It's really not at all the same. Survivor Series, the Rumble, and KOTR all include one gimmick match in them, and usually NOT the main events.

wait what

the rumble is always the main event (except for when they wanted taker to blow up the ring) and KOTR and SS always have multiple matches using the gimmick (kotr pretty much has to by design, they've gotten away from having multiple SS matches though)

The rumble is the "main event" in the sense that it happens last, yes. But my point is, having the rumble on the card doesn't take away any flexibility from what you can do with the other matches. Same thing with SvS and KOTR.

Having the gimmicks all on a preset schedule means not only do you have to use them when that month comes up, but you essentially can't use them at any other time, even if they'd be really appropriate for the given storyline.

MITB is a separate thing entirely. I just think that's a tired gimmick that should be retired completely.

But my point remains. You can say that at MITB we can have any kind of match in the main event, but we can't, because the gimmick matches are already reserved for gimmick-specific PPVs at later times. You can't have Hell in a Cell at MITB, no matter how much sense it might make, because the official Hell in a Cell PPV is coming up in a few months!

if you wanna get technical, it does

you gotta have star power in the rumble itself (which is half the reason guys get "try out" world title shots at the ppv generally) and you also have to use the guy you intend to have challenge at WM obviously

think of tonight's PPV

if they went with cena/punk/del rio and orton/henry as the title matches at the rumble, would they really have enough credible guys left to have an intriguing and compelling rumble? christian? sheamus? cody? wade? are any of those guys even there?

Well really the only "new" gimmick PPVs that still exist in that sense are Elimination Chamber, Hell in a Cell, and TLC.

And at least with TLC there's a little flexibility.

And with Elimination Chamber this year they found a way to take one of the World Titles out of the Chamber.

So really Hell in a Cell stands alone as the only really bad one.

del rio not only came up with a successful heel plan, but he even taunted an opponent after knocking the third man out and proceeded to STILL win that match, without getting hit by the finisher of the 3rd man.

i'm not sure when a heel did that one and got away with it.

what did del rio do? lock cena out of the cage?

i guess that makes sense then, but i still don't see why it was necessary to have del rio and cena trade title reigns

they should have just moved everything back a month

have the 5-star cena vs. punk match at summerslam (makes a lot more sense than MITB)

have cena beat punk at night of champions (once again, the champion vs. champion gimmick works a lot better at NoC than summerslam)

then maybe have del rio use his MITB to insert himself into the HiaC match (since he had this plan all along) and screw cena

then you have the first cena/del rio 1on1 at vengeance or whatever is next

When did Vince Russo get the book back at WWE?

Seriously pretty much everything post- MiTB has been so overbooked for so long, Im just getting sick of it. Not to say i want things to go back to being normal/boring but too much nonsense in a row and you lose the verisimilitude that made the new WWE direction work.

....what was overbooked about today's show exactly? christian/sheamus was straight. sin cara/sin cara, while dumb and a bad match, is something that.... i don't think any of us even know where they're going with it. partially because i'm not sure they do. that said, it was straight as well. henry/orton was a straight match with a surprisingly clean finish. beth/kelly was a diva match which pretty much goes by the rules of 'just kill kelly and i am happy.' natty taunting is bonus points.

what exactly was overbooked tonight. the booking was pretty spot on if anything - to those who needed to win tonight, they got it. there was no nonsense in any of the matches except for the last, and its nonsense was del rio being a goddamn genius and coming up with a strategy midway during hell in a cell. everything made sense and was logical tonight, and everything was straightforward. or what, is this about awesome truth? which is a storyline of its own and didn't affect ANY match at all, keeping itself separate from what actively went on? and is a firing angle that doens't suck for once?

like jeez, they did everything right on tonight's ppv. it's not the greatest you'll ever see, but things seem to be moving again AND they made del rio credible for the belt.

"better than NoC" and "good" aren't the same thing.

I dunno I kinda like to see my pay per views end on a clean note.

And I mean Del Rio going over Punk, sorta, after three lead pipe macks =/= going over.

And Del Rios win and the title in general got completely lost in the shuffle and looked /irrelevant/ for the first time since Punk/Cena started. So not only did he go over in a weak way, but we also just completely forgot about his win again meaning his second title reign is probably going to mean as much or even less than his first, begging the question "whats the point?" Which is Russo all the way.

I see all of you who complain about Triple H, yet have no problem with the show ending with pretty much Trips going over Miz/Truth and having to be dragged off by Sergeant Slaughter. Yes a night headlined by your two biggest faces and one of your top heels and an invasion by two more of them ended with Trips going over.

It was a mess. A Mess that made a lot more sense than NoC, but a mess nonetheless.

...I don't see how pipe smacks in a no DQ match somehow make a win weak. He outsmarted Cena to let him get to that point in the first place. How often does a heel actually pull something like that and have it WORK?

And I don't see how Trips went over, either. Yeah, he attacked Miz/Truth... After they already accomplished what they wanted AND allowed themselves to be arrested. It's not like Trips beat them up and they got dragged off. They LET themselves be dragged off and THEN he attacked. I'd bet this is leading to an assault charge with David Otunga: Ace Attorney, to screw Trips over.

Hey I think the night went great til the ME finish and the total chaos that followed.

I mean if the evening ends with Del Rio standing tall, Ill question why he lost the title at all in the first place but otherwise accept it and even cheer a great night of wrestling.

It ending with Awesome Truth plunging the entire situation in chaos and burying your otherwise solid main event and overshadowing your new champ who desperately needs to get over, especially considering how weakass his first reign was. THAT is what I took issue with and viewed as overbooked and Russo-like. Now hes champ again, buried by something more interesting going on again. And once again, odds are he'll still only get to play second fiddle to a Triple H storyline. And suddenly the title looks irrelevent, which was something they had gotten away from post-Miz.
