Let's be clear about the Qwikster announcement. They moved forward with moving physical discs to a separate company because of the overwhelming number of subscribers who have moved to streaming only.

A year ago, Netflix was a great deal. For 8.99, you get one movie at a time along with a streaming service that has mostly old movies and tv shows. As a bonus it's awesome. You'd have to be a jerk to complain about it.

But a couple months back, they say they're splitting the services. 8 bucks each for 1 dvd and streaming. Suddenly, nothing seems like that great of a deal. 8 a month for just a dvd means we've lost all the extras, and all that value has disappeared. I switched to streaming only, like most people.

This isn't an indication that physical media is done. This isn't a critique of the postal service. This is us saying that after we've grown accustomed to the value you once provided, backing out on it feels like a huge downgrade, and given the choice of one or the other, most will go with streaming for the simple fact that we can get a hell of a lot more.

I was one of the people on Twitter after they doubled the price saying #boycottnetflix. The point was for them to lower the price. Instead they just took a major hit in losing subscribers and now they feel like shipping out dvds is a part of the past, terrified of becoming the next AOL.

Streaming is the way of the future. Its a pretty basic fact that they caught on to.

Netflix had a pretty big hand in all but completely killing off store-based rental chains. They dont want the same to happen to them.

If they're set to associate the Netflix name exclusively with streaming, then it stands to reason that they should expand their streaming lineup, right? I mean, it's decent now, but it can be much better.

I'm worried about that, Yoblazer. I hear that Netflix and Stars just ended their partnership. A big chunk of the movies on Netflix Streaming were supplied by Stars.

Yeah the Netflix streaming library right now is at the point where, if you just want something to watch, you could watch nonstop and never run out of stuff you liked. But if you ever are in the mood to watch one specific thing, it disappoints a lot.

That's how they want to spin it, but the obvious reality is that they lost a lot of subscribers because of their decision to split the services, and now they gotta play damage control.

I dunno, I imagine they are trying to make adjustments to follow the shift in the market, they should be applauded for being one of the few companies doing this. It's now just "a good deal" instead of "a sick deal", so what. I imagine most whiners just think Netflix is bumbling around and being arrogant and greedy, and that's kind of sad.

I think renaming the DVD service will help people accept them as two separate services with separate fees for each, but losing the Netflix name will probably hurt the disc service which was already fading in popularity. But maybe that's what they want? The disc service has way more overhead, what with mailing the discs out, processing the returns, maintaining an inventory, etc. Maybe they WANT it to go away and this rebranding is a way to make it die on its own, rather than killing it outright which would be bad PR?

You cannot rattle me. At all.

It really isn't about trying to "get under your skin" so much as it is laughing at a terrible post like we would at any other terrible post I'm pretty sure.

1.) Quit job at USPS
2.) ????
3.) Profit

That's pretty much it.

But the reason I'm not leaving ASAP is that I'm building up enough of a savings so that I don't NEED to have a job for at least 4 months. I plan to just sit around and casually look for stuff that interests me over the holidays with absolutely no pressure, and then in 2012 start buckling down and seriously weighing my options.

That's DIRECT MARKETING to you, buddy.

Show some respect.

Edit: I don't mean show respect to ME though. When I worked in the direct marketing business, I was at a company whose main service was converting postal mailing lists to email lists, so marketers could stop using the postal service. So actually I was actively working to take that segment of mail away from you.

How do you guys get those lists anyway? Do we sell them to you or something, or are they a matter of public record somewhere, or what?

I've always wondered why some "direct marketing" goes to each and every house and some doesn't.

I think USPS gives those out, at least in a way. We got updated address-validation data & software every month, but that came from another software company. I believe they used data released by USPS to build their software. The way it worked, at least at a basic level as far as I understand, was that it had every street in the country, and a format and range of valid house numbers for those streets. Like if you were looking at Park Ave in New York, it might have the addresses valid from 10 through 950 (or whatever it is, I just made those numbers up). So if you checked if 379 Park Ave was a valid address, it would tell you it was because it was within the accepted range. There might be some streets where a number gets skipped, like there's a #13 next to a #17 with no #15 in between, which would turn up as valid even though there was no physical building, but my guess is that most companies find it cheaper to just mail those out anyway rather than trying to track them down. Maybe they keep track of their own list of ones to skip if they get undeliverable mail returned to them? Or maybe they just keep sending it out.

Then there's another service, I think it was called DPV (Delivery Point Verification) which I think actually had a list of every deliverable address in the country. It used to be extra but around two years ago it became mandatory for all presorted bulk rate mail. This one could tell you if an address really existed besides just whether it was in the valid range. I'm not sure if it dealt with apartment numbers or not, but I think it may have.

Armed with this data, it would be pretty trivial to generate a list of all addresses even if you couldn't just get it straight out of the software's data files which you probably could.

It's an absolute fact that people who get way too into television and social media and technology and etc are dumber than those who don't. Arguing otherwise is akin to saying 2 + 2 = 17.

While an interesting point, it has nothing to do what you initially said or what he said
