Yeah, there's a river you have to cross using the buggy, so you can't get there without going to Cosmo Canyon. That's why the game essentially forces your buggy to break down if you try to drive past it.

Nibelheim is also entirely optional, by the way! You can just run straight through it to Mt. Nibel if you like!

It's not a summon Materia.

It's a Destruct Materia!

Which is actually useful against Safer Sephiroth because you can use it to destroy the Wall he puts up at the start of the fight.

To think, he brought about his own undoing!

You can get a really good armor from him, but the only drawback is that it has no Materia slots. You can get a good accessory from Reno later on, too. Elena has something good to steal from her when you finally get to fight her, too.

No slots but the best armor in the game.

Not sure what you're talking about; Rude doesn't have a Mystile!

Ziedrich is still pretty good, though I tend not to use it anyway due to the lack of slots. I do tend to use the Nail Bat, etc., until Icicle village though. Improved offence to me just feels more important. It probably doesn't hurt that right after you get the 0-slot weapons you face an unusually strong boss with extremely high MDef and low Def for you to use them on!

I thought the Shinra mansion was forced, too, but I guess we'll see. I did skip Gongaga on my first playthough; just missed it. No Titan's not that big a deal, the early FF7 summons aren't that powerful until suddenly Odin out of nowhere kicks ass (even its non-instant death attack is something like double any previous summon's damage). I guess Odin is quite missable and you're potentially waiting until Bahamut otherwise, though.

So as we get to Cosmo Canyon, the buggy starts malfunctioning and breaks down, so we have to stop off and try to get some help to fix it, I guess. As soon as we approach the entrance, Red XIII runs in all excited and announces his return to the man at the entrance. He also asks him to let us in because we helped him out, so we're good. He's definitely become more excitable now. The party will comment on how he's all energetic like a little kid all of a sudden. When you talk to him inside, he will mention how Cosmo Canyon is his hometown, and it is his job to protect this place because he is the last of his race. He says his mother died protecting it, but his cowardly father ran away from it.

Then Bugenhagen shows up to greet Red XIII. I don't care what Before Crisis says. Bugenhagen is a man with no legs who can float! It's not a stupid ball he floats around on, darn it! Anyway, when you talk to Bugenhagen, he will thank you for watching out for Red XIII since he's still not grown yet. Red XIII will butt in and say he's 48 years old, but because of the incredible longevity of their tribe, he is equivalent to a teenager in terms of a human lifespan. Bugenhagen isn't surprised we thought he was an adult because he is very thoughtful and deep, but he is still not old enough to stand on his own, even though he wants to.

Red XIII informs Bugenhagen that Cloud and company are on a journey to save the Planet, and he suggests showing them his apparatus. Bugenhagen seems to find the idea of going on a journey to save the Planet laughable, but he says it can't hurt. Regardless, when the Planet dies, they will all realize they know absolutely nothing. Cloud is perplexed by the idea of the Planet dying, and Bugenhagen explains that it's not far off. They all listen intently, and you can hear a couple of scream-like sounds, which Bugenhagen says come from this Planet. I guess the observatory allows them to be able to hear the sound the Planet makes. I always thought the idea of the Planet sorta being a living being was kinda weird, but whatever.

We have to run off and recruit a couple of people to see the apparatus. This is another one of those cool touches I like in games like this. You don't just pick out of a menu. The party will be scattered around Cosmo Canyon doing various things and talking to different people, and so you have to go find them and invite them. I dunno why, but just the idea of them being off and doing their own thing makes them seem more like real people. Yuffie will, of course, be hanging around the Materia shop. Cait Sith will be hanging around the guy cooking dinner. Barret will be hanging around one of the elders. Tifa and Aerith will be sitting together at the Inn talking. Red XIII will be laying down to relax, and says he doesn't need to see it again, so you can't bring him along. I decide to bring along Barret and Yuffie for a nice change of pace.

I've always thought all the visual effects and stuff in the observatory were really cool. It's just a neat presentation. I love astronomy, so seeing stuff like this was fun for me. Bugenhagen explains about the Lifestream, which is a composite flow of the energy of spirits through the Planet. It is because of this spirit energy that life can exist, and without it, the Planet would die. However, Mako Reactors are sucking spirit energy out of the Planet and preventing it from accomplishing its real purpose, which is killing the Planet. The Lifestream is another one of those interesting concepts that I wish FFVII had done a better job explaining. FFVII is pretty bad about leaving a lot of major things unexplained. While we're on the subject, I wish they dealt with the matter of Red XIII and his species a little more. We can assume that there is at least another female out there like Red XIII, but where is she and what exactly is their species?

Anyway, after all of that, you can talk to the elders around Cosmo Canyon, and they'll explain some stuff about spirit energy, the Planet, etc. It's pretty neat stuff. Then all your party will be gathered around the Cosmo Candle, a big bonfire thing. One of the NPCs says something about it only ever going out once when something really horrible happened, presumably the attack of the Gi. This is another one of those really cool moments where you can talk to your party members individually and get some cool dialogue. Barret will talk about AVALANCHE and how Cosmo Canyon was where it was started (I haven't played Before Crisis, but I've read some stuff about it, and AVALANCHE seems to have been more of a renegade eco-terrorist group than anything else, much more extreme than Barret was). He says about how he originally joined AVALANCHE for revenge against the Shinra, but was that really right and will Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie be able to forgive him? Then he decides that he wants to do it to save the Planet, and everyone else can make up their minds about what kind of group AVALANCHE is for themselves, he doesn't care. Just a cool Barret moment here as usual.

Yuffie and Cait Sith won't have much to say. Yuffie will talk about how this place is boring and she wants to go someplace that has Materia. Cait Sith will say something about Cosmo Canyon bringing back memories, but he won't elaborate. If you talk to Aerith, she'll say she spent some time speaking with the Elders, and she realized that as an Ancient, she really is alone. Then Cloud will say, "But I'm...We're here for you, right?" He quickly corrects himself there, possibly to hide how he feels about her (LOL Vlado for saying Cloud never says or does anything that implies he ever had romantic feelings for Aerith, get outta here). Aerith says it's not that simple, and then she goes quiet.

If you talk to Tifa, she'll talk about how bonfires are funny and make you remember all sorts of things. She says she feels like Cloud is going really far away, and she asks him if he really, really is Cloud. Hmmm...Why would she ask that, I wonder...?! If you talk to Red XIII, he will once again talk about how much he despises his father, but this time Bugenhagen will butt in and say he has something he needs to show him. This could be dangerous, so he asks Cloud to bring another person with him.

And now for one of my least favorite dungeons in the game!

Aw yeah Climhazzard gained

Edit: And yeah, my characters are definitely underleveled. I can tell because their EXP gauges fill up more slowly after battle.

That reminds me of the first time I played FFVII. I used to run away from like every random encounter. I remember when I beat Jenova-LIFE at the end of disc 1, I gained like 3-4 levels because I was so underleveled. It was great.

Nice answers. I echo your sentiment through and through apart from finding Aerith a bit more attractive than Tifa (I know, I'm alone) and considering "Still More Fighting" and "Aerith's Theme" the best tracks at that point.

You're not alone.

LeonhartFour posted...
And Square is doing their best to retroactively make Aerith more attractive than Tifa! At some point in time, Aerith's chest became bigger than Tifa's, and I'm not sure how that happened!

Stuff like this is why I love character-driven games. I enjoy the good stories, the character development, the plot twists, and stuff like that, but character interaction is where it's at. It's why I love games like FFVIII and FFXIII (and Tales of Symphonia, Jeff!), and it's probably why I'm not so big on some of the older games because they're often lacking in this department.

Right on. I feel the same way.

LeonhartFour posted...
I didn’t remember ever picking Barret and Red XIII before to see if anything happens, so I decided to go with it to see. Once you get off the menu, Tifa and Aerith sort of look at each other for a second before going:

Aerith: “Unexpected…”
Tifa: “…Combination.”

Then Tifa tells Cloud to have fun with just the guys and they leave. Owned.

Aw, man, this is awesome.

How do you pronounce "Nibelheim" anyway?

I've heard people say "Nee-bil-heim," but I always called it "Nih-bil-heim" myself.

Same with Midgar. They pronounce it "Mid-gar" in AC, but I liked running the syllables together and make it sound more like "Mid-ger" because Mid-gar sounds too stilted.

"Nee-bil-heim," because that was the first way I heard it pronounced. I think it was in the aforementioned Tales of Symphonia, or possibly its not-quite-as-good-but-still-pretty-good sequel.

or you can agree with her, which will prompt Cloud to say, “You look like a bear wearing a marshmallow.” That quote is amazing.

Indeed.

Then she’ll ask Cloud, “What’s on your mind? It looks like your cool outer exterior is cracking.” Apparently, she’s well aware that as soon as they started talking about swimming, Cloud immediately began fantasizing about them wearing bikinis. Smart girl. I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen this scene before because Tifa is usually always in my party, so Aerith usually asks me what kind of complexion I like on girls, fair skin or a healthy tan (Fair skin, by the way).

I'm more in favor of a tan in general...but then again, it's the fair-skinned girls who get freckles, so I guess that's good too!

Yeah, I probably wouldn't have liked her much at first if I'd played FFVII when it first came out, but that trickster archetype character has grown on me...and also I was exposed to all current incarnations of the character together. In my opinion, Yuffie grows up to be the hottest FFVII chick of them all. (Dirge of Cerberus/Kingdom Hearts, although the official data swears that KH Yuffie is the same age as FFVII Yuffie. I don't believe it.)

I don't think so. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Tseng a rookie Turk in Before Crisis, which is set only a few years before FFVII? Tseng's age isn't given, but Aerith's listed as being 17 during that game. Yeah, he's probably quite a bit older than her, but I doubt he's even close to twice her age.

Well, in the flashback with Elmyra, there's a part where Tseng comes to get Aerith, and she's still a little girl and he's in the Turks. I mean, maybe they've retconned his age, but I don't know why they would.

Anyway, Cave of the Gi finished. Dungeons where enemies counterattack a lot and attack with mostly status anomalies are the worst, bah. Plus, you have to loop around through various parts of the dungeon in order to get all the items, which include an Added Effect Materia, which allows you to link up status effecting Materia to either your offense or your defense. Does anybody actually use Added Effect or Elemental Materia though? Having it on your weapon, especially at low levels, is only moderately useful, and there are items that can handle the defensive side much better. I suppose if you mastered the Materia, it would become more useful, but that means you have to have it equipped for a long time, so oh well!

Also, oil slicks and spider webs augh. At least the boss is easy because you can just X-Potion/Phoenix Down the punk. I don't think I've ever bothered beating this boss "legitimately," but who cares. After the fight, you can pick up a Gravity Materia off of the ground, and Bugenhagen will show you what he brought Red XIII in here to see, which is his father Seto, who is now turned to stone due to the Gi's poisonous arrows. Bugenhagen explains that Seto came through this cave alone and kept the Gi from taking even a single step into Cosmo Canyon. That's pretty hardcore, dude. Red XIII's parents made Bugenhagen swear to seal off the cave and tell nobody about it, but after Red XIII's misunderstanding about what his father had done, he felt he needed to know, because...

Bugenhagen wants Red XIII to continue journeying with Cloud. He says he frankly doesn't believe the Planet can be saved. Even if they destroy all the reactors and stop Sephiroth, it's just postponing the inevitable, but if there WAS something they could do, shouldn't they at least try? Doesn't the Planet deserve that much? I think it's kind of neat how Cloud and company sort of turned Bugenhagen's skepticism around into a faint optimism. Red XIII is reluctant at first, but he promises he will go out and see to the Planet's situation, and he'll come back to tell Bugenhagen about it. He declares that he is Nanaki, the son of the warrior Seto, and he vows to return as someone worthy of that name. Upon that, tears begin to fall from above them, and they realize that it's Seto weeping over what his son has just said. Pretty crazy that he's somehow still alive in that condition after such a long time, but regardless, it's a very touching scene when Seto's tears begin to fall. I really like this scene.

Afterward, Cloud and company get ready to leave without Red XIII, or so they think. As they make for the exit, Red XIII comes running and says he's going with them. Bugenhagen asks Cloud to take care of him for a while longer, and he obliges. Off we go to Nibelheim! Let's see if we can just run straight through or if we have to go into the Mansion.

Interesting when you enter the town, Cait Sith will ask Cloud if he made up the story just to get their support. Interesting question coming from a Shinra spy, although I wonder if Reeve knows the truth about Nibelheim or not. Probably not though. Seems like a "need-to-know basis" kind of deal.

Nibelheim is an interesting place. If you try to talk to the townspeople, you can talk about how the town was supposed to have been burned down five years ago, but they will, of course, firmly deny it and pretend to be offended by the accusation. Of particular interest are these weird guys in black robes all over town and tattoos numbering up to 12. If you try to talk to them, all they'll talk about is Sephiroth and Reunion, using lots of ellipses. One of them will even tell you that he's inside the mansion. Some of them have some items if you talk to them, including a Platinum Fist for Tifa! It took me a while to realize this, but the Sephiroth Clones are actually the former residents of Nibelheim. I'm not sure if the game ever really confirms this in the Ultimania, but the in-game evidence supports it, and it makes logical sense that Hojo would use the dead or nearly dead bodies of the Nibelheim residents for his cloning experiments. But if you go into one house, you'll find two small Sephiroth Clones about the size of two small kids. One will say something, and the other will repeat it. If you try to talk to the other one, he won't say anything at all. When you visit Nibelheim in the Kalm flashback, there were two children (in the same house no less) who would do the same thing. Kinda sad when you think about it. I wonder if one of these Clones is Tifa's father...

If you go into Tifa's house, you can play the piano. If you play the tune Cloud practiced in Kalm, he'll recognize it. If you play it twice, you'll find Tifa's "life savings of 1 Gil!" Whoo-hoo! Probably the most interesting thing is that there's a letter you can read on Tifa's desk addressed to Professor Hojo. The letter will say that no Clones have left Nibelheim this quarter, and all they ever talk about is Sephiroth and Reunion. He will also mention that 8 people visited Nibelheim this quarter, but none of them suspected the truth about the place. He says that the acting of the Shinra employees has improved, so he's not too worried about getting found out. Hmmm...

Anyway, we'll do the Shinra Mansion (despite it being filled with annoying enemies, especially those bats. Why are bats always some of the most annoying random enemies in video games?) in a little bit, but I have a few things to take care of first. We'll be back soon!

May as well go ahead and grab Vincent here, if you can beat the safe monster at this level

Oh yeah, definitely gonna get Vincent here.

Lost Number is the only point in the game where Seal Evil is useful.

Okay, we're good. Back to work!

Determining if I should actually take the time to find all the numbers to safe combo legitimately or if I should just cheat and look up the combo because I don't want to deal with the randoms. We'll see.

Note to Square: Please don't create random enemies with ridiculously long animations, especially for something as utterly pointless as spending 10 seconds to let me know "Yang's happy."

My word.

Okay, I decided to play fair and find all the numbers to the safe combo myself. I remembered where they all were, and I kinda sorta actually remembered what the numbers were, which was weird. Lost Number was pretty easy, actually, especially using Big Guard. Man, that spell is so good. Anyway, you have two ways you can go with Lost Number. You can pound him with physical attacks until he changes color and transforms into a guy who uses all physical attacks and can only be significantly harmed by magic. Or you can pound him with magic attacks until he changes color and transforms into a guy who uses all magic attacks and can only be significantly harmed by physical attacks. I usually choose the latter because it seems easier. What do you choose? I didn't even get to use Seal Evil before I killed him!

After you win, you can get the basement key, the Odin Materia, and Cosmo Memory, Red XIII's Level 4 Limit Break. Seems kinda weird that you can get it this early, but hey, for you power levelers out there, this is great for you! Well, sorta, since Red's Level 4 isn't that great. Anyway, there are some good items around here, including weapons for Barret (Enemy Launcher is a great name for a weapon, by the way), Yuffie, and Cait Sith.

If you head downstairs, you can meet Vincent. He'll talk cryptically about being woken from a nightmare and urges you to leave because this is the beginning of your nightmare. Cloud agrees and mentions Sephiroth, which sets Vincent off. They are both surprised that the other knows who he is, and so Vincent tells Cloud to explain himself first. Afterward, Vincent refuses to give his side of the story, saying something about this adding another sin to his record and so he'll be having more nightmares now.

Vincent tries to go back to sleep, but we ain't havin' none of that! Cloud asks him to at least tell them his name, and he obliges, adding that he is a former Turks (Hey, that's how the game puts it, not me! There is no singular form of "Turks," apparently!). Cloud says that he's a former SOLDIER himself, and Vincent asks him if he knows Lucrecia (According to Dirge of Cerberus, her name is pronounced Loo-kret-chee-uh, which I think sounds ugly. I used to call her Loo-cree-shuh before then, which I think sounds better, but hey, I'm not Square! I don't get to determine how it's pronounced!). He says that she's Sephiroth's mother. Cloud is surprised at that statement, thinking Jenova was supposed to be Sephiroth's mother. Vincent says that's not entirely incorrect, but it's just a theory. Lucrecia was the one who actually gave birth to him. Upon that, he goes back to sleep.

If you go inside the library, Sephiroth is waiting for you. He asks Cloud if he's going to participate in the Reunion, and he replies that he doesn't even know what that is. He explains that Jenova will be there and will become a calamity from the skies. Cloud gets confused and wonders if this means Jenova wasn't really an Ancient. Sephiroth is apparently displeased with his response and says he doesn't think Cloud has the right to participate (Looks like everybody was wrong about Cloud!), but regardless, he invites him to follow him past Mt. Nibel if he wants to find out more. Then he throws the Destruct Materia at Cloud (And either he throws very hard or the Materia is very hard, because it drops him to one knee), and he flies away.

In the back room, you can find some reports about two missing research specimens, a former SOLDIER who showed no reaction to Jenova cells, and a regular, who did show a reaction. Neither one was given a name. The report says that the first one was killed outside of Midgar, and that the second one escaped during that time (Pffffft, they just let him go because they thought he was useless). Regardless, they didn't think it was worth it to try to find him anymore because of his diminished consciousness. Everyone's wrong about Cloud indeed!

Her outfit in Dirge of Cerberus is hideous by the way.

Whoo, Mt. Nibel complete! That wasn't so bad! There are lots of goodies to be found here, including weapons for Cloud, Tifa, Red XIII, and Vincent! When you get to the area where the boss is, make sure you go down and flip the ladder down before jumping into the pipes. Otherwise, you won't be able to get back up to get all the items, and there are some nice ones! The boss isn't too hard, and he teaches the Enemy Skill Trine, one of the best skills for the early part of the game. Just a warning: If you use Vincent for this fight, don't let him use his Level 1 Limit Break because he has a fire-based attack, and fire heals the boss. Shame that you can't control Vincent when he transforms, but them's the breaks.

After you beat the boss, you can grab the Counter Materia, which goes immediately on Cloud. Also, you can take the alternate path to the side instead of leaving to get some extra items along the path that you followed to the reactor in the Kalm flashback. You can even find an Elemental Materia at the Mako Fountain! Anyway, Rocket Town time!

You know, I think Rocket Town is the most advanced town in Final Fantasy VII. Heck, probably in most cities in most games.

It's one of the only places I know in a JRPG with a toilet in every house.

Always pummel him with magic attacks then one or two-shot him with limit breaks when he transforms.
