I've thought high production value games were underpriced for a few years. Adjusted for inflation, prices are half what they were back in the days of the SNES/N64 when games like CT and SM64 could run to $90.....in 1996 dollars.

Plus it's somewhat of a moot point since I wait for them to go down in price with precious few exceptions.

adjusted for inflation, my wages are lower than they were too

it makes no sense to price items beyond people's ability to afford them.

I would probably not buy a single game at that price.

If you've purchased two $60 games, you already have spent $120 on entertainment. Am I the only one around here capable of basic math?

I think you're misunderstanding the concept of how people decide how much an item's worth.

We don't just group everything together under "entertainment."

If I spent 1000 dollars on all the tens of games I own, and now you'll tell me I can spend 1000 dollars and just get one game, I would just say **** that.
1000 dollars isn't worth one game, and neither is 120 dollars.

I'm not really surprised at all the "less" answers, but I don't really believe it. I think people are bluffing, and once the reality of $120 and up games sets in, people would buy at that price. More than half what they buy now at $60 anyway.

And by the way, in this scenario, games would drop to $40 instead of $20 once they become cheap.

Personally, it probably wouldn't impact how many games I buy, because I don't buy games nowadays anyways, except for the very occasional game from 2002 and earlier. And I'd pay $200, $300, $400, I dunno how much my limit is, for Chrono 3 (so you may as well try to find out, Square!), if it ever comes out.

I don't think I've ever even bought a game at $60, at least not a regular edition. No reason to when games drop in price so quickly.

At $120 I think it would just change from "no thanks" to "ahahahahahaha nooooooo".

Shouldn't basic math tell you that two $60 games is twice as much entertainment for your dollar as one $120 game?

Apparently Smuffin doesn't understand elasticity of demand.

I never considered video games to be so inelastic.

Also, I'm making some assumptions here. The increase in price to $120 would HAVE to be justified in some way. Either the dollar falls in value (in which case you're paying the same amount in real dollars), or the quality of video games doubles, or the demand for video games somehow rises in which case the price increase seems justified by market forces.

I suppose that if tomorrow, the exact same video games we have now doubled in price and no other conditions changed, then yeah, sales would plummet, at least in the short term. But that's a ridiculous assumption and a completely unrealistic scenario and I guess I just assumed red sox wouldn't bother asking such a pointless question.

What I think is amusing about all this is that video games did effectively cost 120 bucks back in the early 90's, as they cost 60 each back then and inflation has essentially doubled prices.

It is justified though- $120 now would be the same price as video games had in the mid-1990s after adjusting for inflation. Video game prices have fallen in real dollars since then, and prices are set so rigidly now that I think companies haven't really tested the elasticity above $60. The relevant question for companies is: would sales fall in half? If they would fall by less than that, then they would make more money charging $120.
