remembered. Short but sweet. The boss was pretty annoying though. Not difficult, just annoying and fairly time consuming for a boss fight. I was glad to get to put Bum Rush to the test here, and it helped out. Got myself a nice new Esper companion along the way, too! Went to Fanatics Tower to get Strago back, but I'm not quite ready to try to climb that thing yet.

I guess we'll go to Doma Castle and do Cyan's quest now.

Enemies who attack primarily with status anomalies are the worst.

Especially ones who use Imp. The Imp's picture in the status screen irritates me because it's like a trolling face.

I mean I'm not ready to deal with the annoyance of it.

But anyway, Cyan's Soul completed. Probably the most unique portion of the game, with the way the areas are designed and the boss fights. For the most part, it's all a bunch of puzzles, trying to figure out which door to enter, which switches to flip, what boxes to close, etc. The boss fight against the, uh, "Dream Stooges" isn't too tough. They're like this game's version of the Magus Sisters. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses and things they try to do, but overall, they're pretty easy. I enjoyed the scenes inside of Doma Castle where Cyan is recalling some of his old memories, particularly where he confesses his love for his wife. All of it is made better by the fact that Cyan's Theme plays throughout. Wrexsoul is pretty easy, just kind of annoying to get out of you when he possesses one of your characters. Runic pretty much negates any of his offense, so that's not a problem.

Anyway, let's go ahead and get Locke. I think I'm about ready to be done with this bad boy.

Doomgaze is awesome, especially because hunting for him is an excuse to fly around listening to the spiffy music.

Not a big fan of the Cyan's nightmare/soul/mind/castle/chihuahua/whatever segment though. Not too sure why really.

Wrexsoul is a joke if you have the right spell and know to use it. *cough*X-Zone*cough*

X-Zone is such an awesome spell.

I tend not to use it on Wrexsoul, it just feels cruel. Besides, using Break on your own party members (since you can cure it and still be at full HP) always felt like such a cute little strategy and it's a shame to waste that.

Bah, accidentally backspaced off of the page, so now I have to re-write this, so it probably won't be as good as the first time!

Finished the Phoenix Cave. The two-party system was better than I remembered it being. Having Mog with Moogle Charm in the weaker party goes a long way so you don't have to deal with random encounters for them. Probably wouldn't have hurt to let them build a little EXP, but oh well. Anyway, I thought this dungeon was pretty well designed for the two party thing. Everything flowed pretty well from party to party. It wasn't too difficult to figure out what needed to be done and when you were supposed to switch parties, so that was nice. Also beat the Red Dragon. Probably the easiest one yet.

Upon finding Locke (...how in the heck did he navigate the entire thing by himself anyway?), who has found the fabled Phoenix Esper, he accepts our offer to go with us, at least as far as Kohlingen. Then we're treated to the best scene in the game, where he uses the power of Phoenix to revive Rachel. At first, it seems like it isn't going to work because the Magicite is too old and worn, but eventually, Rachel opens her eyes. The Phoenix has just enough power left to give them a few final moments together. Locke isn't quite ready to accept that she doesn't have long, but Rachel takes this opportunity to try to comfort him. She tells him that she'll always love him, and that even when the accident occurred, all she thought of was him. She doesn't hold any sort of grudge or hold him responsible for what happened to her. Then she tells him that he has to let go of the guilt and burden he's put upon himself for all of that. She desires to set his heart free from all of that so he can learn to love again and regain his self-respect. As her dying wish, she implores the Phoenix to be reborn and give its power to Locke, and the Esper grants that wish.

Outside, Celes is waiting for Locke, but he assures her that he's going to be okay. He says, "I feel lighter than air..." I don't know what it is about that line, but it's probably my favorite line in the game. There's something...I can't quite put my finger on it. It's a simple line that could be easily overlooked, but there's something deeper there that I can't quite explain. It's like Locke's moment where he finally releases everything that's been holding him back all this time. It's been so long since he hasn't had that weight on his shoulder that he almost feels like he weighs nothing at all. Just a good moment for Locke. Celes doesn't say anything, but she takes a step closer to him as the scene fades to black.

Before rejoining the party in full, Locke gives us the treasures of the Phoenix Cave, including the Valiant Knife. I also managed to get myself a Ribbon in the Phoenix Cave, so that was a great find.

I remember the Phoenix Cave being a fun place for Relm or Gogo to run amuck, since giving them Fake Mustache to use Control on the dinosaurs there let you use the dino's instant kill attack on themselves and any enemies around them

Hmm...despite previously mocking it for not killing anyone, probably the end of the world (as we know it, and I feel fine). Kefka scoring a victory over tediously sappy friendship speeches everywhere with his self-help book line rates highly with me too.

Favorite scene is definitely the end of the world, as well as the events right before it; Celes stabbing Kefka, Kefka offing the Emperor and moving the Statues, and Shadow unexpectedly coming back to save the party. To this day i wonder if Shadow always planned to save the party and left so he could have the element of surprise, or if he actually had a crisis of conscience. Either way him coming back to save their asses is awesome.

What level would be considered an "appropriate" level for your characters to be before tackling the final dungeon? I don't really remember the end of the game being that tough, but I don't remember what level I was either.

Well, none of my characters are level 40 yet!

But I'm still going to do Fanatics Tower and that one dungeon you find by going underground with Figaro Castle or whatever. Guess I ought to try to get Gogo, too!

Who was it that said they actually liked the Fanatics Tower?

Because this is like playing Xenosaga with its 10 minute random encounters and then making me go all the way up and all the way back down.

A four story tower shouldn't take me 2 hours to complete.

Not to mention, I'm not even getting any EXP for all this crap!

Some of FFVI's gameplay mechanics frustrate me too much so I grind to (relatively) extreme levels to bypass said frustration.

Don't really care what people call me for that, I've already done a LLG on it for crying out loud!
